It's for people that thought the souls community wasn't enough of a toxic shitheap. The kind of people that brag about their PTSD and nerve pain after completing the Path of Pain in Hollow Knight.
Only a zoomer would use the term toxic in the manner of your post, and have some sort of intricate knowledge of the “souls community “ or hollow shite. Either that or you’re a homosexual. have a nice day
as someone who's not really into shmups on the level of bullet hells i wouldn't really consider that particular community toxic. autistic maybe but not toxic.
on an unrelated note, why is the writting in hollow knight so fricking gay and insufferable? it takes itself way too serious, i like the game but every piece of dialog just makes me cringe
honestly most indy games are artsy fartsy like that. i don't get why people put them all on a pedestal or treat them as a gold standard when 90% of them try to be some sort of pretentious art house schlock.
and don't get me fricking started on THE STATE of indie horror.
Flip phones had outrageously powerful hardware for what they were supposed to do. People just have a warped sense of capabilities because everything you saw was J2ME trash written by wet-behind-the-ears "programmers" who had only had a video game described to them chinese whisper style.
Every now and then something impressive happens because someone at Motorola gave a company the native API to play with.
I've played Mushihime once, liked the aesthetic but frick me I have no idea how to dodge THAT many bullets. I know that hitboxes are really small but I can barely see myself and boss, not even speaking of moving on screen.
I've had a double disc with Giga Wing 2 and Mars Matrix as a kid, that was my first bullet hell game. I didn't like GW2, its Bible-esque motives, ugly character portraits, incoherent plot and soundtrack, everything was off putting. I thought that maybe it's because I wasn't used to anime and bullet hells back then, maybe it's actually good. Replayed it recently and nope, it's still ugly shit.
Mars Matrix, on other hand, was just about right. Played it a lot.
They're great.
After you acclimate yourself to BULLETSBULLETSBULLETS it feels like playing an intense puzzle game.
The goal isn't really to dodge the bullets. It's great if you can do that, but it's much more effective to already be where the bullets aren't. You do that by looking at the pattern and imagining what it will look like in five seconds, figure out what the safest spot will be, and how to get there. Once you arrive, you imagine what it will look like five more seconds in the future and repeat. But you also want to make sure that you aren't backing yourself into a corner, so at the same time you need to be loosely planning the next ten, twenty seconds- and execute all of these plans at the same time under a lot of stress.
It's a thinking game. When I play I feel like I'm working my brain out much more than my fingers.
Some stages feel even more puzzle-like because they're really hard if you face them head on, but really easy if you come up with an out-of-the-box solution. I felt like a fricking genius the first time I had the idea to fly BEHIND the boss to dodge an attack.
Dodging is very difficult and it's the wall that prevents more people from enjoying the genre, but in general you should only need to do a difficult dodge if you've already done something wrong. Once you get good at it though it feels AMAZING when you pull off a crazy dodge.
I really can't recommend the genre enough.
If you're having trouble building up the experience you need to enjoy shooting games because you just keep dying, try looking into level-based games like Shoot the Bullet.
Instead of having a limited number of lives to beat the whole game, you have a level select and overcome bosses one phase at a time, taking as many tries as you want. You don't ever lose progress so it's much more forgiving.
>level-based games like Shoot the Bullet
Do you know of any more games like this? Don't care if they're retro or not. I like these a lot more than the standard shmup that's designed for 1ccing, but I've had trouble finding ones that have proper gameplay. Usually they're just garbage mobile games with babby patterns and a focus on metaprogression at the expense of dodging.
The only ones I know of are the other Touhou scene games and Qute's games.
You mentioned Touhou, but you might not know of the fangame Moedan by D.N.A. Softwares. I haven't played it in a while, but I remember enjoying it.
Princess Remedy in a World of Hurt is another good one, I've probably played it close to a dozen times. Haven't ever played the sequel though. The same guy made a few other shooting games that might interest you; I particularly like Hero Core.
The PC version of ToHeart2 comes with a very short cute-em-up called Super Sweets Scramble that I'm rather fond of.
There's a DS/Wii game called Geometry Wars Galaxies that's level-based. No cute girls but still very fun.
The Flash RPG series Epic Battle Fantasy made a spin-off game called Bullet Heaven that's level based. It's a moderately entertaining distraction.
I'll also just include a general recommendation to check out PlatineDispositif's games if you haven't already; if you think the stuff I listed is cool you'll probably enjoy his body of work.
That's about everything I can think of. Happy dodging!
I always preferred ones like R-Type or Metal Black. Their scenery and set pieces help draw me into them in a way that a screen full of pulsating pink orbs wouldn't.
shoot the bullet owns. glad to see some appreciation for it.
I always preferred ones like R-Type or Metal Black. Their scenery and set pieces help draw me into them in a way that a screen full of pulsating pink orbs wouldn't.
Play ikaruga, reach nirvana, pour mtn dew and gatorade down your mouth and into your butthole, scream as you fondle your nipples after getting through half of the first stage, rinse and repeat.
Like a lot of things they're fun until you let it take over your life. Get an arcade stick and some low THC high CBD weed, boot up a Cave game and try not to chop off your dick and have a good time.
shmups are fundamentally very similar to arcade obstacle games like the irritating maze, except that game is at least honest enough to say that’s it’s irritating in the title
Ooh, let me move a pixel to the left to get in between these two bullets that are coming at me. Now I'm going to just keep moving ever so slightly while holding down the fire button.
OK, I held down the fire button for 10 minutes and have moved a grand total of 15 pixels during that entire time. The boss is dead. I feel so accomplished.
If you learn the basics like bullet streaming, ir not staying back, you start to have so much fun you dont even notice the ocd kick in.
Dont let noreflex seethers stop you from trying.

there is nothing "RELAXING" about bullet hell shmups
im not sure why i am drawn to them
i like going in blind not 'practicing' maps
i like to try to use my intuitionESPskillreaction time
i enjoy seeing how far i can get without having to quarter-munch
i get in an autistic 'zone' and start going hard as frick
a few other games get me like this,
tempest 2000, defender on the 2600, gunbird, gg aleste 2, etc
i dont score chase, get competitive
i just enjoy that type of gameplay from time to time
i have a few arcade pcb. superguns
rgb scart to s-video converters, sony pvm
custom arcade sticks
everything you would need
i probably go into shmup mode about 2-3 times a month
beat a shmup on pc engine, saturn, genesis
then its out of my system for awhile
Pretty sure it is OCD. I only enjoy Touhou for the lore, the art, and the music. And this has been true of me for the past decade and a half. I only played the games for a total of 10 minutes in all this time.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH this is driving me crazy. it's so damn difficult.
Didn't Live Wire do the first Mushi? But yeah if Futari is the next ShotTriggers release that'd be preferable, especially since that means it'll get a good physical release
Yeah, I was basically just wondering if we were stuck waiting for Live Wire to do it, or if M2 could swoop in.
I feel like DaiOuJou was kind of an exception because the 360 port was so infamously shit that it needed a fresh version
I guess M2 already did it on the 360 wtf?
I never knew futari had a console release
so even less of an excuse for them not to release it now

Yeah Futari 360 was one of the bigger releases alongside ESPgaluda 2 because they're both region free. The latter got a port-over by Live Wire, but that's also due to it being done internally by Cave (seemingly).
I genuinely forgot Futari 360 was M2, so yeah I guess it's gonna be ShotTriggers. A bit of a sad day for PC players but I suppose they can just emulate the Switch port (or stick to Xenia)

I assumed it was because of the online store either subsidizing fees to gain content or just general ease of development compared to ps3.
The only people who play those types of game tend to be autistic.
they are based enough to try to figure out how to lower input lag, and they obsess over controllers.

You are the zoomer for talking about games that are not retro on a retro game board. Please take your new homosexualy indie shit some place else.
lmao shut up homosexual the way you worded your previous comment absolutely outs you as the zoomer here.
>toxic
I hate how homosexuals took such a great adjective like this and turned it into the gayest term of all time.
Corrosive has become my new go to, it's yours for free.
I've been using caustic for a while now, works every time in place of toxic

Souls games didnt exist when mushi came out.
Protip: say "a bunch of gays" instead of toxic when referring to a community
lmao casual homosexual
>i-if people brag they are good at video games and I'm not.. they are le toxic!!
Unironically have a nice day or go back to the le reddit, you don't belong here
What is this, danmaku for ants?
It's a screenshot of the lost Mushi port for flip phones.
You're shitting, there's no way a flip phone could render that much projectiles. Even DS port of Ketsui got less on screen bullet saturation.
Flip phones had outrageously powerful hardware for what they were supposed to do. People just have a warped sense of capabilities because everything you saw was J2ME trash written by wet-behind-the-ears "programmers" who had only had a video game described to them chinese whisper style.

Some of them like Touhuhuhuh, kind of.

i think they're fun at first but they get really boring after awhile
Meme example
Try older ones like Battle Garegga or early Touhou games
Fun Cute em ups > 5thgen+ Horizontal shmups > 5thgen+ vertical shmups > 5thgen+ bullet hells > 1st-4th gen non-cute-em-up shmups
Spoken like a shitter with zero clears
Bullet hell games are essentially this game at a macro level. But instead of gas you're holding down the fire button.
high IQ take
When you master about half of in-game patterns and start avoiding them flawlessly, you may sometimes enter that mythical state of flow. It feels nice.
That's not what ocd means you dumbshit
Ocd is when you release a boomer virus because you hate the middle class
Just use bombs, lil homie.

very fine line, limit your sessions to 1hr

Cut off your benis so that you'll only think with your brain when gaming.
