Yeah it's really surprising to me that this game got a sequel. It was a pretty boring game that had an okay story; except I really dislike meta stories and Alan Wake's was pretty hamfisted and uninteresting to me.
I played it... Twice. The gameplay was very repetitive and shallow but the story, setting and atmosphere were great, for my taste at least. Big time Twin Peaks, Stephen King, Twighlight zone vibes.
American Nightware was better gameplay wise, good bit of fun, but lacked the atmosphere that made the first enjoyable.
It can also be finished in a couple of evenings easily and is very forgiving for a game that's closer to survival horror than other genres. Something most people can have fun with for a while, finish it and forget it.
I wonder if making the second game an actual survival horror game is the right choice, games like that are uncommon today
I'm quietly optimistic but, as with every new release I'm not going to get excited I'll just wait til it drops and give it a look. Sick of being disappointed.
