The shitty online that was a backstep and the cutscenes being longer at crucial moments made it worse. I don't hate it, maybe I could enjoy it now, but coming from X&Y I was livid. Having to press a on people while running in a circle for online features is mind numbing.

The online is shit in SM. The whole festival plaza stuff is terrible. In X&Y you didn't have to grind to use certain features online, you simply had them from whatever point onward.
online has to be the worst reason to play one of the official games when showdown exists. showdown makes cart online 100% obselete
Not "in retrospect", I said it at the time too. This is the best region, with great games. People just like to hate everything and shat on it unjustified.
I always liked them, despite the small maps and lack of gyms, it had some of the best pokemon designs and best characters
i always hated them i find them the worst games in the series the trials were a shit replacement and was relieved to see gyms back next gen the pokemon designs were mostly shit and they were fricking slow

I will concede and apologize. I didn't like them much at the time but in retrospect they feel like the last games with proper effort and polish put into them despite its flaws.
But to your points here I disagree with some and I still think you're praising the gen too highly.

It's a nice comfy place but much more linear than the previous couple gens. It's an entire region of islands in the ocean and yet there's almost nowhere to surf, a true wasted opportunity.
