I like both, though index has a very slow start, accel is the only thing carrying it for quite a while before it kicks into gear.
august is always high earning in FGO JP because it's anniversary where they release some sort of busted version of a fan favorite character followed by a summer event with a bunch of summer versions of more fan favorite characters. the funny thing is that despite the fact that they give out a very substantial amount of free rolls as a celebration, lately the anniversary characters are blatantly designed to bait getting them several times and the abysmal 300-roll pity (which you need to save for 8 fricking months as an f2p) only works for ONE copy and after that there are no guarantees so whales who have been playing since release spend ludicrous amounts. Not to mention that japs are absolutely fricking insane and some of them roll tens of copies for some fricking reason when you only need 6 to absolutely max out the character. in comparison, global version of FGO is a literal drop compared to the ocean of FGO JP profits

The game just isn't designed to leech you in-game, there's very little monetization and you can skip 90% of units you don't care about. They make up for it by shitting out tons of merchandise though.

If you only care about Mikoto and Kuroko just watch Railgun. I started with the Railgun manga and then read the Index LNs and if I had dropped the series after catching up on Railgun, the lasting power and popularity of the franchise would have been entirely lost on me. Personally I think that Index has FAR more highs than Railgun, and Accelerator is a main character in it and he's one of the series' main redeeming aspects.
Season 1 is more slice of life with occasional action, season 2 and 3 are more action/drama oriented. Basically a shounen anime but the protagonist is a girl.
I loved the Sisters arc in Railgun. It's a shame the first season is such trash and the second arc of season 2 isn't good either. At least season 3 was good again.

You watch index all the way through, then watch all of railgun for the side story. Or watch index to episode 16 or so, then jump ship to railgun if you only care about Biribiri.
The story is very linear and has a set timeline, but all of the sidestories happen during the same timeframe as the main events and things cross-reference each other.

Heres how everything lines up, but frankly you dont have to worry about it too hard. Things sometimes get referenced without context and are great if you know whats up, but none of them will outright spoil shit that happens in the others.
Some spoilers in pic related in the form of arc and event names, including a somewhat bigger spoiler at the end of the timeline. A few quick glances avoiding the end of time timeline helps to understand what's going on.

Index is the main series
The order is strange bc some arcs cover the same events from different perspectives. Some events might spoil things that happen in other parts, or are much better executed so it's best you experience it in one way first. Railgun's first season takes place before Index's. Railgun is (generally) considered to have the better adaptation, so it usually gets priority when it comes to spoiling things. I personally I agree especially for Railgun S.
The main thing people shuffle around is when to watch Railgun S since it's essentially a more fleshed out adaptation of what's only a few episodes of Index. You're much better off experiencing that story from that perspective first.
I'm a proponent of this order:
Index I 1-9 > Railgun > Railgun S > Index 10+ > Accelerator -> Index II 1-7 -> Endymion -> Index II 8+ -> Index III 1-6 -> Railgun T -> Index III 7+
This establishes Index as the main series, introduces you to the characters especially Touma who's the MC and absent in Railgun s1, and in a more serious environment. The thing is, index s1 is a little lower budget and stiffer compared to later seasons and Railgun. Many people recommend starting with Railgun to view that version of that arc first instead of Index's. This order has you watch Index through a logical arc ending, before starting the arc that Railgun S adapts. Once you finish Railgun S, you can finish Index S1 without worrying about spoiling Railgun S, then the rest is fairly simple, chronological stuff with the accelerator spinoff, movie where it fits, then another similar chronological/concurrent event with Railgun T and Index III ep 7-13 focusing on the same event.
I disagree on S. Watch Index first and view that arc from Touma's perspective first like intended, then go and see what lead to it happening in railgun. Part of why it works in Index is because you DONT have the full picture.

I started with the Railgun manga and then read the Index LNs and if I had dropped the series after catching up on Railgun, the lasting power and popularity of the franchise would have been entirely lost on me. Personally I think that Index has FAR more highs than Railgun, and Accelerator is a main character in it and he's one of the series' main redeeming aspects.

You watch index all the way through, then watch all of railgun for the side story. Or watch index to episode 16 or so, then jump ship to railgun if you only care about Biribiri.
The story is very linear and has a set timeline, but all of the sidestories happen during the same timeframe as the main events and things cross-reference each other.
Heres how everything lines up, but frankly you dont have to worry about it too hard. Things sometimes get referenced without context and are great if you know whats up, but none of them will outright spoil shit that happens in the others.
Some spoilers in pic related in the form of arc and event names, including a somewhat bigger spoiler at the end of the timeline. A few quick glances avoiding the end of time timeline helps to understand what's going on.

Index is the main series
The order is strange bc some arcs cover the same events from different perspectives. Some events might spoil things that happen in other parts, or are much better executed so it's best you experience it in one way first. Railgun's first season takes place before Index's. Railgun is (generally) considered to have the better adaptation, so it usually gets priority when it comes to spoiling things. I personally I agree especially for Railgun S.
The main thing people shuffle around is when to watch Railgun S since it's essentially a more fleshed out adaptation of what's only a few episodes of Index. You're much better off experiencing that story from that perspective first.
I'm a proponent of this order:

This establishes Index as the main series, introduces you to the characters especially Touma who's the MC and absent in Railgun s1, and in a more serious environment. The thing is, index s1 is a little lower budget and stiffer compared to later seasons and Railgun. Many people recommend starting with Railgun to view that version of that arc first instead of Index's. This order has you watch Index through a logical arc ending, before starting the arc that Railgun S adapts. Once you finish Railgun S, you can finish Index S1 without worrying about spoiling Railgun S, then the rest is fairly simple, chronological stuff with the accelerator spinoff, movie where it fits, then another similar chronological/concurrent event with Railgun T and Index III ep 7-13 focusing on the same event.

I disagree on S. Watch Index first and view that arc from Touma's perspective first like intended, then go and see what lead to it happening in railgun. Part of why it works in Index is because you DONT have the full picture.

I had the opposite experience. Being a 2000s game Sky felt more like an indie game trying too hard to stylize itself like a classic JRPG that it just felt beyond soulless.
They upgrade themselves to ps3 graphic. Great change, still pretending to be indie in 2023 even harder now than ever.
Cold Steel was pure SOVL because it's tone felt authentic becuase ironically enough for how much people complain about how CS feels generic and Sky unique, Sky is so incredibly generic tonally for what it tries to do while CS actually has it's own identity and feels unique.

Yes and there is no other JRPG that tries to do that. You can name 6 million JRPGs that feel like Sky because it's the most boring generic fantasy adventure ever but you can't name 1 that feels like CS and no Persona does not.
Persona is literally a good example, there are dozens of game that tried to add bonds meter, School, HAREM and samurai/sword protagonist with blank personality. You can go from Ar Tonelico, Mana Khemia, the Shining series, some of the Fire Emblem, Conceptions.

Exactly what we have done in 5 Cold Steel games. They get even more screentime by the sheer of amount of games and received even less development per game.

Cold Steel was garbage, it had a good start but overstayed its welcome. Also the characters are awful and one dimensional as frick even after 4 games.

They had proper screentime not split into dozens of other party members. The whole class 7 was awful too look at.
