>windows
no, it wouldnt work well. especially for emulators. where not taking all cpu on idle is beneficial to speed
Yeah I'm talking /vr/ stuff here. Mostly stuff I could probably emulate on my phone already up till Saturn, N64, some Dreamcast.
Depends on the spec but no reason it wouldn't
Windows is fine for emulation. Better than Linux in some ways.
no screen tearing and proprietary nvidia drivers is not "some ways"
if emulator using software rendering then linux is 100% more betterer
It'd work even worse than if you didn't
Afaik these are designed for shit like info displays that run a slideshow and some scripts at best. I'd say you're better off wasting your money elsewhere.
have these gotten better? remember having one of the first and it could barely run windows
Yes, but don't expect 1:1 pixel mapped 240p.
The real issue is the price. Those sticks aren't cheap.
They're better for running old PC games than emulating anything past the 16 bit generation. Low power x86 machines are weaker than ARM RISC and the likes, but they can run Fallout 2 and Amiga emulators just fine. There's not a single good Amiga emulator for android.
You are better off with normal PC.
These aren't plug and play. They need HDMI cable, power brick, and other shits.
To be fair the “stick pc” also supplies power via usb
Trust us dude, this isn’t the emulation pc you’re looking for
>obiwan.jpg
>power brick
Stick PC isn't magic and needs power like any other computer. It might boot/run from USB power tv but certainly won't reach full performance. There's a reason an adapter is included.
The tiny package is a cool trick but a mini pc at the same price will offer m.2 and sata drive options, better cooling, more USB ports, and a vga output for CRT monitors
Like everyone else said they’re pretty piss. It’s for shit like traveling salespeople that JUST have to run a text-only PowerPoint, or have a display kiosk. Might as well get a SFF pc that will obliterate it in performance.
Not that particular unit but mini PC with same cpu (j4125),
Does PSX, DC, and PSP @ 1080p or better. Can do some PS2 and most Gamecube @ 720p.
Cooling is slightly substandard. Laptop cooler fixed that & allowed raising CPU power limit.
Pic related.
>HDMI > composite converter, would it work well?
no, it'll be 480i only. i mean, it would work, but it wouldn't work well.
the stick might be able to run most 4th gen games but would probably shit itself on 5th gen
Yeah Black person I don't "get" the 240p vs 480i thing.
I've also never had a progressive scan CRT either.
the difference is clear on most sets. 3D stuff will look fine either way imo, but 2D stuff that was 240p originally looks like shit when it's 480i because the flickering is much more obvious. if your set is small enough it might not matter, but anything bigger than say, 14 inches will show flickering from interlacing
>I've also never had a progressive scan CRT either.
ever had a computer monitor? then you did.
I'm monitor this PC as a proud owner of Kangaroo PC I've no clue what the frick to do with. Pic related.
>Intel Atom x5-Z8500 1.44 GHz Processor
>2GB LPDDR3 RAM
>32GB eMMC internal storage
>Integrated Intel HD Graphics
Wat do?
>monitoring this PC
This thread, went full moron. But yeah nowadays using this device for browsing the Internet is a very slow experience, you can realistically forget about HD playback or streaming, can slap up to Win 10/11 on it though. Had XP on it for a while just for shit and giggles too. Could do Linux I guess, but not sure which distro would be optimal either.
>very slow
it should be ok. Have tablet/laptop hybrid with similar processor and it's 100% usable for typical tasks, light gaming and emulation.
Shortcoming is eMMC speed. Run something on an external SSD, no problem. Run from the internal drive and expect to wait.
Check the memory speed in the bios. Many are set wrong and you get about 50% more performance by changing to 'auto'
Win 10 32bit, 21H2
install gentoo
I'm a poorgay, I want an emu box that can run 5th gen and some 6th gen stuff.
I can get a "Lenovo Tiny M720q Mini PC" with a Pentium G5420 for 130€.
You think this is a good deal?
The single thread performance is decent and it even comes with a 256gb m2 SSD only the IGPU seems weak UHD-Graphics 610.
dont know about 6th gen on something like that
dolphin would probably be pushing it and i think thats the lightest one
>I'm a poorgay
Then get an optiplex of similar, don't bother with these tiny boxes. They usually have T-series or similar CPUs which are typically underpowered and have no integrated graphics. They usually have a higher price due to their size, home server fodder.
>Then get an optiplex of similar
Can't find one with a better single thread performance and most of them are in rather huge cases.
>They usually have T-series or similar CPUs which are typically underpowered and have no integrated graphics
Well like I said it has both an IGPU and a good single thread performance.
I can't find any game or emulation benchmarks for this CPU though which worries me.
here is a computer i built for my brother today. its a refurbished optiplex and some 4 gb discrete graphics card that took 2 seconds to drop in. im sure it could emulate well up to 6th gen at least tbh. got the optiplex 9020 (NOT small form factor) and asus gtx 1050ti on Amazon for <$500
i wanted one of these for the longest time, but never ended up getting one. i missed the bottom of the curve, and now they are going back up
You didn't miss anything.
Ever use a Jxxx Celeron? The ones that struggle to run PSX games? Now imagine something 1/4 the speed. This is a USB powered win PC, you're not going to play PS2 or DC any time soon.
See
J series Celeron have no problem running psx
>struggle to run PSX games
what kind of broke dick written in visual basic ass emulator are you trying to run, this has been a complete non-problem since Athlon XP days
