He's literally the exact opposite of a hack or fraud. All he's guilty of is retiring from his book deal to make products he earns a better cut from. Yes, it's actually that simple. Dude's a living legend that prefers generational wealth for his family to making New York City publishing buttholes rich.

He's making 10x more off House of Dragons and the shitty "World of ASOIAF" encyclopedias than he ever made from his book deal, because he owns the IP rights to the world, but not the publishing rights to the main series or its direct adaptions.

        Sounds fricking based to me.

Hey guess what, Steven King published a lot of novels as well, but people know what they are from The Shining, IT, Pet Sematary, Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile. Hell you don't even need to read any of them, but they're so ingrained into the lexicon of the general mindset.

He's the guy responsible for everything interesting about Elden Ring's story. Fromsoft commissioned him to create the world and characters up to the end of the Shattering, and Fromsoft developed the game from there.

      That means he wrote:
      Marika and Radagon
Rennala, Ranni, Rykard, and the other one
Farum Azula and the Ancient Dragons

      >honestly thought this thread meant he was announcing Winds of Winter would be releasing soon and got a bit excited
I really believe that Martin is stuck at around 75% and not entirely because he's lazy. His process is just too imprecise for the story he wants to tell, his "gardener" style requires he eventually tie the shrubs together to make a coherent plot but he never planned for how.

        Anonymous

He isn't stuck, he quit and he did so years ago, likely around 2016 when he realized there was no way for him to complete the story in a satisfactory period of time. Anyone that has even speed-read through the series can tell that two volumes is an impossibly short time to finish the series, it would take at least 3 to 4 in order to bring the story to a satisfactory conclusion. The primary threat of the series hasn't even been INTRODUCED yet, let alone vanquished. He made a frickup by concluding Storm of Swords and instead of having a timeskip continuing right along. FFC and TDWD were both poorly-paced messes and when he stated that they were both originally supposed to be a single book it shows in the work.

Martin is an incredible writer, certainly one of the best in modern day and will go down as one of the greats. However he acquired his fame far too late into his life and he realizes it's not possible to finish his work and has decided to enjoy the twilight of his life. We will almost certainly never receive the answers to the questions we have and it's best to forget about the series and let the old fat bastard enjoy his time because there's a 0% chance it's ever completed.

          >will go down as one of the greats
not if he never finishes his series, he'll be remembered as a fat, lazy hack who's supposed magnum opus got a shitty TV series ending. He's effectively released 1 book in almost 25 years, FFC and TDWD were supposed to be a single book

Martin is a shit writer because he can't stop adding new pointless plotlines for the hell of it. No, we don't need 4 whole chapters of Quentyn Martell dicking around just to see the stupid fricker die without fanfare. No, we don't need to have 2 chapters of Arianne doubting Doran and uselessly trying over and over again to usurp him only for the Dornish status quo to stay the same. That shit could be done offpage. No, we don't need 7472828228 chapters of Arya doing her assassin training either. In fact why do Arya even need to become a super assassin at all? Her being an assasin wasn't in his original outline so it has never been necessary. No, why the frick do we have to introduce yet another apocalyptic threat in the form of Euron Greyjoy when we already have one in the form of the Others? The fricking plot keeps splitting off in a billion directions and going off on tangents. The fatman can't trim the fat for shit.

Because he's insecure. He also spent more than a few entries detailing the number of authors that never finished their final works. He's just trying to assure himself. This is why I generally no longer read an author's works unless they are finished. No reason to waste time on a plot that will never be completed.

Those who are great already have a clear idea on where to bring their characters. They make compromises and limit the scale to complete the story that is needed to be told.

Martin is a shit writer because he can't stop adding new pointless plotlines for the hell of it. No, we don't need 4 whole chapters of Quentyn Martell dicking around just to see the stupid fricker die without fanfare. what this guy said.

why does he spend his last days having imaginary arguments with Tolkien and Robert Jordan than finishing his series?

Because Tolkein was a very humble devoutly religious man who kept his opinions private and knew how to write a complex world but with a simple narrative with his books that anyone can enjoy from beginning to end. Even something like Dune, he only told a friend privately via a letter that he wasn't a fan of it and only long after his death did those written messages get released to the public by his estate.
GRRM got wiff of a lucrative offer and completely abandoned his series for trips to high end buffet lines on private cruises.

You think he had something to do with Ranni's writing? Lore wise she's pretty evil, murdering her stepbrother and inadvertently starting a terrible war of succession. By the time we meet her she's a tsundere doll that really just wants to help. It's like they were written by different teams.

I think Ranni is the character he wrote best. Her entire backstory and motivation can be boiled down to her trauma over Radagon leaving his family behind for Marika. It's possible she was betrothed to Godwyn. (Prince of Death, Princess of Caria) and that's why she killed him. This also explains her revulsion at the Two Fingers control.

She's like Sansa and Dany Targaryen rolled into one character.

ooc we know for a fact he wrote the Carians because Miyazaki has gone on record and said Rykard was his favorite character that George presented them with.
