I started doing the BoS questlines recently, and that one refugee girl they send you to get back from the raiders is one of the most infuriating characters Bethesda has probably ever made. If she were in any other fallout game, you would be able to pop her head like a zit and be done with it.
I know, I've been trying to get through some of the content I missed out on. I wanted to try some of those expeditions, only to get a bunch of daily quests I have to get through first like "get 50 steel parts" and decided against it for now. In spite of some of my complaints, its not so bad. Appalachia is probably the best 3d Fallout map they've done so far.
You can do expeditions by clicking on the verti-bird on the upper right of the map.
You don't have to get fuel anymore. And you can do the expeditions as many times as you want.
I'm just glad it has more than one biome for once, or at least areas that are visually distinct from on another. 4's wasteland in particular bores me to tears, Samey looking blue haze dead forests everywhere. The glowing sea and Boston where cool, but the rest is probably the most visually bland setting they've ever done.

Not in any Bethesda Fallout. They constantly make a ton of quest npcs essential.

It's still overcrowded with all the NPCs that were added.
Their original "no npc at all" approach was too extreme, but I think they've hit the right balance now.

The BOS is a scout party and they're supposed to report back to home base and there is a quest about that stuff and you have to make a tough decision.
