Arcanum

I've never played Arcanum before, what should I know before starting? I've got the unofficial patch and the character that I want to make is a tech-based gunslinger dwarf, but from what I've heard everybody say that's a bad idea for a first playthrough, but I REALLY want to play that character. How bad is it going to be?
Also, feel free to discuss the game in this thread

The best thing you can do is just play the game and avoid meta builds or "the best way to play" and this is true for every game in existence except maybe soulslikes that require you know where key items are

Oh okay, I thought that this was one of those hard-to-get-into games so that's why I asked

I tried to play the game but its so comfy that I start to get sleepy. Gonna try again.

From the very little I've played it indeed is very comfy!

The Unofficial Arcanum Patch is absolutely mandatory, since it fixes a 1000+ bugs; restores portraits and playable races; fixes broken schematics and quests etc.

      Already got it!

Play as a tech-based gunslinger dwarf. It'll be harder, but more rewarding.
Most players consider games only from a optimization POV, which is not always fun.
Do what is fun for you.

      This game is amazing!

I really like dwarves and especially inventor dwarves in fantasy, they're my favourite race in everything
I just hope it's not gonna be hair-pullingly difficult or frustrating y'know?

        >I just hope it's not gonna be hair-pullingly difficult or frustrating y'know
My first ever playthrough was a gunslinger dwarf, was not as bad as people make it out to be, but I also had a little melee ability as backup because you will have ammo problems at start

Also, keep combat to turn-based only. Several mechanics and spells become so OP they break the game if you play in real-time mode.

Interesting, most people that I've heard talking about it said that it's better to keep it real-time but set it on turn-based when you start getting deleted in 5 seconds

It's the opposite. The game system's clearly weren't designed for real-time combat - for God's sake, archers literally shoot at you at the rapidity of a machine gun, and you can click-spam spells.

exception being the black mountain mines, that's tedious in turn-based

Literally nothing, it's an actual moron game which is why ecelebs cling to it.

Dogshit game that /vrpg/gays worship because it's old and normal people would dislike it. See, /vrpg/gays like what normal people hate because society has utterly rejected them. This has, in turn, made them hate society, normal people, and all that normal people like. They'll sit there and pretend to like a 50 year old, primitive, uninspired horseshit game instead of working out, getting laid and having a normal life.

I don't like to play many old games, but Arcanum genuinely wowed me. I played it for the first time about 2 years ago. I went into it with a clear character concept the way OP has, and I was really able to play it. Honestly believe Arcanum to be one of the best crpgs made. That said, 7 years ago I couldn't get into it and bounced off.

That being said the writing and voicework especially is still leagues better than more recent shit like bg3 or wotr, but I think I'll just try playing a game like tyranny which seems to have a cool setting and decent writing (at least in the beginning acts for what people say) as opposed to playing this broken shit again.

      >cut my post in half
basically I never got into this game after like 5 attempts because the UI, gameplay and even some writing decisions are moronic.
I remember the sheriff of the first town killing me on the spot for calling him incompetent for failing to get some outlaw or something, moronic.
The only good thing about the game is the setting and I can enjoy that without even playing the game.

Imagine insulting random strangers, especially when they are law enforcement. I'd put you down on the spot too. Got enough shit to deal with. I don't need another jackass coming to my town stirring up trouble.

It is one of those crpgs where you make your player character and the rest of your party are premade characters you come across in the world.

I would HIGHLY recommend you look up who the other party member possibilities are and how to unlock them. Then decide which kind of character you are going to make based on the party members you want. Some of the companions are easily missable or require very complex/difficult means to unlock them. Having knowledge of this beforehand will give you a much smoother experience so you won't be playing to 50 hours and end up having your roster plan completely fricked.

The game also has strict game mechanics revolving around magic VS technology. Eventually healing spells will NOT work on tech characters and tech items will NOT work on magic characters. Keep that in mind when deciding what your party is going to be.

Hm, I guess that's a way to play but the way I like to play CRPGs is by, y'know, roleplaying. I generally dislike minmaxing just for the sake of gameplay if that makes any sense

        Anonymous

It's not exactly about minmaxing and playing with the best possible party. There are multiple options to choose from. It is just about choosing the best options right for you.
If you want to be a magic caster then it's best to look up the party members to shoot for that compliment that character and so on depending on whatever character you want to play as.

Ogres can't use pistols, just so you know. There's literally no animation, so you can't equip this weapon type on them. The lore reason is their fingers are too fat for the handgun triggers.

Yeah I found a hunting rifle and have equipped my companions with the best melee weapons available too me. I'm one level up away from being able to craft the repeating rifle.
