I would argue that RNG is not enough to make a CYOA an RPG but I would argue that introducing player characteristics that effect the outcomes of choices does. Doesn't even need to be a traditional stat system.
>I would argue that introducing player characteristics that effect the outcomes of choices does
Not me.
There has to be another layer, where you have to make decisions based on those stats as part of a coherent rules-based gameplay system beyond mere skill checks that branch hand-written narratives.
This game has always looked good, maybe when I'm done with PoE games I'll give it a shot. I heard you can get past literally every combat with speech skills
Not exactly. If you go ahead with certain options, you will be forced into combat. If you have an option to run away or not go along with something, pick it.
Decided to try an IG board character.
i forgot how absolute fricking shit block is before the endgame where it's the only way to defend against the bullshit boss
>Block >Absolute fricking shit >You get a free +25 on block as a starting bonus i.e. 2 and a half Lvls worth of Skill Points. >This on top of the bonus against ranged shit >Absolute shit
No

Ah, the highlight of a shield game: full power armor
i get the wierdest boner
Well, uh, make sure to save before allocating a large amount of skill points. You might lock yourself out of some things or fail at certain options. If you want to know skill caps for the first town, it's 3-4. Charisma is pretty worthless if you're not going to talk. Intelligence gives an overall boost to skill gain. Strength boosts damage, but you can make do without it entirely if you plot your build around a dex weapon, specifically swords because bleed + poison is one hell of a deadly combo.
Blocking starts off with a higher chance of proccing but you'll have to wear armor to mitigate damage, which limits your defense abilities. Dodging starts weak but has the highest defensive capability thanks to avoiding damage altogether. Shield outdoes it in the endgame though thanks to the utter brokenness of power armor's forcefield
One thing I wonder about the sequel is if they'll ever revisit Earth or have other species worship the Elder Gods.
maybe there'll be an ending where you go back home and the entire planet ruled by your old player character after having ascended with Balthazaar's essence
AoD heavily involves skill/stats checks, which is atypical for the average VN, not to mention that the game can be quite combat heavy, depending on which route through the game you take.
They're a type of narrative, not a game.
Unless you're illiterate, in which case reading can be considered a challenge for you. But (you) are outside what it is. So, that's still a no.
Well, now that I've beaten the game twice with the best ending, I'm going to play through again with the double skill points mod. Maybe gonna even frick with my stats for shits and giggles.
I still like Imperial rome but legit got filtered by the combat, decided to go le dialogue checks and got bored by the savescumming, how to make a viable combat build?
I played with the suggested guard build the game gives you and managed to complete the game just fine without much difficulty. The only thing I did different was go for swords instead of axes.
Depends on what you mean by fricked in the ass
you can't see all stuff there is to see in one run period but you won't even come close to an autistic maximum power fantasy ending without a sperg guide
I just made a pure combat guy my first run and I got an ending where he basically got screwed because you can't be a dumb psychopath and expect a happy ending no matter how badass you are in personal combat, but I actually found it really satisfying anyway.
Everyone saying they aren't is lying. It's almost a sandbox in what you can do but because stat checks and unwinnable fights you have to go through everything in a specific way and always have stat points on standby for unexpected checks. You're so spread thin you can't even fight and do social you have to pick one or else it's even MORE of a tightrope you're walking. Fanboys will say otherwise, they have a steam guide up I guarantee you because they always know the "secret" shit.
you're just wrong and stupid bro. You can ironman a Commercium character in your first run, and a combat character can easily have a satisfying run doing several routes.
the only other possibility is that you tried to play a thief your first run, which is definitely the hardest path if you refuse to take one of the backdoors out of it to just be a combat character instead
*skill-check style assassin is also very painful for most of the same reasons, you get put in positions where if you miss a check you had no overwhelming reason to see coming you either are a combat character or you die

Nah. You simply can't handle a single negative outcome because you are clinically autistic, which is also the reason for why you are a NEET and a virgin.
Ye
No, if they were, they wouldn't be called visual novels or CYOA in the first place.
AoD is a weird one where it's stuck between both and has actual passable combat.
on my usual god run
yeah Disco Elysium sets pretty strong example
I don't know what it is. Just keeps pulling me back.
lol, no
No
They're more book than game, so no
Cyoa books (especially with rng) are the same tier as “rpg” video games. Neither are RPGs, but both attempt to imitate them
I would argue that RNG is not enough to make a CYOA an RPG but I would argue that introducing player characteristics that effect the outcomes of choices does. Doesn't even need to be a traditional stat system.

Rance, Daibanchou, Alchemy Meister and Bunny Black are all very solid RPGs despite primarily being VNs. So... Yes!
this fight always makes me feel like i'm on drugs
FRICKING YES
fricking archers didn't cheapshot kill my victory finally
I'm surprised they even let you do this fight

I'm pretty sure I can finish the game like this. Smithing and training are fricking broken.
>bodycount: 162
bawd.
what can i say, i make pussies bleed
Is the zombie rpg made by the same devs good?
Decided to try an IG board character.
i forgot how absolute fricking shit block is before the endgame where it's the only way to defend against the bullshit boss
also fricking hammergays denting my priceless fricking meteor armor
>the bullshit boss
just become god bro
i know
chip damage, man
fricking chip damage
>fricking chip damage
It's more predictable than dodge
Also I'm 99% sure the game uses pseudo-random distribution instead of full random which means that characters will hit more consistently.
This applies to dodge too.
I prefer dodge's full damage evade to be honest.
>Block

No
Why is this "game" here? Go to Wrong board
Are you brainless still discussing "le definition of RPG"
Fricking seriously?
What should I know going into this game?

also, invest at least one upgrade in alchemy
One thing I wonder about the sequel is if they'll ever revisit Earth or have other species worship the Elder Gods.

Anyone manage to beat agathoth without canister/bombs? I managed only with an assassin character by spamming arm/leg/torso attacks
Yeah. He's a pain in the ass that way.
and going for his kill locks you out of the best ending
Yes.
>throwing
your early game was hell, wasn't it?
Crafting is a must since you'll have to turn all the weapons you find into stuff to throw at people. But it actually worked better than I expected.
Oh no, you got 4 INT.
You can if you destroy Maadoran with sleeper
Pic unrelated?

Did you beat the "tutorial" fight?
Also specialize in a single weapon and defense skill (dodge xor block).
Put all your points there
Can I play this game without a guide and not get fricked in this ass? Or at the very least, with just a starting build I've looked up online

Lone wolf, grailquest, bloodsword, fabled lands and fighting fantasy are. most are not.
I really, really wish we got more games in this setting.
I come strapped with three crossbows and a dagger. Stroll into the obvious trap with a Boatman swagger.
