Why/How did AoE2 win the RTS genre?

AoE2 is the closest thing to a perfect RTS in existence and arguably a perfect game.
It's a shame because Rise of Nations is objectively the better historical RTS.
It does everything right in terms of gameplay, and it's based on real-life history, so it has lasting appeal because everything it's based on will never change and is constantly relatable to every historic period and culture depicted within it.
It transcends the shallow juvenility of franchise IPs by doing this. This is why it has outlasted SC & all others.

I would say yes, there is a ton of single player content, between campaigns, historical battles and skirmish (vs AI)
also the map editor is really good, so there is a ton of user made content
aoe2 is mainly a singleplayer game, only a tiny fraction play multiplayer and not even all of those play competitive multiplayer
I've had AoE2 since the original release and to be honest, the only time I ever played online was when I was playing with friends. 99% of my thousands of hours was skirmish vs AI.
One thing that keeps SC from being good and cursing it to fade into obscurity is the refusal by the fanbase to allow any changes that would objectively improve the game because they are scared shitless they might have to adapt their playstlyle after 20 years. Even just the idea of better AI pathfinding or better hot ground keys is forbidden, let alone new units that could actually balance out the gameplay. So it's basically just a asiatic clicker at this point, that only a dwindling korean population cares about (and even they have started to switch over to AoE2). Meanwhile AoE2 still gets expansion packs and updates.

You know that if back in 1999 they released a patch with better pathfinding where units would simply move out of the way to let other AI through instead of just bottlenecking, everyone would be down for it. Now such a simple idea is taboo to the dying playbase. Not even someone like Tasteless can make a living off SC in Korean anymore because of how dead it is becoming. Meanwhile, AoE2 is thriving and koreans are moving to it.
Why push for changes to a game you wouldn't play regardless? The Brood War fans like it as it is, whatever, let them.
This is a interesting question. You assume people wouldn't play it because of improvements while also it would alienate their old fans. Yet AoE2 proves that that assumption false. Talented players adapt and new fans come for new content which keeps the whole thing fresh and everyone benefits.

How does this work anyway? Are we going to get these civs aged up to a more appropriate time period or is it literally AoE1?
I think it's the latter. AoE1 ported directly into AOE2
It's just using the updated engine, but the civs are all AoE1 civs and can only be played against AoE1 civs. But you get much better pathfinding and map generation.
So how long till mods break those restrictions and let me mash Aztecs and Egyptions into each other?

I'm genuinely coming back to AoE2 just for this. Took a break for a good while and missed out on some of the previous additions, but porting AoE1 into it has me hyped. Is it going to be all the civs from AoE1 or just the 3 on the cover?

I bought both AoE this past steam sale. I was planning on starting with the first one, but my pc struggled really fricking hard with it just by looking at a couple of trees. Tried AoE2 out of curiosity and the benchmarks were locked 60fps with bazillions troops on screen (with the hd pack enabled). I welcome the dlc, I will be able to play the first one after all.

I think smaller ratio of unit size to map size really helps. Even on the largest map starcraft units are rather big compared to aoe

Pretty simple. The genre died years ago, so the few people who were still clutching onto it kept playing the same old games.
Microsoft eventually saw a business opportunity here since they owned the franchise. First they released the rather bad HD edition that's little more than a widescreen mod and a couple of modded civs, but later they launched the definitive edition that's everything the fans wanted. It's a very rare case of a remaster actually improving upon the original.
How is Age of Mythology? Should I wait for the remaster?
It's fun and has an actual story but don't expect AoE2 levels of quality. Also the chink DLC is dismal, skip it.
