Most common use for the clit mouse is for 3D games where it'd be used for camera controls anyways, not a lot of games actually use the Circle Pad Pro controls and by extension the ZL, ZR, and circle nub inputs on the New 3DS
The analog slider is a pretty elegant solution to having a 3D joystick on a clamshell console, or in general having a 3D joystick on a handheld

The DS is completely obsolete which is a real shame. I wish chink handeld manufacturers would get the memo and just make a chink handheld in the DS form factor with HD touch screens.

This. For DS games it's so much better to play them on a DS screen, even if it's a regular dsi and not the XL. Tho I can't say that the dsi xl is very good at emulating GBA stuff unfortunately.

As a grown man, the 3DS XL feels better to play, but the screen looks worse. A DS Lite is probably easier to find than the pokemon 3DS, but the screen size and pixel density and your hand size should be your main concerns in choosing a DS version to buy.
I would buy 2 versions. I like both, but prefer one over the other sometimes. Pokemon one is better for travel, but XL is better at home, to be honest.

3DS has a long startup to emulate DS games. So over many sessions you'll save a lot of time
Maz Zhou (Anbrrnic dude) now has the funds for a ds hardware clone, but I don't think it'll be a clamshell.

There's some different upscaling techniques that can look a bit better depending on the game, but it won't look as good as the DSi.
though it probably looks worse since i think its a little stretched but i have never had any real issue with it looks good for me
