It's okay to not like something.
I think it would be a better use of your time to find something that you do like instead of bringing people down because of your own opinions.

I really like Diablo 1 because it is slower and nails the spooky horror tone. Sure, you could play as a teleporting Black person if you want but most people played warrior and chopped their way down.

Same here bro. I wish they'd add a diablo mode to exanima. An option to do away with the die by the sword combat.

Funny, I just started playing D2 myself and feel the same way. I have to assume it'll get more interesting once I have more skills. I just wish it was less A and more RPG. I love the atmosphere though.

I think by and large the problem is companies copying Diablo ad infinitum for nearly 30 years.

What I really want is an ARPG that has a deep story and meaningful choices like a CRPG. Like a hybrid of Diablo and Planescape: Torment. Throw in some updated combat that adds some kind of mechanical complexity beyond "click to kill monster" and you're golden.

There is exactly 1 story choice in Grim Dawn and you can just pick the other one for the next difficulty.

        Anonymous

Played that. It is shit. Not only is there zero narrative complexity, the repetitive combat bored me to tears.

They don’t even need to be “click to kill a thousand mobs” you could have strategic elements like pausing the game to give commands to your party, or making a more souls like experience when it comes to combat, but selling Diablo clones is the quicker and easier thing for studios to do.

Yeah, studios shit out Diablo clones because they know that it's less financially risky to provide consoomer cattle with their familiar serving of slop than it is to try something a little more daring and innovative. This is why gaming in general and definitely the ARPG genre have been in decline for years. It's also why 1997-2005 was such a golden age of gaming, because genre boundaries weren't as solidified, the market wasn't as bloated, and studios had more creative freedom to work on innovative products like Planescape, Morrowind, Legacy of Kain, etc. I'm old enough to have played and loved D2 on its original release, but as far as I can tell the genre never went beyond that formula and has been in a state of moribund stagnation for the last 23 years.

so why not look for that in other genres instead of diablo clones where people who like loot and builds go for their fix. Jesus you people really are baffling sometimes. It's like here you have a genre that is exactly as advertised and you come in and what a completely different genre. Do you fricks also go listen to black metal bands and rant about how this would be so much better if it was country too? moronic c**ts

    >The loot lottery is kind of a system by which randomizers are generated. The best analogy is it's a slot machine. Every time you kill a monster you put a quarter into the slot machine and pull the lever and out could come nothing, you could get your quarter back, or you could hit a jackpot.
    >So if you could think of pulling the levers every time you kill a monster it's got kind of this addictive quality--just like slot machines are addictive, so is the 'I am going to maybe win something big here.

I dont know why they cant make a good ARPG with actual action that you control. Something with a tight moveset and combos relating to various weapons so you actually have to time and dodge and parry... Everything else exactly the same just some actual engaging gameplay. But then I guess the allure of these games is being able to basically just mong out and grind mobs for thousands of hours without having to actively pay much attention or try.

You don't want an ARPG, you want a 3D beat em up. Just play those instead.

Nah I want an isometric ARPG like diablo but with compelling combat and controls that are reflected heavily by your build choices and gear types. I'm sure that exists but that diablo setting and aesthetic with some tight, easy to pick up, hard to master gameplay would be sick.

They need to be more creative with this genre. The formula of maxing on hp/mp regenerating gear and spamming AoE attacks against mobs is very stale.

d2 is an amazing game but there's no way to know if you have the gene that allows you to put thousands of hours of grinding into it. you have to play it to find out.
the good news is that even if you don't have it, the game is still enjoyable until you get to hell.
