      When I was a kid in middleschool my buddy gave me a bag of random Genesis titles, Dynamite Headdy was one of them. His dad got visually angry with him just gifting these to me-I don't know what his dad looked up on the internet but after that he was super nice to me. Like he sensed that my very own daddy would frequently hit mommy when nobody was around. That guy learned about modchips for PS1 and installed one on my friend's console. When they would burn an illegitimate copy of a game they'd give me the OG copy. They werre pretty cool.

    Hyperbole. Knuckles Chaotix is perfectly playable. It's just easy and not terribly interesting design-wise, but you could say the same thing about Kirby.

        i mean sure, the main character might be a little snarkier than say, mario, but he's hardly trying to be le mature games for mature gamers at least until the adventure games, but i don't wanna summon that autist so i'll just leave it at that

    i have a theory that the og idea for the game would be sonic reuniting with his old bandmates inspired by that sonic 1 concept art which would explain vector's near-identical appearance. you could see how the other three could've been redesigned as the current chaotix

      No, we know that it started out as a Sonic and Tails game for the Mega Drive, then they shifted over production to the 32X and decided to make it a spinoff without them since it was so different from regular Sonic games.

      At first, they decided to create Espio and try to make him a new video game star for the 32X (his chameleon color changes serving to flex the color capabilities of the console), joined by a bunch of oddball characters like Mighty from the arcade Sonic game (also serving as an easy recolor of the Sonic sprites they had already put work into), Vector from early concept art and Charmy from the obscure Japanese Sonic manga, but then they decided to capitalize on Knuckles' popularity after S3K and make him the star of the game.

    It's extremely playable if you take a whole 5 seconds to learn the controls.

    The levels however are trash that were not designed well for what they made.

      I think the level design is a lot better than Sonic CD and a lot of people seem toike that game. The levels in Chaotix are designed in a way to take advantage of the rope system, similar to how in CD they're designed to take advantage of the time travel mechanic.

        I never felt that way personally. I get the rope mechanics perfectly and really like it with the shit you can pull off, but the levels just dont feel like they do much to make use of the mechanics offered. The dude above who mentioned kirby is actually kinda on point, i don't think the levels in those games make good use of the moves you have.

        Like yeah there are mandatory sections where you need to use the abilities and i like shit like vectors air dash, but a lot of the time it feels like you are just cheesing the stage design rather then needing to figure out how to use your abilities to properly play them + speed focused sonic level design where probably a slower progression would have made for more interesting or something (though the rubberbanding to build up speed is fun)

    Knuckles' Choatix is an okay game. Bouncing around is kinda fun. The problem is that the level design is basically nothing, it's really empty and there's no real sense of escalation, hazards, enemies, or platforming.

      This, it's good to play for like a few levels but once the fun of the rubber band physics wears off it gets boring fast because every level is just a similar empty area you have to get to the end of with nothing to make it interesting. And then there's Amazing Arena which makes me want to rip my hair out

    It was really ahead of its time.
    It being too much work and space to create new level assets so now we've gotta come up with a way to recycle the same ones as much as possible is really more of a modern sonic issue than a classic one.

          the game's progression system was a little strange and unconventional.

          I'd like to see someone hack the game to have straightforward level progression.
          And better stage layouts.
          Maybe some better stage hazards and enemies.
          And get rid of the combi-ring.

          Oh for frick's sake Sega, just commission Whitehead to rebuild Chaotix from the ground up, shit's embarrassing.
          And then make Amy playable, lol.

            And Tails, for that matter. It's incredible how the only progress ever made on Chaotix hacking in decades is to replace Mighty's sprites with Sonic's. It seems like one should be able to put Tails' sprites from Crackers in Wechnia's spot and give him Charmy's flight abilities if restoring the ones for him from the prototype is too hard.

    I wish it had more time in the oven. Graphically it's beautiful, the soundtrack is amazing, I love the concept of a sanic platformer with the tether gimmick. But the stages are empty tech demos. They just needed more time to actually do something with the mechanics and make proper levels to suit them.

    Honestly, I didn’t have many issues with it, but I also played an absolute ton of Umihara Kawase so slingshot physics are second nature to me. I wonder if people have so many gripes because they are trying to play it like a traditional sonic title

    They should have made the rope mechanic optional. This was supposed to be the flagship 32x game and they turned a proven money printing formula into a painful slog.
