What other Quake games are there? It's pretty much Quake and maybe Quake 2. Quake 4 is a rancid piece of shit, and by far the worst of the Id Tech 4 games.

The name is a leftover from when the game was envisioned as more of a traditional fantasy experience (inspired by some of Carmack's DnD sesions), with "Quake" being the main character's name.

quake 4 is a weird dudebro military shooter of the time but has some cool ideas and gets more fun once you get your new "abilities", I didn't bother finishing it but it might be some peoples cup of tea

Anyway, yes they are. Quake 1 and 2 are both great. The reason Quake is dead today it because it took the multiplayer pill so hard.

Quake 1 is amazing for its atmosphere mixing gothic castles and industrial military bases. I liked the monsters in 1 more than what we got in 2, they're more memorable and unique and the chemistry between them makes for cool fights and oh shit moments.
2 is bigger but lost a lot of the soul 1 had.
Just played Quake 4. Very linear, but still enjoyable. Hard as frick boss fights.
they're boring and simple. this is coming from somebody who has seen pictures of cooller in the hot tub in the early 2000s. the update expansion from last year was ok to play through. they're on par with modern boomer shooters, so if you like those you'll probably like quake.

It's an extremely fun but foreboding and eerie game.

All the monster AI and weapon tweaks in copper are present regardless of difficulty, but yeah Nightmare is the difficulty directly changed by the mod as well.
I just think players should start on Hard regardless of whether or not they mod. Medium isn't that challenging and gets people used to bad habits about tanking damage from shamblers and fiends.
Play the Quake 1 rerelease with all the official campaigns, then download Ironwail and play Arcane Dimensions, then download the halloween & christmas map packs from the last 5 or so years.
Some people love alkaline but I think it sucks.
