That's just the difference in the male vs female power fantasy. You can also see it in Star Wars comparing Luke vs Rey, or a typical shonen anime vs a magical girl show like Sailor Moon.
Male protagonists generally start from nothing and fight to acquire power whereas female protagonist begin already having great power but failing to recognize it, or failing to be recognized by others.
There are exceptions, but in broad terms male protagonists usually have to claw their way to the top while female protagonists have to learn to recognize what was there all along
NTA, Shoujos also buffer the fact there's no real story if there's no real adversary by adding lots of romantic and social strife.
Liko is practically asexual and thus the major component that holds Shoujo together is absolutely absent. Character goals and battle autism aside, Horizons was progressing at good pace until it suddenly decided to stop. The last big development was in episodes 32-34 when they recruited Lapras, Rayquaza swept the floor with Amethio and Liko's grandma left the gang to deal with the Explorers offscreen. The latest five episodes have been almost pure filler and so is the next one. Dot obtained a new Pokémon and finally Liko escaped a situation (the Maushold story) without being bailed by Friede, but aside from that, there hasn't been any progress since the turn of the year.
It's a shame because I have really liked Horizons so far, I don't give a frick Liko and Roy aren't battle autists running behind gym badges. Aside from Friede's deus ex machina shenanigans I have enjoyed it. But for some reason the series stagnated overnight and that reeks of orders from the suits above.
This franchise is so horribly managed at all levels and the Ashnime also suffered from that

I don't get why Modern Pokemon writers do this. There's also a chance apparently that Roy could get the Dolphin which is based but then will the Dolphin be box in favor of the Croc as well? I love the Croc but it would be nice to see some more in terms of Liko and Roy's teams.
