i mean it's partly correct that xiv and wow are not real mmos, xiv moreso. that statement by itself isn't a judgment about the quality of the games though. it's just an observation about what type of gameplay that's being offered. there are plenty of great online games that are not mmos

massively multiplayer indicates that you can reasonably expect interactions with a large number of players within the same instance on a regular basis

i'm not sure about other people, but for me, it doesn't even have to be a bilateral interaction, if i'm able to move about within one instance and see a large variety of players busy doing different things, that unilateral experience of seeing all these players sharing the game world with me captures the feel of an massively multiplayer game for me. ffxiv doesn't do that because the vast majority of players are either afk or inside a 4/8 player shard

yeah ffxiv feels like one giant lobby. even running from one town to the next and seeing different people at a fishing hole, slaying goblins and cows on the side of the road, tanning leather near the bank as i'm running around makes the world feel alive with people. i'd do my monkey madness quest and see people leveling combat stats at the temple, doing the agility course or doing the same quest as me at a different stage. sometimes we'd start chatting but even if we didn't, it just felt nice sharing the world with all these other people going about their business
