Tape black paper to your screen or crop it out

This. It's the superior version. And with the fastrom hack there's no slowdown or lag.
It's weird how easy the game suddenly gets without input lag.

His advice is solid as its no different to gamers who would tape crosshairs on their monitors.

It's literally part of how the game functions, a CRT monitor would cut it off and devs would have expected this. Every emulator ever has a function to "hide left side" or similar.

It's the loading seam, which was a nes trick to allow more advanced games. Usually most CRT would cut these parts off, but yeah
The game exists because of these techniques

        ?t=120 (the 2 min mark)

Meanwhile, Rare pulling off smooth diagonal-scrolling 8 months earlier without right-edge artifacting on an MC1 chip in what is effectively the precursor to Mario Kart.

did they cover it with sprites?

*MMC1 chip - same as Zelda and Metroid.

did they cover it with sprites?

As per the GIF, the right side is completely visible - not covered up like in say, Felix the Cat.
Same as their even earlier game, Wizards & Warriors (1987), which uses their own custom AOROM MMC.

There may be an overscan option. Those borders were intended to be in the overscan of a CRT.

He's right though. That's not overscan. You should research how Mario 3 works. It's pretty damn ingenious, actually.

I know if you are using an emulator on the wii, there is an option for horizontal or vertical cropping to fix that

Find the "hide overscan" option in your emulator.
