It was Nelo. According to community posts on gameFAQs and TvTropes, Nelo and Player 2 are from a world other than Earth. They're citing a light novel I can't tell you anything about.
Also, Tsuchiya said in the DX prerelease stream that Player 2 is Nero's older sister.

In the first game your best friend dies and you meet a giant space turd who tells you about the bad guys trying to end the world. Later on you discover your best friend is alive and working with them.
In the sequel you discover that everything you were told was a lie, they're actually trying to save the world and all your actions were hampering them, you realise your best friend was telling you the truth but you were too ignorant to listen. Then you play as the best friend and proceed to actually save the world.
I’d argue Alex was always portrayed as the main villain even from the start, but good choice regardless.
I'm very sad that Tsuchiya seems to have taken a permanent back seat at Gust and they aren't making more song magic games. I guess Trinary failing was the final nail in the coffin, or maybe he's just getting old and is tired of directing.

It was a story focused mobile game with a short anime tie-in and episodic content releases. You would communicate with 5 girls (technically 6) and raise your relationship level with them, dive into their minds cosmosphere-style and solve their traumas, text with them, etc. while a main storyline also played out.
The revenue from the game was supposed to come from buying crystals that were a resource you need to choose dialogue options, and from the gacha where you rolled for battle upgrades. The thing is though, it was very generous for f2p players if you just logged in every day and did your dailies with the crystals, and it wasn't hard, so there wasn't ever a reason to pay for the gacha. There were no guilds, co-op, PvP or leaderboards either, so there was no point whaling for a maxed out team. I guess you could call that very user friendly, but from a business perspective it means they probably didn't make much money.
