In fact, outside of Dragon Quest which is primarily only popular in Japan, a majority of the "stand out" JRPGs in the West usually have some pretty tragic backstory of one nature or another. You want people talking about your game and unless you're something with a reputation of Dragon Quest a story like "da bad guy woke up then plagued the world in evil and now your band of heroes has to kill them" or "an antihero thief accidentally wakes up an ancient evil and now your band of heroes has to kill them" doesn't particularly keep people invested in the button mashing gameplay.
Not saying I think this game is good btw. Just saying, if you want your cutesy purposefully cliche western indie "JRPG", they're out there. Especially on sites like itch.io
