The entire thing got fricked extra hard mid development so they hastily repurposed it into this single player abomination, but forgot to take off all of the MMO shit off it.
It's also super buggy and extra unfinished, every map has lots of places with poorly placed assets that clearly show how the game was extremely rushed, it's even more damning because they released two DLCs for the game but never took the time to fix anything in the main game, they actually made it worse with every patch by nerfing every the was "fun" to use to the ground.
Honestly, just stay away from it, it's one of those games that are just depressing to even boot up.

I think Growlanser has a fair bit more choices than SMT or langrisser, including but not limited to Planescape Torment style drifting alignment that changes dialogue options.

The recent Second Story R remaster is what you might consider the definitive version of the game, but it does away with the original's background assets in favor of 2H-HD, it also adds some new combat mechanics and tweaks.
PSP is the closest there is to the original, the most notable changes are the portraits and the voice acting, Welch is also a new playable character that didn't exist in the original version, she's obviously playable in the recent R version as well.
If you ask me there's no reason to play the PSX version, but I'm sure there's some guy out there who would disagree.

This is a staple of generals if you've ever been to /vg/. It's pretty much all that, all the time, and they think it's normal.
Artdink does not make real games. They make really basic joke versions of simulation games. Lunatic Dawn is a joke version of a simulation of an adventuring party. Like compare A-Train to TTD, these are clearly not doing the same thing. The only game they've made that really breaks this mold that I can think of is Carnage Heart (which is a strategy game) and even that is more like some whacky programming simulation, but its puzzle-y so it actually feels like a game.
