The PSN requirement can probably be removed if it was an offline game but in the future games will probably be made with that in mind. We're most likely going to see P2P options be removed completely from new releases so you're forced to play on official servers instead of connecting with 3 friends over local IP.

20/15 years ago you weren't in direct communication with the devs to the extent you are now. Also corporations didn't sink their teeth into the industry and suck it dry. Microsoft entering the console war signaled the beginning of the end and that was caused by Sony entering it and then having the PS2 become so wildly successful. Gaming died with the Sega Dreamcast, the generation after that was the PS3/360 gen where everything started to fall apart.
