GameCube discs should not deteriorate other than the labels on some releases for any reason other than misuse. Because of the way they were manufactured they should be robust and work even if mishandled

Yeah dude the format that was supposed to be a cheaper smaller alternative to to DVD(literally based on the same tech and created because panasonic was butthurt about having to share DVD revenue with the consortium) that was never actually tested in real market conditions is somehow more robust that the DVD that was printed in billions of discs a year. You realize this is panasonic we are talking here about? You know, the same dudes that butchered their version of the gamecube?

Nah. Always the possibility of a bad printing process. That said a lot of times bad discs come from being kept in bad environments and/or treated carelessly. That said, disc rot is not nearly as bad as people try to hype it up to be. All optical and magnetic media will fail, just as the flesh and bone will eventually grow old and die, but a bit of common sense will allow you to keep your games and hardware usable for decades more to come.

TBQH solid state electronics generally seem resistive to the flow of time. Sometimes caps blow out or power supplies fail but the actual PCB and its components? Pretty okay.

True, but it never hurts to say that all things will one day fail. Otherwise the thread will end up becoming a "rotting plastic" shitposters delight. If treated well, the general build quality of retro game consoles could have them working for up to a century from now, provided recapping at some point in the future. Probably longer then the optical and magnetic media designed for said consoles.

What bad GameCube discs are there? Some such as Twin Snakes are prone to label deterioration but these aren’t like PlayStation discs where the label protects the data. You can scratch off a GameCube disc label and still play it. GameCube games are protected by a non data layer on both sides, and no data is contained on the inner rings, so they can also be cracked and still play (as long as they still spin). Nobody has ever been able to give me one example of GameCube disc issues

I also want to preempt anyone giving examples of tiny “holes” being visible on discs when held up to light. If square shaped, these are for copy protection purposes and are intentional to the printing process. Compare a licensed game to an unlicensed disc such as an action replay or freeloader - those don’t have those “holes”

My GBP disc still works, even though the label has flaked off all over it.

My GameCube library is on an HDD plugged into a modded Wii, actually. But I used to work in game publishing and whenever this subject comes up, nobody knows what they are talking about.

Are you six years old? I never claimed to have worked on mario 64 or anything ridiculous.

Where did I ever say GameCube discs were superior in robustness to dvds? What have I claimed that you believe to be false? I described the composition of a GameCube disc accurately and nobody can dispute what I wrote because it is objective reality

What do you mean having cheetos on my fingers while I put my discs away will cause them to rot?
