Divine Divnity
I forgot about that game I remember trying to play it but couldn't get it to run on a modern system. is it party based but uses real time combat?
no, a crpg is something like icewind dale or baldur's gate. I get that gothic is an rpg with a real time combat system but arpg in this context refers to games like diablo or grim dawn. vtm redemption is effectively a crpg with a party and the ability to pause combat for tactical decision making but it's combat system is action oriented like diablo.
So Grim Dawn but with story, quests, actual characters, etc.?
Dragon Age: Origins was sort of like that. The combat was very action heavy.
NTA but dragon age origins is closer to the Baldurs gate/Icewind dale end of the spectrum.
I recently got into VTM:R recently and I fell in love with it. I was very into the plot and characters and writing, which I was shocked because it’s so rare. I made a thread on it a week or two ago, prob dead now. It’s a bit janky but I got the GOG version working fine with minor tweaking. If it sounds at all interesting to you, check it out.
I did start playing VTMR a couple of years ago, but not for very long. I think I went all the way through the really long and confusing caves and killed some weird boss. I think the boss was a Tzimisce or something?
Anyway, this probably isn't what you're looking for but if you've never played Revenant, give it a try.
Sounds like the silver mines, first dungeon of the game, kinda a tutorial. It does pick up after that, if you didn’t hate it already. Note that on modern rigs the gamma is busted and set to minimum and so you’re basically blind in the dark even with a torch. There’s a direct x wrapper that fixed it
Revenant is as underrated as it is unfinished
but the 1st 1/3 of the game is pure gold
also it's sad as shit this gameplay formula never had any successors
dragon age origins is definitely a traditional crpg the combat is paused based like all the crpgs form black isle, I played origins already and I did enjoy it but it's not action based.
no
I would definitely like to play it but I couldn't get it to run on a modern pc
>modern pc
Works fine for me. Maybe try dgVoodoo 2?
I use voodoo for redemption and it works great especially for adjusting the brightness but I couldn't get dd to even launch, I tried a lot of stuff to get it to run.
Well, there's always those weird setups that defy older games. I've used cnc-ddraw with some games before.
Oh, usually this requires putting the game in software mode too.
No, Divine Divinity doesn't have a party, but it does combine the hack-and-slash Diablo thing with the quests, dialogue, exploration, and such you would expect in a cRPG. It's definitely a hybrid.
Bitcher, Arcanum in real time mode.
Came there to post that. Plus Beyond Divinity and Divinity 2.
the witcher? that's far from a crpg it's basically an action adventure game with rpg elements, no party and no class customization.
>Arcanum in real time mode
I tried that game, the real time mode was really bad.
I enjoy spiders games I guess things like greedfall and bound by flame are technically similar to what's being asked, but greedfall is definitely not an arpg in the style of diablo or anywhere close to things like bg or icewind.
nox is just a straight forward arpg
The Gothic series, maybe?
Diablo shit is so anti-immersive, it's just a completely opposite vibe than what I want from RPGs
does elder scrolls count?
sacred 1&2
Greedfall?
Nox?
Seems like the OP is asking for isometric CRPGs with Diablo combat specifically. They're all pretty old as this combination is no longer popular (and I actually doubt it was ever popular, it was just a dumb trend forced by greedy publishers trying to chase Diablo's money trail). A few off the top of my head:
- Dungeon Siege series
- Inquisitor (2012, not the upcoming slop)
- Kult: Heretic Kingdoms
- Lionheart (it's bad, don't play it)
- Divine Divinity
- Nox (somewhat light on the CRPG stuff though)
- Arcanum (kinda, but it basically plays like a RTwP game without the actual pause, which is extreme jank, so the turn-based mode is highly recommended)
Jade Empire and KOTOR1/2
Nope.
