POSTAL Brain Damaged is my favorite immersive sim

Wtf does a game need to be considered an immersive sim? I never seen anyone actually describe it, just that System Shock and Deus Ex is that.
What's stopping COD from being labeled as that?

games with multiple ways to approach the game and story that simulate more real life systems with constant rules

That just describes every single RPG.
        Is Skyrim an immersive sim?

Yes but Baldur's Gate 3 is even more immersive sim than Skyrim

I'm asking how much freedom does there need to be in order for it to be classified as immersive sim?
            >you can be stealth bow
            >or brute two handed
            >or mage caster

              Anonymous

More freedom than different playstyles, but not enough freedom it enters Sim territory.

Usually mechanics under the hood that aren't tied to leveling Stata or perks.

Either way genres are just made up zeitgeists and this is the deus ex genre.

I think you're misunderstanding it. Immersive sim is not a genre but a design philosophy

While there are some games like Arx Fatalis that could categorically be called RPGs, RPGs usually have multiple scripted paths that each have their own conclusion and consequence whereas immersive sims concern themselves with having multiple unscripted paths with a single objective. In System Shock, that's to stop SHODAN, in Thief, it's to steal shit, and Deus Ex, to stop Bob Page.

Additionally, the way handling the same thing is usually different. In RPGs, you usually have a general option and occasionally a relevant skill that can be applied. Immersive sims do not have skill checks that would restrict you from pursuing your task in the way you want to.

rpgs allow for agency by simulating it w/ dice rolls
immersive sims have you actually doing what would otherwise be done via dice roll
and to allow this theres logic+ systems in the enviroment that you can take advantage of to progress in your own way. htakx

Ultimate is a Fantasy Dungeon Crawler RPG

System Shock is a Scifi Dungeon Crawler FPS(OG like Doom).

    Thief is a Stealth Game

    Dishonored is a Stealth Game

Deus Ex is an FPS with RPG/Stealth Elements

Bioshock is so bad that giving it a genre would be an insult to said genres

Immersive Sim is a madeup buzzword so pretentious hipsters can pretend they are vidya connoisseurs.

I know exactly what morons mean when they say imsim even more than they do. Because if they did then they would never use it as a genre. Design philosophy at best.

I've played every game mentioned in this thread so far except Ultima. You should go back to whatever other website you crawled out of.

I know exactly what idiots who use the tem imsim means, also what it actually means. And that it fundamentally has no meaning.

But since you are pretending I don't in the dumbest type of defection imaginable. Why don't you define it? So I can eviscerate you in the next post?
