Anyone playing the 1.2 patch? The new evade ability really makes the game feel fresh. Currently working on all the HC achievements. Long way to go with my current character; just made it to Malmouth on Normal. Playing a Forcewave Death Knight.
Also there's a community league that uses its own launcher for server side characters. It's between seasons rn. https://www.grimdawnleague.com/#/
probably the worst arpg ive ever played
interesting. what's the best arpg you've ever played?
for atmosphere and graphics probably D2, last epoch is alright too but the servers are laggy af. for gameplay mechanics ghostlore btfos grim dawn.
>ghostlore
Looks good, thanks for the rec. I'll prob pick it up after I finish hardcore in Grim Dawn.
Ghost Lore looks like complete shit wtf
hey, that anon and his brother worked hard on it!
im not those chinese homosexuals
the character building systems are literally grim dawn but more advanced yet concise. grim dawn has insane amounts of bloat for how simple and boring making a functional end game character is. its about as difficult as chronicon. even wh40k inquisitor is better lmao. hell, wolcen is better too. grim dawn is genuinely the worst contemporary arpg on the market
>wh40k inquisitor
I remember getting this because Lowtax (RIP) talked about it. I found the idea interesting and it was kinda fun but what totally killed it for me was the “power level” stat of gear. Even if you had great gear for your build with good stats on it, it had a totally arbitrary “power level” assigned to it and each mission had a power level too and if your gears power level was too low you got a horrible penalty to damage done and damage taken which made levels impossible. It was a completely arbitrary mechanic with no purpose other than forcing you to grind for new gear. Killed the game for me
>SA
>Proud of it
Hey thanks for giving us that whole LW thing and ruining all of vidya btw. Aren't most of you unironic commies and pedos?
It’s been unusable and irrelevant for many years, anon, but Lowtax was the grandfather of 4chins. And yeah, there’s nothing but commies and troons left, they chased out everyone else long ago.
You're trying too hard, anon
The thing I never really liked was how you basically pick two attack skills and then that it is it. You spend the rest of the game running and spamming those two skills.
If you've successfully killed the Warden, you can pretty much consider the game finished. The rest of it will play exactly the same. Put it on high difficulty, hardcore mode and just play to the Warden. Makes it a short-and-sweet game.
>The thing I never really liked was how you basically pick two attack skills and then that it is it. You spend the rest of the game running and spamming those two skills.
That's every ARPG.
>If you've successfully killed the Warden, you can pretty much consider the game finished. The rest of it will play exactly the same.
lol
lmao even
>That's every ARPG.
This. Perhaps it's unfortunate but I still love Diablo where you're just attacking 98% of the time, so....
>It's the spiritual successor to Diablo 2
Gotta disagree here though. Path of Exile was the closest thing to Diablo 3 and it's not even a contest.
It's a good thing anon was talking about good games like D2 and GD, and not trash like D3 and PoE, like you brought up for some inane reason.
Based
I don't hate D4 though, at least until that post 70 Blizzard skinnerbox grind kicks in with their lootbox and seasonal bullshit.
Last Epoch is quite nice, they have a lot of cool builds, a good setting and engine, and the dot mechanics are unique to that game and a lot of fun.
Sounds dope fren but I'm holding off till the next dlc/expansion/whatever.
>Sounds dope fren but I'm holding off till the next dlc/expansion/whatever.
Same here.
Also, how the frick could someone play ARPGs and dislike Grim Dawn? It's the spiritual successor to Diablo 2. Game is good. I could see someone disliking it if they dislike ARPGs, but the first post is utterly perplexing, if it's not just trolling.
Because it has way too many autistic systems and subsystems. It's moronic and unintuitive. When the strongest builds have illogical point placement where you dip 3 points into random shit instead of getting any actual benefit to topping off an ability chain, it's just Use A Guide nonsense instead of a logical system for effective characters.
I've never had to do this. Perhaps you're too moronic to stack damage types.
Post build
It's been too long for me to run and indulge you on the calculator but my two best were oppressor (oath/necro) for clearing crucible on all difficulty with playerscale pets from constellation, points, and the pestilence volcano as the main skill to generate loads of enemy seeking skeletons, and then oath/demo with that warhammer looking armor, a focus on just the firestrike, oath basic attack line, and mortars for superbossing at which I killed Callandra, never did do Crate tho. I believe I used flashbang for a bit more support stats also.
The oath pet has an aura that gives you a nice DR boost, and the rest of what I chose lined up very well. I'm beyond most websites and stuff when it comes to builds and have experience since ADVENT and various text muds through all iteration of multiple old systems, gold box, crpg, jrpg etc. on how to dismantle RPGs and the imagination to back it up with some RP style, that guy was a warhammer terminator is what I was trying to make work and did.
Downside I tend to do it and forget it all, upside, makes games fresh when I go back to them as here I am waiting for that new dlc to get back into it.
Once you figure a build in GD and get the constellations lining up with the skillset and gear it's pretty fun and rewarding which is why its popularity has endured.
tl;dr
I have no idea what you are talking about here. Can you give some kind of actual example? Because it sounds to me like you just don't know how to build characters.
You don't fill out any trees in any effective build. You put 1 or 2 points then move on in a schizo array. There's no tangible benefit continuing to take an ability further, it's all moronic.
No, I still don't get it. Some abilities and passives have sweet spots, but you often want to take some to 26 as well. I really don't know what you are talking about, especially with the "schizo" buzzword. Can you show an actual grimtools build?
>I need a guide to help construct a feasible character
Sounds like a you problem.
Autists with entire oak trees of obnoxious contrarianism up their ass will be along to dump a bunch of pseud shit on you like
"UI has manhands!" soon.
>It's the spiritual successor to Diablo 2.
Pretty much every arpg is a spiritual successor to D2. That phrase means nothing.
>Pretty much every arpg is a spiritual successor to D2
No. Most modern ones are microtransaction storefronts first, with the game tacked on as an afterthought to facilitate the former.
Lol, I got my first character above level 80 and I have not once used the dodge except when I hit the spacebar by accident. Glad I picked this game back up though, I cleared pretty much all the content on normal and I suppose I'm going to be making time to get mandates for a new character for Fangs of Asterkarn comes out.
I thought I was a badass and tried to fight Callandra but those semi-visible tornadoes are such a pain in the ass. At least it's something to overcome. I'm really pleased with the amount of content in this game.
Waiting for next dlc
>Currently working on all the HC achievements
you probably already know this but i will remind you unprompted anyway
get those resists up
all of them
do not leave one at like 23% and think to yourself "nah it's fine i can tank it there's not a lot that uses that element"
im going to wait for the dlc since i played the game again in 2023 and then the 1.2 patch dropped soon after
Grim Dawn still looks great. The atmosphere and environmental detail, the world-building is really good. It's important to slow down and look around to appreciate it.
True, it has a lot of cool environments and monster designs. It's easy to overlook when I'm always zoomed out, then I get surprised when I look at a wiki page while I'm searching for info and see the high resolution renders of the monsters.

New supporter pack coming. Dat Empyrion drip.
Are there any ARPGs with a minimal focus on loot?
Dark Souls
I was thinking more in the same top-down, mouse-clicking style as Grim Dawn, Diablo, PoE, etc.
Dark Souls' entire existence as a concept outside of its' gameplay revolves around reading descriptions from loot, obtaining hidden weaponry as loot and using dropped and looted resources to improve equipment.
Unless you beat every game naked with your starting weapon- whilst it may not drop in swathes as explosions from every enemy, the loot in Dark Souls was integral to beating the game and having an enjoyable experience.
You can beat Souls games naked and at level 1 so how much you focus on loot is entirely up to you.
this is probably true for any ARPG with loot and you can find videos of such all over YT, im not sure why you thought the possibility of a type of playthrough was enough evidence about how important a mechanic was to the enjoyment of the game.
You can probably complete BG1 without looting or using magic but that doesnt mean that finding items or using spells wasnt important to the design of the game
>this is probably true for any ARPG with loot
It's not
Kingdom Hearts
this is probably the best example, nothing you pick up in KH is at all important to the games core mechanics and im pretty sure alot of people went through the games without even using so much as a potion past a certain point
Soulslikes. Loot is only there for your fashion.
Diablo 4
This is the problem calling Diablo-clones "ARPGs", loot at how people are saying Dark Souls and Kingdom Hearts as if those have any relevance.
Chronicon makes it really easy to find items you need, so it becomes more about upgrading those items instead of finding new ones.
>kill Ravager first try
Sweet, time to go for Mogdrogen next.
>get annihilated by stun and sunder pets
I should have known that not maxing out stun resistance would bite me in the ass one day, time to farm some Dreeg-sect pants.
>respec devotions to try different ones
>resistances almost uniformly drop by 20%
there's levels to this
I refuse to get Forgotten Gods because it would change my favourite loading screen.
Even before the update that let you choose it used to cycle through all 3 loading screens with FG
She’s actually in Forgotten Gods due to popular acclaim for her attributes, anon
Grim Dawn plays like butter on the 'eck. An ARPG completely playable on a pad is what I'd consider godlike.
Jesus. You exist,huh?
I hope it doesn't bother you.
Why would it? I have infinite pity available.
That's nice I guess.
Conduct yourself with more aplomb. Stop guessing.
I don't have to guess, and I don't owe you any respect.
You got a stick up your ass, and need to chill out.
Calm down, kiddo. It was just advice on attaching childish feminine wiggle words like "I guess" onto statements you make.
>need to chill out
I'm as cool as a cucumber.
Why are you like this?
This is another feminine passive-aggressive response, it's open ended and non-declarative and is designed to attack inherent self-doubt with empty judgements. What is "this"?
Grim Dawn?
Good game.
>Kill, Marry, Frick
>verification not required
>Marry, Kill, Frick
I would clear skeleton key dungeons for Anasteria
Game is fun, more enjoyable than PoE, especially during the leveling. Playing a Demo/Soldier with a Two Handed Melee, spamming a buffed fire strike. Nice grinding and mindless fun, love the faction idea, love all these abilities.
>get to around level 20
>start bouncing around between 4 different characters
AHHHH Why does this always happen?!
Different builds?
Different builds. Sometimes you want to get up in the enemy's face, sometimes you get tired of holding down the attack button, sometimes you want big magic spells, other times you want to zip around the battlefield.
Based, that's a sign of a good game. I'm personally blowing through the story with a melee wacker, but I want to try using Demo's Granado skill only for another character.
It's got loads of builds, tons of skill synergy. Some are hilariously overpowered, some are borderline worthless. But all are fun if you find a good mix that you like.
It's a sort of "pick your own level of challenge".
you should really stick a character to the end game, where you get access to leveling tools. i can create a new guy and get him to level 30 in like 10 minutes.
>Barely getting into Act 4
>Finished THE Secret sidequest
Kino, I probably could've guessed the last rock was in east marsh but I legit didn't see it, I feel guilty for googling.
It's pretty blatant on the text for the Runestone of Bysmiel. Whether that makes it better or worse that you googled it, I don't know.
It felt like it was going to be more cryptic, but I was in the area before I got the stones, must've forgot that giant rock was at that spot.
Still a great side quest.
Speaking of secrets, I wish there were a curated list somewhere of secret areas in the game. I've been playing for nearly a decade and I'm aware of most areas but I didn't know about new additions like the Arkovian Colosseum. I do vaguely remember the Docks at least (from when I found it a second time) and think it was cool that they FINALLY fixed the Twin Falls bridge.
go to grimtools, there are extensive maps and lists of one-shot chests, shrine locations, totem spawn sites.
Why do these green things last so long? They keep following and damaging me long after the mobs are dead. It's a good thing I have a ton of health regen, or browsing the merchant would have been a pain.
Pretty sure they're meant to provide pressure to keep moving. I don't think anyone likes them except the devs.
>pressure to keep moving
>next to a merchant that sells potentially useful MIs
What's wrong with the devs? Couldn't they at least move the merchant to a safer place?
same thing happens in the ancient grove. shit sucks when you are rerolling the shop over and over.
Have they said anything about Asterkarn? I'm just waiting for that to come out before jumping back in.
