While what you're saying is true, FFXIV is also a big example of how modern Square has to force dialects and accents into everything. Can you read it? Sure. Is it an accurate or good translation? Not at all.

Eh, its a video game. Especially in the day of voice acting, you just want to hear something that sounds cool and isn't just casual bro talk like western games.

          >Especially in the day of voice acting, you just want to hear something that sounds cool and isn't just casual bro talk like western games.
All the examples in that picture do not have voice acting. That's kind of the point. Using Dragon Quest as an example, in Dragon Quest VIII, the dialects aren't that big of an issue because you're hearing them spoken. You can just ignore the text. But then in other games without voice acting, they try to produce the accents and dialects via text. And it's really bad. Final Fantasy XIV does this as well. And since the game is 90% reading dialogue...

Not in the original Japanese. They speak largely normal. The context of them being pirates comes from what they say and do, not how they say it.
          >b-but who cares about the original! I need my flavor!
If you think that, then fine. I'm just pointing out that it's not an accurate translation. It's a heavy modification added by the English localization. If you accept that you're playing a heavily modified version of a game that isn't following the original writers intention, then cool.

Final Fantasy is English first, Japanese second. Notice how the lip sync in FFXIV is done in English for CGI. Koji is lore guy as well and he's not Japanese.

              >Final Fantasy is English first, Japanese second.
I remember when people were saying this about MGS for two decades. Then Kojima came out of nowhere and knocked it down.

All joking aside, It's written in Japanese. All of them.
              >Notice how the lip sync in FFXIV is done in English for CGI.
You dubgays are going to ride this one forever. And it's not even true. If you actually read one of the thousands of articles gloating about this, you'd see how they were doing lip syncing for both the Japanese and English at the same time. But just dropped the Japanese one.
              >Koji is lore guy as well and he's not Japanese.
He's a translator. Not the original writer. Holy shit you're grasping those straws so hard, they're going to imbed into your skin.

                >muh MGS
Oh yeah dude, Keifer Sutherland and all the noise surrounding the casting of the game was totally a JP affair.
                >He's a translator. Not the original writer.

By your logic, Final Fantasy XIV is Russian. Because there's a bunch of Russian choral pieces.
                >Cope moron.
                Oh, the irony.

                >"Dalamud" is one of the most blatant name-changes between the Japanese and English versions. In the Japanese script, the moon is referred to as "ダラガブ"; most literally transliterated as "Daragabu", and more conventionally as "Dalagab". There is no way to get a "-mud" sound from "ガブ"; this represents a conscious decision to change the name. The lyrics to "Rise of the White Raven" are consistent across all language options—the lyrics state "Testate adventu Dalamud" at the end of the chorus, with no room for interpreting the final syllable as "gab".

                Now die, moron.

He's a professional well-poisoner over at SE. The ultimate proof that it's a doomed company. The best part is that NA players believe he has a much larger role than he has because he's in charge of the atrocious localization. Once travel to JP imageboards, blogs, and forums, he's basically a literally who.

Amerimuttoids will never capitulate on localizations being inferior to accurate translations. It's like trying to make them understand the difference in flavors between something prepared with high fructose corn syrup and actual sugar or fructose.

It has been common to display dialects and accents this way for some time, it's not just some random cringe done for a video game.

          Anonymous

The way they use accents in this game are not the way Mark Twain used an accent in Huck Finn. There's actual standards for written accents. And a lot of SquareEnix games are not following those. They literally just make shit up based on how they think it sounds. And it's not just limited to accents. If a major FF game has pulled some of the shit the Dragon Quest games did, people would be furious. But because it's Dragon Quest, people just think its "cute and funny."
