The character development of these two is fricking insane. I found CH1 really fricking boring and unimpressive, then CH2 blew me away. You could make a movie out of this story, I'm an insufferable homosexual when it comes to criticizing storytelling and this game proved me wrong.
I feel whoever wrote this was very conservative/cautious during Ch1 (the demo or whatever), and when he saw the positive reception he went full throttle and completely unhinged. The whole disposing of the parents was specially fricked, I can imagine the fricker dev's brains making an entire plan on how the frick would he dispose of an entire body and leave no trace. The way I see it, it was an amazing shot at a psychological horror story. The characters' personalities are hideous as frick, yet they remain likeable all the way to the end of the 2nd chapter.
Very rare that a game makes me feel this way but I had to take multiple breaks just to compose myself. I felt like scum by the end of this chapter. Literally was about to cry.
Yeah the more the story progressed, the more I realized that Andrew was seriously fricked in the head.

Pretty much what happened. What became chapter 1 was originally just a one-off game jam submission, but one that had a certain "spark" about it that caught a lot of people's attention. The creator noticed what people liked and gave them more of it.

Andrew clearly knows its really fricking wrong, Ashley is clearly portrayed as being mentally insane, which explains why she doesnt give a shit about taboo or anything, the was she even goes something like "we just fricking killed our parents and disposed their bodies, yet you draw the line at getting laid with your sister" just hit the nail in the head with her character, her logic is twisted but she is very smart. Even the whole ending, with her thinking the whole sex vision was a way to keep manipulating him - and the dream being just her absolutely obsessed was spot on. It doesnt really fetishize the incest, and it outrights tells you is very fricking wrong when you try to go to the door, yet it still gives the player the freedom to do it anyways, the same way any regular game would let you shoot someone in the fricking face if thats your decision. Again, this was a really enjoyable experience, and the narrative of how fricked the siblings situation is (as well as their relationship) always felt very believable
I think there's at least four possible base endings for episode two, plus a bunch of smaller variations based on if you triggered some optional flags.

The segment with all the plushies could be Ashley figuring out that she should keep the green one around and the part after that just alters the paintings like we've seen.
Burial + Incest might also be different depending on whether you answered "Never!" or "never say never". the latter causes the story to develop according to the friendship route but with the incest prophecy instead of the other vision

i believe it is. It is the only soul ashley doesn't want to bottle up and she says something along the lines of "let's leave before it sees us" probably in reference to the demon (which ends up taking an interest in andrew in the burial route). It also makes sense that andrew's soul would be a hatched tar one after all the shit he did with ashley
As for the 5 souls, i first thought they were the 4 already sacrificed to the demon + Julia but the souls are all white so mom's obviously not there. And as for why is she bottling them, i don't think it is going to be a trade with the demon, the "let's leave before it sees us" line clearly implies she is pulling off a sneaky one

You see it everywhere in games: for some reason irrational violence and theft is absolutely and completely allowed and even encouraged, yet some topics (child murder, incest, even rape) are where devs "draw the line"? The game feels like a 4th wall critique to the hypocrisy of storytelling in media and people's morals. The way this game handles these topics is brilliant and feels very genuine, outright going against what people have been stagnated into thinking "its going too far" and dialing it up to the extreme.

It might work better in its current form as a game. The interactivity part contributes to making the characters feel likable despite being such horrible people by making the player directly complicit in their horribleness. Take away the interactivity, and it becomes a lot harder to make the audience sympathize with them.
for me part of the appeal comes from it being an edgy RPGMaker game, it feels like a throwback to last decade and is really nostalgic for me. i think that weird niche vibe would be lost if it were any other medium
Also how would it even be possible to translate the absolutely brilliant plushie placement puzzle in the "I know what I'm about" route to a non-interactive medium? That's the sort of games-only storytelling that shows just how powerful the medium really can be.

Just to end my ramblings on this, I really like how introspective it goes on these topics. You can see both siblings debate on these topics, how Ashley manages to convince Andrew killing in self defense is okay, then how he convinces him again that eating the dude to survive is also okay. If you go both routes you can see how Andrew is absolutely disgusted at the idea of eating the soup (CH2), and how Ashley's fricked up brain makes it look like its a victory of sorts, and she even feels justified because they were terrible parents. Not only that but the way. Once you reach the incest part, you realize what's she's saying is not that far-fetched, crazy or anything. They fricking killed their parents, mutilated their bodies and even fricking ate them. Andrew feeling that is wrong or "going too far" is absolutely ridiculous once you realize the incest "line" is like 50 FRICKING MILES behind where he's standing now, having murdered and cannibalized their own parents.
I like how drastic is the contrast between the game narrator as well as the mom thoughts about it, which is just regular reasoning (incest bad), versus Ashley's perspective which aligns with the player's, who has seen all the fricked up shit these two have already done - and realize sibling sex is absolutely nothing in comparison. Again, it's fantastic storytelling. Were to be in their position, would anyone REALLY worry about breaking some taboo? Of course they wouldn't.
That's it for the rambling, I just wanted to share some thoughts and see if it'd spark some discussion.
I like that it does show that before all this chaos with the quarantine, they were causing havoc and getting away with it. I don't see Andrew as a total doormat but he, just like Ashely, doesn't actually want them to be apart even when she's done something so incredibly fricked up.
I think part of their relationship is that Andy can use Ashely to soak up his guilt, sorta. Everything he's done (going along with shutting the kid in the box and thus killing her, him killing the guard, shooting the hitman) these can all be considered that he's doing them for Ashely.
The only one Andrew has done all by himself is the NEET girl in the apartment block, and yet he doesn't seem to feel anything bad about that one, if we go by his dreams.

As a simple RPGmaker ADV is extremely competent honestly if not outright fantastic. Entirely unique assets, though the stock standard rpgmaker sfx I can still hear every now and then, but the real stand out is the sheer amount of CGs that really bring to life every interaction between the two.
And as an ADV it's not entirely linear too. There are loads of missable stuff, interactions, and charming little scenes that you can completely avoid in a playthrough. If the presentation alone wasn't enough the writing for the two leads is the cherry on top. EASILY one of the best rpgmaker ADVs out there and would be a shoe-in for top 3 if Nemlei sticks the landing with chapter 3.
It sold something like 10,000 copies in 3 days on Steam right? Maybe this success will compel her to make a game with a bigger budget for the next game.

The character development of these two is fricking insane. I found CH1 really fricking boring and unimpressive, then CH2 blew me away. You could make a movie out of this story, I'm an insufferable homosexual when it comes to criticizing storytelling and this game proved me wrong.
I feel whoever wrote this was very conservative/cautious during Ch1 (the demo or whatever), and when he saw the positive reception he went full throttle and completely unhinged. The whole disposing of the parents was specially fricked, I can imagine the fricker dev's brains making an entire plan on how the frick would he dispose of an entire body and leave no trace. The way I see it, it was an amazing shot at a psychological horror story. The characters' personalities are hideous as frick, yet they remain likeable all the way to the end of the 2nd chapter.

Pretty much what happened. What became chapter 1 was originally just a one-off game jam submission, but one that had a certain "spark" about it that caught a lot of people's attention. The creator noticed what people liked and gave them more of it.

My favorite part of the game was no doubt the whole incestual undertones, which I've never seen on any game (thats isnt full on weebshit). Andrew clearly knows its really fricking wrong, Ashley is clearly portrayed as being mentally insane, which explains why she doesnt give a shit about taboo or anything, the was she even goes something like "we just fricking killed our parents and disposed their bodies, yet you draw the line at getting laid with your sister" just hit the nail in the head with her character, her logic is twisted but she is very smart. Even the whole ending, with her thinking the whole sex vision was a way to keep manipulating him - and the dream being just her absolutely obsessed was spot on. It doesnt really fetishize the incest, and it outrights tells you is very fricking wrong when you try to go to the door, yet it still gives the player the freedom to do it anyways, the same way any regular game would let you shoot someone in the fricking face if thats your decision. Again, this was a really enjoyable experience, and the narrative of how fricked the siblings situation is (as well as their relationship) always felt very believable

It goes on and on AND ON about how its wrong. The mom says it, Andrew says it, even the FRICKING GAME says it. Yet it allows it, which I found it very bold and innovative.
You see it everywhere in games: for some reason irrational violence and theft is absolutely and completely allowed and even encouraged, yet some topics (child murder, incest, even rape) are where devs "draw the line"? The game feels like a 4th wall critique to the hypocrisy of storytelling in media and people's morals. for me part of the appeal comes from it being an edgy RPGMaker game, it feels like a throwback to last decade and is really nostalgic for me. i think that weird niche vibe would be lost if it were any other medium
Also how would it even be possible to translate the absolutely brilliant plushie placement puzzle in the "I know what I'm about" route to a non-interactive medium? That's the sort of games-only storytelling that shows just how powerful the medium really can be.
You could definitely cut the incest door branching section without compromising what comes before or after that in a non-interactive medium. The segment with all the plushies could be Ashley figuring out that she should keep the green one around and the part after that just alters the paintings like we've seen.
It's thankfully not in your face about it, but the tone and setting of the game feel very 2000s. The tone of the TV advertisements and the world in general remind me a bit of Invader Zim (and I mean that in a good way, and I wasn't even a fan of Invader Zim).

I do agree with you on that, but also I feel like a bigger reason is because of just how well they're written. Like even in a different medium they could still work just because they're THAT likeable by themselves

Just to end my ramblings on this, I really like how introspective it goes on these topics. You can see both siblings debate on these topics, how Ashley manages to convince Andrew killing in self defense is okay, then how he convinces him again that eating the dude to survive is also okay. If you go both routes you can see how Andrew is absolutely disgusted at the idea of eating the soup (CH2), and how Ashley's fricked up brain makes it look like its a victory of sorts, and she even feels justified because they were terrible parents. Not only that but the way. Once you reach the incest part, you realize what's she's saying is not that far-fetched, crazy or anything. They fricking killed their parents, mutilated their bodies and even fricking ate them. Andrew feeling that is wrong or "going too far" is absolutely ridiculous once you realize the incest "line" is like 50 FRICKING MILES behind where he's standing now, having murdered and cannibalized their own parents.
I like how drastic is the contrast between the game narrator as well as the mom thoughts about it, which is just regular reasoning (incest bad), versus Ashley's perspective which aligns with the player's, who has seen all the fricked up shit these two have already done - and realize sibling sex is absolutely nothing in comparison. Again, it's fantastic storytelling. Were to be in their position, would anyone REALLY worry about breaking some taboo? Of course they wouldn't.
That's it for the rambling, I just wanted to share some thoughts and see if it'd spark some discussion.
I like that it does show that before all this chaos with the quarantine, they were causing havoc and getting away with it. I don't see Andrew as a total doormat but he, just like Ashely, doesn't actually want them to be apart even when she's done something so incredibly fricked up.
I think part of their relationship is that Andy can use Ashely to soak up his guilt, sorta. Everything he's done (going along with shutting the kid in the box and thus killing her, him killing the guard, shooting the hitman) these can all be considered that he's doing them for Ashely.
The only one Andrew has done all by himself is the NEET girl in the apartment block, and yet he doesn't seem to feel anything bad about that one, if we go by his dreams.

As a simple RPGmaker ADV is extremely competent honestly if not outright fantastic. Entirely unique assets, though the stock standard rpgmaker sfx I can still hear every now and then, but the real stand out is the sheer amount of CGs that really bring to life every interaction between the two.
And as an ADV it's not entirely linear too. There are loads of missable stuff, interactions, and charming little scenes that you can completely avoid in a playthrough. If the presentation alone wasn't enough the writing for the two leads is the cherry on top. EASILY one of the best rpgmaker ADVs out there and would be a shoe-in for top 3 if Nemlei sticks the landing with chapter 3.
