This is why you need to play on Normal/Classic Xp and not give a fuck what others say, and you can basically build ALMOST however you like it, anon. I have to admit I have the autistic tendency to be a completionist in games such as these so everytime I make a build it has to be able to do a bit of everything...

        >This is why you need to play on Normal/Classic Xp and not give a fuck what others say, and you can basically build ALMOST however you like it, anon.
This was true when the game came out. On the latest patches this is absolutely not true at all. The dev has just kept increasing the difficulty to the point there are only a few viable builds left.
You might not even notice you are completely fucked because the previous build checks, like the junkyard, are no longer the actual real build checks. You can get 40 hours into the game and still be completely fucked by choices you made 5 minutes after opening it.

          Anonymous

The dev spent all that time just making the game harder because he was annoyed at the "broken" builds people came up with. So he made the game so difficult that there are only a few very specific builds that are viable that align with his vision of how to play the game.
The guy replying to every single post saying all builds are viable also says he always maxes stealth and has throwing. The reason is that these are required on every single viable build unless you want to spend hours on each fight saving and loading until the rolls go your way, if you didnt gimp yourself so hard its even possible that they can.

          And those builds are exactly?

These vidya taking tabletop mechanics where you would read a book extensively and make multiple characters to play multiple different games and then pasting that system into one game where you have to make a character before getting a chance to play will never not be retarded.

        Kinda this...
Nades + traps are pretty fucking powerful all game long.
With maxed out throwing, grenadier feat and three-pointer feet MK3 plasma grenade crit can be over 900 damage, and since there aren't that many enemies with very high energy/heat resistance, well...

If you are playing on normal, I'd say depot A is a breeze through, you just need to be patient. then again, I ALWAYS max stealth, because I'm a quite staunch stealth autist.

The whole agent/rogue/tief archtype has always been my bread and butter.

Guns. I’ve learned that shotguns are…. LE BAD.
Maybe I’m just an idiot but I feel like I don’t have enough AP to do enough damage and the enemies heal a lot. Currently attempting to use an assault rifle and it’s been a little better but I can’t tell its still going to be a slog.

Unless you are specificall doing like a min-max run on dominating, and just playing on normal or even hard; don't listen to the retards saying: "You can't play X because it is.. LE BAD."

I'm assuming its your first time playing so I won't spoil shit to you, but I will give you a few tips.
            >Make sure to invest atleast a little bit into throwing so you won't just lob nades at your feet
            >Unless specifically running detection goggless/or having high perception etc. Invest a bit into traps, so you won't get randomly blown to bits by mines
            >EXPLORE. EXPLORE. EXPLORE, especially if you are prepared to fight. Sseth says in his review to do the exact opposite, and though I like him and his insight. This is bullshit. Even in Depot A there is atleast MULTIPLE ways to either clear it and/or find what you are looking for.
            >Learn how to use combat mode even for other things than fighting

            >tfw being a trappy snipey man works perfectly fine up until the final area with all the mutants and you just get completely dumpstered

Are you talking about the final area specifically or the final moment of the final area?

My psi build save got fucked somehow, cant use the elevator to the endgame. Always crashes, tried earlier saves also. yes game is legit copy from steam. Made a hammer guy, got bored havent played in months. Havent finished the game once

                Anonymous

This is salvageable, anon; but yeah... Scuffed.
Get some points to stealth, otherwise you'll be fucked. UNLESS you specifically wanna go for a "frontline soldier" type thing. As for those ten points in Crossbows and 5 points in thought control... Pure waste. As for social those points are fine. But you wanna choose usually either between intimidation OR persuation, not both. Also if you wanna spec into Intimidation, get the Yell feat.

As for Dodge/Evasion... Both are also pretty meh, I wouldn't call it waste per se; but definently not that great, especially if you run heavier armors. As I said before, get some points into throwing so you won't fuck yourself with your own nades. As for traps which you got some points for. They are also extremely useful in depot A. And since you've specced into guns, you can pick up like an supressed SMG to clear individual guys, so you don't ahve to fight a million mutants at once.

Without giving spoilers to specific/exact things/events, I can give you a few heads up about stat checks:
Biggest stat checks in the game for almost every specific check is about 130-150 for individual skills like hacking or lockpicking and 11 to 15 for base stats like agility/strength
So keep that in mind and your build ahead.

                Anonymous

Not him, but I tried a stealth build and got my shit ruined. Stealth seems pretty useless in this game. I'm in the same boat where I got too far to want to start over, but was too shitty to keep going.

                Anonymous

I mean, investing into stealth takes away from your ability invest in something else.

I've found stealth to be very useful. But to invest in stealth alone and no into combat? Oh on no no no... That's an oopsie right there. As much as I enjoy solving problems with other means than just combat, the setting of Underrail is fucking dangerous and it's made evident very, VERY fast. So obviously invest in your ability to fight in some regard.

It wasn't pure stealth, obviously. It was stealth and guns, with some lockpicking and pickpocketing.

You lack hacking. As for guns, you should be fine.
A mini-izu with enough dex should be able to shred through single targets even armored ones with armor piercing (green) rounds and non armored high constitution trargets with hollow point (red) rounds and robots with shock (blue) rounds.

                >Stealth seems pretty useless in this game.
It is extremely useful, unless you enjoy save scumming to know where enemies are. It also guarantees you a strong opening turn where you can eliminate the most dangerous enemies.
Also the best skill in the game (Snipe) scales off it so hard that you one shot Tchort.

To be fair I did pick a cookie-cutter tin can build, but literally just invest in flashbangs and caltrops and everything is ez.
You'll already detect most stealthed things since perception is necessary for guns.

Not defending it though, I still believe it to be completely conceptually fucked that the deepest intricacies of a build are all accounted for by the devs and necessary for the enemy scaling.
That's what really makes it so easy to fuck up your character, botched characters won't have access to synergies and gear that are necessary just to progress.

From what Ive always heard: ARs and heavy armor was purposefully made to be easy mode

      Anonymous

Depends. As said already. Combination of Psi and Intelligence allows you to learn most of the lore game has to offer. While a simple metal armor + guns + grenades allows you practically fight anything and everything.

The former needs more planning and thinking, but has a bigger pay off technically, while the latter is more simpler approach with arguably a lesser pay off. I'd say the sweet spot is finding THAT something in between.
Regarding lore, there are few distinct things you need to have for skill/stat checks if you want most of the lore: they are as follows:
      >12 int
      >12 will
      >130 effective hacking

I honestly just wish I could roam a tunnels like area that went on like for fucking ever. Occasionally give me a settlement of fish traders to get shit done, I’m happy. I just want to always have more cells to fuck shit up in.

I really don't see why an endless procedurallly generated mob hasn't been spearheaded yet.

      This.

So everyone talks about great build variety, but can you actually name a example of some build that is not just "weapon type+psi"? I'm looking for more whacky stuff like sinergy between different guns

Try maxed throwing with both knives and nades. There is a good variety there and should also offer a challenge. Also in my current run (a build which I linked above) falls into wacky territory with maxed out int + high technicalities (more int you have, more dmg energy weapons do).

That's a just a few possible options. There are countless more
          >Can't wipe out the Eels instead of Scrappers.
          >Can't wipe out both with the help of the Protectorate or SGS or both (by through subterfuge)
          >Can't take control of the Rig with anyone else but the pirates
          >Can't Raiding the Junkyard embassy After supporting the Free Drones and conquering SRO
          >Can't help/save Rail Crossing without ratting out the Free Drones
          >Can't Backstab either the Free Drones or the Protectorate by being a double agent
          >Same shit but with the Oligarchs
          >Can't fund anything
          >Can't do more with Oculus or play politics with their help
          >Can't have any interactions with Kharon unless you are a Mutant
          >No options regarding (becoming mutant) than being a retard strength monstrosity
          >No Sørmirbæren, Iron Heads, Lurkers or Lunatics progression

Just to name a few. ESPECIALLY if you have decked into the more subtle things like persuasion, thought control or mercantile. By the end of the game you are so capable and knowledgeable on paper that you should be able to do, well... More.

There is just so much more story potential and content potential there, so much more. Like fuck... Thought control alone could provide like another almost a hidden story underneath the current one. Almost in the same way the Malkavians do in Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodines.

Well, yes that is correct it has, but to be honest anon. It could do with more.
Hence why I'm quite bluntly hoping Infusion isn't a sequel per se, but another expansion or something in between. By the very least SOMETHING that connects the first game with the second game not just with fluff but by crunch as well.

Eh, honestly the engine needs an update. Plus I hate the psi changes so I'm ready for a new game.
But as for connection, underrail infusion will most likely take place in northern underrail with the places we've seen mentioned: Dis, Hex, etc. And I'm going to guess the "canon ending" will be the player character heading up north on the rails as Six asked and we will likely play a different character that intertwines with that story. I'm interested to see what the Godmen are actually. I'm still hoping my time travel theory of the Godmen being distant future faceless is right.

the things you mentioned needs mod and I was dissapointed when learning what Styg's stance on modding his game. Even jank like Stalker was kept alive with mods for Stalker 2 while Underrail got boosted thanks to Sseth and then fizzled out, only once in a blue moon got decent thread like this.

I agree that Styg should do something with mod support for the game like Alex does for Starsector because insane and insane amounts of potential is there and it's kinda lost. The only thing I've heard is that Styg doesn't have anything against modding per se, but is not going to spend ANY time making and/or releasing mod tools for the game because they don't bring any money to the table quite frankly. Now honestly I can understand that completely. Dude doesn't have a day job as far as I'm aware. But just giving out SOMETHING so the players can whip out some modding would be nice. Like I said, it's the wasted potential.

I agree the engine needs updates, which it is getting same with the game most likely being set in the north. But I don't personally dislike the whole concept of you being a NEW random shmuck that eventually ends up meeting their Underrail 1 counterpart. Because that instantly creates/sets in stone just who and what type of character is the canon character for the first game, ultimately it's obviously for Styg to decide, but I'd argue for the freedom of choice for the player. also I understand it is quite obvious that the "canon" ending if you can call it that is the one where you head north.

As for your Faceless theory I like it, but I think that is not the case. I have my own thoughts which I can share in another post because they are so damn long...

Yeah no there is so much lore to unpack. I've read a lot of it but there's not really any collection of it. I could be wrong, but my reasons for believing time travel:
                >leviathans: beings like tchort
                >three godmen are distant future faceless whose society faced some sort of disaster that forced them to travel to the past and crash land in the oculus
                >six knows tchort must die by your hand because you are a man of legend - the origins of the faceless society were involved you killing one of their greatest enemies, a demon like being that they created by accident
                >cube we know is just a really powerful energy source - was it used to power the oculus? perhaps they are fighting over it because to kill a godman you need a strong weapon, and that weapon needs a power source

where did you get any of this?
From what I remember leviathans are void creatures
The godmen are a race who fought against the void creatures
The oculus is a battle station and the monoliths are a weapon that kills void creatures on exposure
Psionics are related to void creatures in some way
Faceless were humans which were experimented upon by the pre collapse corporations

oh and tchort isn't actually a god or an extraterrestrial being, its an amalgamation of all the pre collapse scientists that got created due to massive exposure to mutagen
Six(and other godmen) had been in contact with the corporations for a long time and Dude is one of the scientists who worked for them but is somehow immortal.

All we know about the Godmen are speculations and the pillars. Whatever Azif says is pure speculation from his interpretation of the pillars. This is my interpretation of them.
We know that Faceless are children of Godmen technology, since mutagen was built from fragments of the same Godmen tech that brought psionic potential to humanity.
That follows that Faceless are godmen themselves, and that Tchort is also built from the same thing as godmen since it's just a bunch of scientists mushed together with mutagen.
So it would follow that time travel theory could be plausible. Now, how do you know that the oculus is a battle station and that leviathans are void creatures?

                >Tchort is not a god nor a primordial being as Eidein claims. The answer is more simpler yet sinister: Tchort is a monstrosity, a type of mutant if you will, consisting of multiple Biocorp scientists that got thrown into the mutagen tanks during the hollow earth incident (aka Faceless rebellion). That is confirmed by the faceless commander in Deep Caverns, assuming you have cooperated with the faceless. Also it is implied that there were four godmen and one of them was fed to Tchort by the Tchortists (I haven't confirmed this yet myself, but I'll get there). Ultimately Tchort is nothing more than an abomination that coerced Eidein into forming the institute and act as his medium above, since Tchort itself cannot move. Could Six and the Faceless bullshit you? Possibly but I doubt it. Though evasive and ultra autistic. Both Sic and the Faceless are very honest and relatively direct with the player. Also most, if not all info on this has either been dumped on the wiki or the forums.

This brings me to my next point which is the faceless themselves, godmen and Biocorp/NFT enetually, though by proxy (the juicier stuff and part speculation), which I'll cover in my next posts. I just gotta get a cup of hot coco first. Being the ultimate manchild that I am.

Alright, time to speak about the infamous Faceless.
                >Most of the faceless speculations are bullshit. For example the fact that they kidnap people who they augment. The faceless doctor who operated of Lora Baker and saved her life from Cornell gets borderline insulted by this notion if you mention the rumour to (it?) during your visit to the Faceless camp in Deep Caverns. But the what the faceless themselves are though rather simple, brings more questions into play. Thus I'll give you the simple answer and the more complex one.

                >The faceless are genetic experiments, in layman's terms mutants done by Old Biocorp at Hollow Earth, when it was operational. The evidence is scattered and the exact miniscule details are hazy but the bigger picture is clear. This evidence is hinted at first by the Dude (who calls them: "Half-men, half-gods, half-rock"), and confirmed confirmed by the faceless commander in the deep caverns. Also there tons of secondary information like your discussion with the AI IRIS in Arke power station and the emails in Caerus Residential Block. The key individuals regarding the faceless were Dr. Austen and Dr. Hope who worked at the mutagen tanks for Old Biocorp, most likely regarding genetics. And the experiment (mutant) called Otis, who was the former's assistant. Otis is implied to be the one who started out the hollow earth incident by leading a rebellion of against Biocorp with the help of the other faceless (which ends up creating Tchort). He is also mentioned to have great intellect which made him different compared to the rest. Is he still alive? That we don't know. The faceless commander doesn't reveal this to the player. Though we can speculate that if that is the case Otis is easily over 100 to 150 years at that point and that the technology the faceless use and posses is most likely some of the stuff either stolen...

Six also mentions that the Faceless city/capital is actually not far away from Hollow Earth, which again makes sense considering that the clashes with they have had with Tchortists and their own origin. Now the big question is about genetic makeup of the faceless and the the comments about half-gods, half-rocks by Dude and the comment by Six where he mentions that the faceless are like you (human) and even a part of me (godmen). My personal theory which I believe is supported by most evidence is that though Hollow Earth was a massive research complex it was THE research complex that we know of where Biocorp did their most top priority and classified research, regarding Xeno-Artifacts/Archeology, Mutagen/Genetics research (the faceless), Research into AI (IRIS) and research into VERY advanced Psionics (Tithonus Laboratory) and ultimately the combination of these things into human enchantment and longevity. Now how does this relate to the faceless directly? I believe that Old Biocorp wanted to basically create a human 2.0 to put it simply using the former mentioned branches of research with combination of either replicating, imitating or having acquired godmen DNA, along with Psimorph DNA and Human DNA. This is also supported by the communication between Anton Matveev, Codename: Wight (Ezra), Kirill 'Vovin' Gavrilyuk (Kharon) and Dr D. Slavkovic (Vitek), all Apex Technocrats of Old Biocorp with the latter being rather nihilistic about his current (unknown and severe) illness (which I personally speculate being the same illness the Godmen suffer from) and ultimately turning to cryogenics to prolong his life. I wouldn't be surprised that all of this is more than coincedence. In short, the faceless are race of mutants that are a some sort of combination between humans, godmen and psimorphs in terms of biological origin that rebelled.

Fuck it, I'll clear the info on Dude next. Because it's again rather simple picture once you have all the correct info and aren't a complete brainlet.

                >The dude is a man called Dr. John Dyson, very high ranked scientist of Old Biocorp, who worked as the head of psionics R&D at Hollow Earth. Though not outright stated the evidence is there and quite clear once you browse through the communication logs of Caerus Residential Block. Dr. Dyson's nickname already back then was dude, his laid back (borderline stoner) rhetoric and attitude also matches, though not as obnoxious. Also Dr. Slavkovic mentions he doesn't trust Dr. Dyson and calls him a drunkard, something which Anton comments on that regarding Psionic research Dyson is unmatched. Why does he act the way he does and how is he still alive? This is the speculation part. The obvious answer is that just like Anton and Kirill (and the fact about the position he had at Hollow Earth) he has had enhancements of some kind done to him either cybernetics or genetics or both which have granted him such a long life. Though I think the answer is most likely more nuanced... We know that there is a Godmen monument (mysterious pillars) south of hollow earth. We also know about xeno-archeology and the R&D surrounding that Old Bocorp dabbled in. There are even straight references to Biocorp scientists using the material of the pillars itself. Combine this with all we know of the Shadowlith and the Sørmirbæren. And I'd say it's safe to speculate Dude's longevity has to do with Psionics/Godmen tech instead of the things I mentioned before. It's also safe to speculate that whatever this interaction was, it was also the reason why he experiences visions and why he constantly is getting drunk with Mushroom Brew. Combine all of these factors together and you should be able to understand why he appears as he is. Random and insane hobo, who somehow has equally insane amounts of VERY rare knowledge and insight.

                Any more questions? Kekw

The Nemurian wants to terraform old earth (using ACoNR) before putting people there and Biocorp wants to put super-duper strong human that's able to wishstand the hazard of the post apocalyptic Earth? How exactly does the conflict of interest start so that BioCorp had to gas the Nemurian
After the war how did the Nemurian fractured into the Sørmirbæren and Todd?

From the looks of it the Lemurians were isolationists who stayed in their big cave. This probably meant their military was weak and it was a good opportunity for the large expansionist biocorp to get rid of a potential enemy that could actually grow if they expanded outside their cave since they had technology. Didn't seem Biocorp was all too interested in Lemurian technology, given the untouched state of everything. They just gassed them and left.

Lemurian military wasn't weak, they just never got a chance to fight as they were all gassed.

Sorry, I'm arguing with a... Degenerate, as Tchortists would say.
                >The Nemurian wants to terraform old earth (using ACoNR) before putting people there and Biocorp wants to put super-duper strong human that's able to wishstand the hazard of the post apocalyptic Earth?
Dr. Oldfield says specifically when questioned about the Acorn how he came into contact with an old NFT document regarding the Acorn and habitats NFT was either planning or had already constructed (the info is a bit vague). He also mentions that out of the four habitats, only two were named due to the condition of this document:
                >Lemuria (aka the area of the Black Sea and the facilities there)
                >Horizon (which we can most likely speculate about being on Earth's orbit, or possibly even on the moon)
Also you can find out in Abysal Station Zero either through Todd's split personality rambling or through some other source (console, computer etc. I can't remember...) that one of these NFT habitats was called Atlantis, which is safe to assume is underwater... Somewhere... Who the fuck knows really.
And also Dr. Oldfield says directly along the lines of (and I think he is a credible source due to being literally Supercorporation Historian) how: "The old world was on it's death bed and all the corporations knew that was the case and all the corporations were looking into their own ways of dealing with it. We also mentions way earlier in the questline how the T6 group was pretty much a political/power counter balance to the nation states of the old surface world.
                >How exactly does the conflict of interest start so that BioCorp had to gas the Nemurian.
As the other Anon said. Post Apocalyptic world, any number of reasons could be the case from political ambition to fight for resources.
                >After the war how did the Nemurian fractured into the Sørmirbæren and Todd?
The reason is the Shadowlith monument found in Abysal Station Zero, think of it as an evil/corrupted psi monument akin to the godmen tech.

    What's Tanners endgame?

    Why is Six so vague?

    Is Ezra based? Yes/Yes

    Will Dude return in Infusion?

      Anonymous

      >What's Tanners endgame?
Simple speculation: Survival/Evasion from the rest of the Godmen, namely Six.
      >Why is Six so vague?
Again simple speculation: Because what he says (about you being unable to understand his lingo and motivations etc.) is true... To a degree. And because though he appears as high and mighty, he is ultimately the equivalent of a janitor within his own hierarchy whose been handed a shit job of hunting Tanner. He is like a Ganker janny given god tech and sent to find another individual with god tech among a pack what appear to him as mega retards. And though it frustrates him to no end he is bound to ultimately do his duty. Also it's kinda vaguely implied that he has to operate within certain rules as well, just like Gandalf has to in Tolkien's legendarium.
      >Is Ezra based?
I'd say so. Though that is obviously subjective.
      >Will Dude return in Infusion?
      Hopefully.

      >There is no evidence that Six (and other godmen) have been in direct contact with the Supercorporations
What, you think they just silently managed to land the oculus and then also descent without any of the supercorps noticing?
Tchort knows about their existence which means the scientists from corporations also knew about their existence.
Expedition even spells it out for you as the corpos are researching void creatures, Dude teaches you riftwalking and even in the base game theres the connection between the faceless(pre collapse corporation creations) and godmen

      >What, you think they just silently managed to land the oculus and then also descent without any of the supercorps noticing?
First of all we have no concrete knowledge of when were the pillars or the oculus constructed in the underground, we also have know concrete timeline of humanity pre-descent or the time within the underground. Only bits and pieces. We do know that the Mysterious pillars atleast cannot have appeared post Old Biocorp (and most likely post descent) since it's mentioned how Old Biocorp was studying them and explicitly found them. It's also mentioned by Ezra how the NFT produced Acorns to both themselves and other supercorporations, BUT the alien side/part of of the tech itself was borderline magic to them. And they could only adapt it into form of the Acorns.
      >Tchort knows about their existence which means the scientists from corporations also knew about their existence.
This can mean one (or both) of two things. The biocorp scientist confirmed the existance of xenos (due to the existance of the pillars), but didn't know much else. Cont.

        Cont.

...And secondly the theory that there was a fourth godmen with was fed to Tchort. And actually thirdly now that I come to think of it. We know both Six and Tchort are highly psionic beings, and that Six visited the Deep Caverns all the way up to the gate of Nucleus. So I wouldn't be surprised Tchort has (more) Knowledge through thought control.

        >First of all we have no concrete knowledge of when were the pillars or the oculus constructed in the underground
        >constructed
did you miss literally everything about the game lmao

I can't remember every single detail, though I try. But as far as I'm aware. What I said stands. Azif for example mentions that the origin of the Oculus is speculation and this is also touched upon by Abram. Also Dr. Oldfield, the Faceless Commander, Dude nor the Caerus Residential Block offer any concerete evidence as to when exactly these monuments show up, same goes with the overall timeline of the setting regarding humanity and the supercorporations, only bits and pieces. So instead of being a gay and mocking me, please provide evidence of your claims and on top of that tell me when were the Godmen tech; namely oculus and pillars "set up", so to speak.

It's fun up until you're done with core city and maybe foundry+RC quests. After that most builds become overpowered and combat becomes a chore or you get burned out from having to go through fifteen tiles between a few lines of dialogue.

Each to their own. I just find it funny if you claim it lacks soul, because IMO it's exact opposite and that is what carries the game massively.

Can someone tell me without spoiling much how lovecraftian this game gets?

Good amount. But if I had summarize as simply as I could I'd say this is combination of Fallout, Metro and STALKER with some slight lovecraftian and cyberpunk elements mixed in.

But those Lovecraftian elements IMO are done well, especially the sense utter mystery combined with the ramping up absurdity. Essentially the game answers your questions... With more questions and uncertainty. Something which is pretty key Lovecraftian element. Ultimately play the game and see for yourself.

As the other said do not play on the highest difficulty you really need to know how to cheese every encounter and use one of like 3 viable builds. Even the 2nd hardest is extremely difficult but doable for a new player it what I played on. Odds are very good your build will be so bad that like an hour in you need to remake anyway.
