Anyone else only play this via emulation because of save states? I got tired of my actual cartridge erasing the fricking files, despite me holding down reset when powering off.

I wouldn't emulate it because of save states, I'd emulate it because it's just better to emulate in general.
I sometimes emulate games just because I'm a depressed frick who doesn't even have the power to take my consoles out of the closet and hook them up. Last time I played Zelda 1 was on the Wii just because everything was already set. It's still catching dust near my TV by the way

Probably not even necessary. Couple years ago I finally beat my copy of Zelda from a "just before Ganon" save that I had left it at, but never got around to completing in forever. And how long ago was that, you ask? The Zelda breakfast cereal was still being sold, so whenever that year was.

I never held reset when old games prompted it, I just shut them off and the games always saved

I literally just load a rom on my PC and full screen it and play with whatever the frick I want, usually a keyboard. if I really wanted to feel like a gigantic cucked gay I could use an NES controller too. there is nothing wrong with emulating and the SOUL comes entirely from the experience and your surroundings, not the hardware. I grew out of my gaming pc stuff so I sold it and bought an nes and other stuff. It's just more fun for me. I don't think people like me deserve to be dismissed. Nobody shits on emulator guys nearly as hard. To pretend original hardware has nothing of value is just bizarre.

The hardware for some things is sort of cheap, I guess, but the vast majority of hardware and games are way overpriced right now.
If you can snag a cheap console off ebay then you can save a ton of money by simply buying a flash cart or ODE.

It was a few years ago but I just got it at my local town street market. If an nes is really expensive now then I can understand it more. I just don't like the total hatred I see around here for hardware. I find being away from a computer and an infinite rom list to help me more in enjoying games and I discover games I never would have otherwise

Why don't you use the game's native save feature when you're emulating?
There's a lot of reasons I emulate mostly, and older stuff getting flakier as time goes on is one of them. I don't do too much save states though and still tend to just use whatever save they have in.
