Why do so many ARPGs look the same Diablo 2 came out 23 years ago and devs still almost exclusivly go for that dark gritty sword and sorcery style form back then.
The only only games I can come up with is Torchlight and Lost Ark. Please post any games that you think break the norm.
Van Helsing comes to mind, I think Victor Vran also qualifies.
Still kinda in the same style imo, but yea I played I feel like these fall in the same category as Grim Dawn. Still dark and gritty but with a steampunk twist or in Van Helsings case vampires.
Titan Quest
+1
cool, never heard of this game. the combo counter is neat and are they drawing spells with the mouse?
Oh also Minecraft Dungeons. And if you want to stretch the genre boundaries slightly, you get to things like the FATE series, and others relegated to the PSP which are Dungeon Siege: Throne of Agony and Untold Legend: Brotherhood of the Blade. Their style could be compared more to Diablo 3, and the lack of grit could be a platform limitation but they are what they are. Not worth emulating at the end of the day.

Its a nice style and people like it. And its not to demanding to make either?
I think its more demanding than something like torchlight if we talk about the current standard of art assets in games.
Just got big update, Ill probably get it after I am don with the Diablo beta
>Minecraft Dungeons
oh yea forgot about that, do you know if its any good?
>do you know if its any good?
No idea, never bothered to try it but I figure it would be fairly casual, even moreso than Torchlight
Man i really want to play an ARPG, but i'm just instantly turned off when I realize the endgame is just spamming a single spell all the time, and your whole build revolving around a single spell, is there any ARPG that doesn't do this?
Titan Quest and Grim Dawn can let you have builds where you spam different spells all day every day.
Thanks bro, I'll try it out
Literally this is how I feel about Path of Exile.
are u moronic?
PoE in the last few years has been moving towards 2-3 button gameplay and CD based rotations
seems like your just shit
Unless that ARPG is path of exile, most will require you to use more than one ability.
Diablo 2 requires you to use more than one ability?
>plays necro
>use only teeth
depends on the build. Yeah Blizz sorc probably only uses Blizzard and teleport 95% of the time. But then you get stuff like jav/bowazon hybrid where you freezing arrow shit to CC, swap to javs to throw LF, use CS in melee, can mix in throwing decoys at shit, etc.
Definitely, unless you play your typical grindfest meta build. Try single player hell difficulty using only 1 or 2 skills. It's practically impossible.
That's good to hear, I guess I'm checking out D2
You should. Be aware monster elemental resistances increase exponentially and can go over 100%, which means they can become immune to certain elements, so it's always good to not focus on one single element after nightmare difficulty.
How do you counter them eventually, do you build some other elemental dmg on the side of your main one?
The most popular case is the sorceress because all her damage is elemental and each skill tree is one element. Typically you would pick two elemental skills as main damage, and some can be used at the same time. For example, meteor takes a few seconds to cast, but in the meantime you can throw in an ice orb. So you would use both as your main damage against every enemy. But because skills synergize, once you fight against a cold immune, you can switch to fireballs while you're waiting for your meteor to fall down.
There are more complex ways to counter immunities tho, you can equip your mercenary with an item that gives them a paladin aura which lowers enemy's resistances, for example. Necromancer has a curse that does the same thing as well. Maybe you find an item with charges to use that curse on other classes too. I'd say the best way to counter is just not focusing on one element.
What i was meaning to ask is doesn't buffing another dmg element weaken your main build? I'm sorry i never played D2, just trying to assess the situation
sounds like you are really wstupid and ignorant about ARPGs and youre only one youve ever played is fricking POE
ARPGs are not about spamming 1 skill for eternity
POE is a fricking awful arpg
ok
moron
t. doesnt play any ARPG because theyre all dead and is waiting for the next poe league to complain about
I went to the casino the other day to chill out, get drunk and play some blackjack and gamble away my savings. Got bored so I went to the slot machines and I found this gem (pic related)
Definitely gave me that endorphin rush that all addicts seek, but now my wrists are hurting
just dont play endgame
Last Epoch has more than one skill to offer.
this game looks so good. when is it gonna come out of early access?
>eats the same shit for years on end
>"what the frick you guiz why is my table full of shit?"
Every time something new comes out you dedicated shit-eaters blowtorch it to oblivion, never giving it a chance to grow outside of a dedicated following. And because you treat them all this way, ARPGs that are genuinely bad get lumped up with diamonds-in-the-rough thus magnifying the damage.
Screw you, goyim.
D3 literally looks like a early 2000s cartoon bro.
Play my game.
Why aren't there any sci-fi ARPGs with top-down shooter mechanics. Now that I think of it it seems like an obvious idea.
I was thinking about this, all I can come up with is Warhammer 40k: Inquisitor.
Does the ascent count?
I think it kinda does.
Very pretty and a good game, but get it cheap if you can
Dose it have items and RPG progression?
seems cool but the gameplay I watched they didn't have any.
there is a lot of armors and weapons, with rarity and can upgrade them and some player passiveskills to rank up to make weapons better and all that
Space Siege. It sucks.
There is an old ass game called Restricted Area, and Hellgate London. Wish they would get a reboot, or more sci-fi oriented aRPGs in general. So yeah, your options are limited.
Just take a look at the ARPGs that aren't diablo clones
>Lost Ark
Shitty MMO, same with D4.
Soma Bringer.
Titanquest, perhaps.
Warhammer 40k Inquisitor
boring as frick
still counts because diablo 2 is also boring
Would a call of duty ARPG work
Play real action rpgs instead of top down gay shit, Nioh 2 is on sale it even has Diablo loot you’re welcome
>moronic muh souls stamina
>use limit on anything fun that you have to grind ng+++ to alleviate
Go and stay go.
>moronic muh souls stamina
learn to ki-flux
Why are my only options for ARPGs Diablo clones and Souls clones? Frick this genre
Destiny, Borderlands, Shadow Warrior 2
Destiny is garbage, I've played BL1 and 2 already, and the Shadow Warrior games are fun but not what I'm looking for.
You're moronic, everyone has already played these, and 3 was garbage.
Where are good, new ARPGs?
>Shadow Warrior 2
that game was meh and the visual were complete garbage, I liked the first one with the linear campaign much more.
Because you're too moronic to look for other games.
>Has an elegant depth despite accessible mechanics/trees (meaningful skill interplay, build-enabling uniques, etc)
>can player a character to a reasonably concluded build simply by following the story path (with a completionism/explorer mindset) without stopping to grind/farm
>solo self found is reasonable without limiting build options
Does it exist?
Grim Dawn unironically.
>grim yawn
Grim Dawn's builds just didn't hit me right, somehow. Maybe it was the delayed constellation layer over top.
All they have to do is change the perspective to normal 3rd person instead of isometric and they revolutionize the musou genre.
Every ARPG tries to beat Path of Exile and ultimately fails because they try to listen to gamers who have no fricking clue what they are talking about. All these new ARPGs give you literally nothing to grind for
>Why do so many ARPGs look the same Diablo 2 came out 23 years ago
Because the genre has never evolveed past Diablo 2 and Diablo 2 is still the best game in this genre. And I say that with sadness in mind because I wish poop of exile, diablo3/4 or any of those other clones were better but they're not.
I've never finished the Grim Dawn campaign, furthest I got was level 50 and not even sure how far into the campaign I actually got. Never got to the Malmouth stuff but I heard it's really good. I'm gonna give it another shot. What is a fun melee build? Sword and board or two handed, no dual wield
you should be at the end of the vanilla campaign at that level. As for melee build I remember there is the krieg set which should be easy to farm.
and Diablo looks like Torchlight now, your point?
