t. guy who wants to buy a Saturn and games and wants to convince other people online to hate the Saturn in hopes that, with less demand, the prices will decrease. I'm on the same boat.
NEVREVAR. Its sad man. I used to collect, but looked at Saturn shit 10, maybe 15 years back? Prices back then weren't terrible but some of the more well known stuff was pretty expensive. I think the only console left to really collect for (because it has some of the best games ever made on it) would be the playstation 2, which incidentally had a lot of Sega stuff ported onto it.
not him but fellow (ex-)coomlectorgay.
Though the PS2 has already exploded in price too. There are some "hidden gems" left but like hell I'll post about them here.
The Saturn has some neat games for sure but the library is lacking unless youre into shmups big time
I just finished the first Clockwork Knight and thought it was pretty fun, albeit short. (which is good for me as I like short games)
It's a 2D sidescrolling action game. >what emulator
I used the standalone Yaba Sanshiro, though FMV audio was fricked a bit and I had to save state at the start of every level because the game would occasionally frick up completely.
Retroarch was giving me trouble as well.
There's a sequel too which I plan to play soon.
Mednafen is the best emulator for Sega saturn right now. Probably Nights into dreams or panzer dragoon (whole series honestly). If you don't like fighters or arcade ports you won't really get much out of the console. There are a lot of action rpg/jrpg's on the system but I don't play those because I'm not gay. DUH END.
Ah yes, the game that killed Sega.
Frick NiGHTS and its boring-ass gameplay, why Sega didn't make Sonic 4 on its engine instead is beyond me. Guess they really wanted to fail.
It's a much better game than any 3D game Sonic (or 2D Sonic for that matter) and had good sales. Everyone was hostile to 2D back then and any 3D Sonic game would've played like crap. Ridiculous to say it killed SEGA.
I like NiGHTS but yeah, acting like the decision to prioritize that over a real 3D Sonic didn't help kill Sega is just delusional. They thought they could just trash Sonic like they did Alex Kidd, didn't realize the power of a good mascot. Even Sega knew they fricked up later on, considering they had to throw together like 3 Sonic games for the system.
Unless you like fighters, shmups or can read runes, its library really is limited. I say that as someone who had it when it was out and over the years have constantly come back, digging through its library to find this so called "2D powerhouse" as i heard it called for years, and yeah no. I guess i was expecting platformers and run n guns, but outside of what i mentioned above, i only find some little niche titles here and there i like. The PS1 absolutely did fricking dominate it with the types of games i hear people claim the saturn has and i wish that wasnt the case, because i want to enjoy it like the genesis, but there is very little that NEEDS to be played on it that isnt available on other platforms of the era.
But i mean if you wanna try some shit out: Super Tempo, both Bombermen, steamgear mash and legend of oasis i enjoyed.
I enjoy:

-Galactic Attack
-Darius Gaiden
-Virtua On
-The Legend of Oasis
Other good games on the system are better played elsewhere. Silhouette Mirage has an official english version available on the PSX, and the D&D Beat 'em Ups are better emulated on Winkawaks imo. Some people reportedly like Grandia and Shining Force III, I don't really get it.
It's amazing how hardware intensive Sega Saturn emulation is even today. I have a Ryzen 7 5800x and on Beetle Saturn whenever I load an FMV I get awful audio crackling. I wish the mednafen devs optimized how FMV decoding worked.
Beetle Saturn was updated to 1.29.0 (mednafen upstream) a few weeks ago. Also my entire Saturn collection is archived in .chd format so unless mednafen implements .chd support, I don't see myself using standalone any time soon.
I should've clarified that this audio crackling only happens on Grandia's FMVs, others games decode FMVs at full speed. I can get rid of it if I set max swapchain images to 3 from 2, but I gain latency by doing that obviously. It's worth the trade-off but it's kinda frustrating that Saturn emulation still has these performance issues.
>Alpha 3 on Saturn is the best looking game of the generation
Maybe technically, but I prefer vampire Savior.
And I also prefer Alpha 2 to 3. idc about the few missing frames on the Saturn port, it's still my fav version of the game.
>they fricked up by not just using the jam 3D engine to make a full game though.
that was the plan with sonic adventure, but then bernie decided the saturn was not our future and told soj to shift development to his new console, the dreamcast.

wondering why the frick didnt they just do a sonic game

tomb raider, fighting vipers, wipeout and sonic jam
The best saturn game is Battle Garegga.
It's amazing how hardware intensive Sega Saturn emulation is even today. I have a Ryzen 7 5800x and on Beetle Saturn whenever I load an FMV I get awful audio crackling. I wish the mednafen devs optimized how FMV decoding worked.
>Beetle Saturn
Use standalone mednafen. It works much better.
Beetle Saturn was updated to 1.29.0 (mednafen upstream) a few weeks ago. Also my entire Saturn collection is archived in .chd format so unless mednafen implements .chd support, I don't see myself using standalone any time soon.

How good is Kronos as an emulator? Only problem that happened to me was a sound distortion in one of guardian heroes' stages.
Bug!
I've been replaying Saturn at native resolution and it's shocking to me how quads hold up better than the vaseline filter 64 and jiggly jaggies.
Saturn got so much shit but I recommend replaying now
Sega rally looks better than granturismo
VF 2 looks better than Tekken 3
Alpha 3 on Saturn is the best looking game of the generation
Sotn (hacked on cdromance- you're welcome ) is so damn good on Saturn

It still hurts to think about.
extreme would have been trippy. they fricked up by not just using the jam 3D engine to make a full game though.

Do most saturn games use all 6 face buttons? I only have a DS4.
That has enough buttons to bind everything. I like my Retobit usb pad though for Saturn and general emulation.
