Yes. Camera is controlled with R2 and L2. It’s horrible. It’s the PC version.

          Anonymous

Wew, what's this Kingdom Hearts 1-tier control scheme? The console version ties camera control to the analog like any sensible person would, and Brotherhood and onwards on PC do as well so I really don't know what were they thinking to do that. Parkour is very camera relative in old AC so that's got to majorly suck.
Have you looked around on Steam discussions to see if anyone has fixed that?

          Moose

          >Camera is controlled with R2 and L2.
No, it's not. What kind of weird cracked version do you have? I just downloaded AC2 with my UC account just to make sure. I'm even using a DualSense for this so it's not even a natively supported controller. Just enable the default settings for the controller and rebind the face buttons because they're wrong (It had grab where attack was for some reason) and it works fine. Don't touch the medicine/HB/Weapon/Fists though because it breaks the d-pad in menus kind of. It's why you see me delay going up a couple times, it rebound it to left for some reason. I'll have to double-check if not touching those fixes it.

You get to experiencing a decaying brotherhood instead of a rising one like AC1 or starting a new one like AC2.

I also remember the writing being pretty solid, the dialogue had its moments and most characters spoke properly instead of comical caricatures

  22. 9 months ago
    Anonymous

It was a step in the right direction in almost any regard. The new animations and parkour were a lot more fluid while at the same time retaining all the complexity of previous games. Combat was always piss easy since Brotherhood, so the fact they revamped it and gave it a bigger focus on cinematic slow mo was a good decision imo, even then, they managed to cramp a little bit of nuance into it (some enemies you have to stun before you combo kill, marksmen line up and try to shoot at you, you can't counter kill officers) though you can see that all of that fell off in IV where it was just counter kill anything without effort and with just dual swords now and uglier animations. I liked the slow prologue and transition into Connor but sadly it all fell apart into muh charles lee and participate in historic battles. Winter / Summer transition was kino. Homestead missions and the frontier were soulful in general. The setting itself was dull compared to Rome and Constantinople, but you can see there's a lot of detail in New York and Boston, especially when it comes to sound/ambient design, walk through the New York in Rogue and you'll see how lifeless it feels. Overall this feels like a very polished game and one of the only complete ACs there's simply so much to do and almost everything is just as well fleshed out. You can tell this game spent years in development while most other ones before it and after only months.

Glad to see someone recognizing how fluid the animations were. pretty crazy to see the jump from Revelations to 3 in the same console generation

Rogue would have been one of the greatest games in the series if it was given a full team and allowed to be fleshed out further.
I don't care if they were filler missions, I just wanted wanted everything to be bigger.

    Setting was cool.

Haytham and Connor were both cool.

Homestead and hunting in the Frontier are peak comfy.

    The naval missions were cool.

The optional objectives were NOT cool.

Having to manually reveal most of the map because sync points didn't do it for you is AWFUL.

Combat was good. Connor's animations were sick, and there was actually weapon variety unlike ACIV.

  24. 9 months ago
    Anonymous

Why do you keep making this thread?
The parkour is bland because of the setting, the stealth is undercooked, using a weapon other than the tomahawk is silly because Connor was designed specifically around using it and as such sword and dagger will recycle animations from it.
Haytham was more interesting and the game suffers from hiding Ratonhnhaké:ton's more personable qualities behind a Homestead many won't engage with. Rope darts are rad, though

      Anonymous

      >using a weapon other than the tomahawk is silly because Connor was designed specifically around using it and as such sword and dagger will recycle animations from it.
Only the dagger does, sword has its own set of animations completely different from the ones Haytham uses

        Anonymous

Sword does have its own animation set but it still shares anims with the tomahawk, some of the parries and the attacks where Connor hacks with the middle of the blade are very obviously taken from it. It is just a shame that there's a standard set by how pure quality the tomahawk choreography is, vicious and intricate, that isn't quite maintained throughout. I do love how Connor will pace around when left idle in combat with a heavy weapon, lad's built like a wall and it feels right.

The fact that you don't get any cool outfit to showcase Connor's Native American heritage beyond the Kanienkehaka clothes from when he was a kid is disappointing. The DLC outfit is perfect but the game doesn't let you use it in the main campaign. It almost feels as if that side of him slowly gets erased as he spends more time in the colonists' world and that's sad.

I'd be inclined to agree if it weren't how conveniently he's placed in history. He was basically a gift to oda nubunaga from Jesuit missionaries, he was present for several historical events, escapes nobunagas execution, and met several major players in sengoku japan. The ass creed games need someone who is historically present but not noteworthy enough that they don't have narrative flexibility. I HATE to admit it, because it reeks of tokenism, especially when there's other historical figures that fit that description from the same time period, but his outsider position and privilege in that time period makes him damn near ideal. When you consider that the assassins originated from outside of a closed off ethnostate it makes sense that our main character wouldn't be Japanese. What doesn't make sense, is that he's an assassin when Jesuits and nobunaga were NOT the good guys. The climax of the game should be you chasing nobunaga into the burning castle and cornering him for his seppeku.

I bought the game because the trailer (coming home) was cool. I remember very little about the game, but it always annoyed me that you had to play as not even the assassin for a chunk of the game, before you could play as connor (?). A massive disappointment. After Venice, Rome, and Constantinople, you get...trees, bushes, snow and houses that look like the one my grandparents live in. And the dumbest, most convoluted story in the series so far. The intro with Haytham was awesome, but holy shit did they drop the ball with the main game. Bonus points for killing off Desmond. Loved it, it was one of the first games I pirated and being my only AC after Brotherhood, I played the frick out of it. I found Connor charming, the combat really satisfying and the setting cool enough, despite usually hating Americanized things. I recently played Tyranny of King Washington and realized the controls are kinda clunky, but I still love the setting and I think it got undeserved flak, specially with everything it introduced and with Black Flag being so beloved, despite only changing the setting and bloating the map even more (I like Freedom Cry way more).

It was fine gameplay wise, some changes to earlier entries but nothing crazy.
Narratively it was weak though. Connor has barely any agency of his own and it felt like just going through civil war set piece to civil war set piece which just sorta happen around Connor.

    pros
    >ship combat and wind and stormy weather, they tightened the controls in 4 but removed the variety
    >tree climbing and vaulting/sliding as well as the original AC climbing add even greater depth to an already deep system
    >snow and weather being comfy
    >combat actually a challenge in AC again thanks to sheer numbers, aka exactly what an assassins greatest weakness would be
on this, running around on the floor like a moron is near-garaunteed death thanks to rifle squads, so taking to the roofs is actually required which is nice for an AC game
    >working windmill you can climb and be moronic on
    >only redeeming part of the story was exploring how templars and assassins are two sides of the same coin and in alot of cases their goals are ultimately aligned

    cons
    >unhinged story in both the present day and the past
    >connor, while not being quite as bad as people meme, is pretty uneventful as a protag. can you even name 1 life event that happened to him? compared to ezio, who we know everything
    >uneventful story missions, TAIL, EAVESDROP, CHASE
    >anything that isnt in a big city is copy-paste, even down to the same 5 trees everywhere (because they have to be climbable)

i could pad out both sides more if it wasnt literally decades later. bottom line is that alot of people got filtered by the combat of this game, despite it being the best AC combat to date. is there a greater feeling than chaining attacks mixed with body blocking against bullet storms back to back to back?

I liked the addition of some more wilderness and wildlife and that's about it. They did something to slow down the combat in this one, and I guess colonial American cities just weren't much fun to climb on.

I liked playing as Haytham WAY more than Conner and I wish the game would have just followed his story and detailed the rise of the Templar order in the colonies during and after the 7 years war.
The world was boring, I didn't like how little there was to do in the frontier, some more activities like fishing and card games might have helped spice the world up a bit. I know you had the old board games like morris but it really needed something shorter that you could just pick and play whenever you were bored.
I liked building up the homestead but if I remember correctly it was very linear and certain hidden requirements had to be met before you could make any further progress.
All in all a solid 5/10, could have been better.

          >worse faces
          >worse facial animations
          >worse ship crew animations (they don't walk around or climb up or down the nets or mast)
          >worse ship animations (in AC3 you can see the side booms get positioned to use the stun'sl when Connor calls for full sail, as well as the crew moving faster when giving commands, whereas in AC4 sails magically elongate or shorten while the crew does nothing)
          >pointless story that leads nowhere and is only well remembered because of melancholic ending
          >worse combat animations and sound design ( you can't tell wtf Edward is doing whenever he's using the dual swords, most of the time he just slashed someone in the back while some out of sync poorly recorded audio plays)
          >worse combat variety (you can't equip any weapon but the dual swords, even though the animations for them exist when you take them from enemies)
          >worse and unnecessarily much easier combat
          >3 small cities, 2 of them are 75% grassy hills
          >worse audio in general (random awkward silences without music or sound effects all the time)
          >worse hunting
          >beginning of the pointless modern day plot era
Graphics and music are great, the game was great fun, but it's obvious to anyone that played AC3 that this is nothing more than a rushed asset flip, one that turned out better than it had the right to do, but the lack of polish is apparent in all aspects

It's my favorite AC after 2 and Rogue.

Connor isn't very likeable and not a true Assassin (just like Edward) but the setting was interesting and Haytham was based as frick.

Strong start that gets progressively worse once you gain control of Connor, peaks at the teamup, and then crashes to the ground after that.
The Homestead is the best part of the game because Connor is an actual person in it whereas in the main story he's a complete butthole even to people he's helping or a man who raised him for more than half of his life.
The Templars act nonsensically just to justify Connor hating them and it brings the story down because it's the main reason why Connor does anything.
The ship combat is the best of the series and every game that came after it did it worse because it made it much more arcadey.
The Frontier is okay and I didn't mind it.
The shipping system is cancer, especially when you have to physically go out and defend it if you're unlucky enough to be in the Frontier when you're sending one out.
Despite the Illuminati tunnels being monotonous they were also an interesting idea and pretty cool to explore.
The DLC was boring and exhausting despite having magical powers.

It's really not that bad. It all boils down to sending ten bear asses across the Caribbean for free money.

Beaver pelts make the most money overall so you're shipping them more than anything else, then the bear pelts.

What the frick does "non meme" mean?

I thought the story was horribly paced, the protagonist was unlikeable, the setting didn't allow for interesting freerunning, the gameplay was streamlined into moronic "hold x to let the game play itself" shit, it just wasn't good. I did not have fun.

I tried playing it. I didn't get far because the animations bothered me. They made those adaptive procedural animations, and just running and/or taking a turn made it look like the character was tripping and stumbling all the time. It made me uncomfortable, as if I'm subjecting the characters to such trouble, and I stopped playing about when it turned out the British dude was a bad guy, which I'm told is before the Indian character is even born.
In essence, the cool new animation technology took me out of it.

I'm going through all AC games now and I have finished this one last week.
I liked gameplay more than in previous games, more moves, weapons, gadgets, cool finishers, guns etc. Tomahawks are very cool
Most locations suck hard, colonial towns and forts can't compare to some of the most famous cities in the world filled with famous landmarks from AC2. Captain Kidd's missions had cool locations though
Growing Homested was more fun than buying shops in previous games
I didn't care much for Connor, he wasn't annoying or dumb, but after finishing the game I can't say that I would like to play as him again. Lost family/home as a child - trained under old man and went on the quest for revenge, all standard stuff.
Not really a fan of that particular history period or USA all together, so I can't say anything about that
Plot twist at the end of Haytham's part was the peak of the story, I didn't get engaged much after.
    Haytham was cool.
Going to play DLC and Liberation now

      Forgot two things
Crafting and caravans seemed kinda pointless, dunno why they made entire system with dependencies on multiple artisians and tiers, when the only reason to craft shit was to get items for few delivery quests and maybe couple weapons
Naval missions were actually kinda fun, unless you wanted to beat secondary objectives. The Giant and the Storm was one of the most frustrating things to get done in video games I did in a while. I guess that Black Flag will have more of those, so I'm not entirely looking forward to that

Do you just jump at the next game when you're done or do you take a break(burnout isn't nice)?

In steam version. you can't actually acces some stuff in AC2 and Brotherhood now, like Auditore Crypt, Da Vinci Disappearance and bonus slots for ammo. Thankfully, you can unlock that, if you download a save which was made when all of that was still avaiable, I got saves for both games from steam forums.

        Forgot about second question
        >Do you just jump at the next game when you're done or do you take a break(burnout isn't nice)?
I try to not binge play/watch stuff, so after finishing one AC game I go play something else and repeat. I'm in the process of going through all my backlog, I haven't bought any games since last winter sale and I won't buy any until I finish every single game I have. I don't have that many of them (less than 100 titles), but I have a job, so it takes a lot of time

        Moose

Not him but I did 100% runs in everything from 2 to Odyssey in a row with no breaks including the Chronicles games when I got my Xbone X a couple years back. Only games I didn't do were 1 because I did a 100% run a few months back, Bloodlines because I don't want to go through that again, Altair's Chronicles because it's a bad game, and Discovery because I don't care for it. Valhalla was out but it wasn't on sale yet so I didn't buy it at the time.

You really REALLY gotta be in a mood for it because when I reached Syndicate I started getting the "I don't think I really want to do this" feeling which went away about half way through the game, then came back for the Last of the Maharajah, then went away again with Jack the Ripper. Origins rekindled my passion for the series, and then I was hating Odyssey from the moment I started it.

It only got worse the longer I played Odyssey because it was the antithesis of what an AC game should be and wasn't even that great for virtual tourism because there was so much repetition in the world. I got a second wind when I got my 100% crit set going because it finally played somewhat like an AC game again and only hated playing it when I was given choices or had to use the Adrestia because the ship battles in Odyssey are by far the worst part of it by far. Then I got back into the Groove with the DLC, both were fine though DLC 2 of Legacy of the First Blade was pure filler and gave you a weapon even worse than the oil slick in Rogue.

My recommendation if you are going to do 100%s in a row:
Have something to watch. I was watching TV shows, Youtube, and listening to music whenever I was doing the checkmarks and collectibles, tuning in and out and enjoying both sides at the same time. It really helps with some of the monotony. It's honestly one of my favorite things to do with collectibles in open world games.

I really wish Syndicate’s main could’ve had the same vibe as the Jack the Ripper DLC, or that they went with the original Victory proposal that got scrapped after Unity’s initial reaction according to Jacob’s voice actor.

Connor's movements, parkour, and combat are so well animated. It's crazy playing a modern AC game and they just stopped caring and everything looks so jerky and cartoonish. And the cutscenes, minus modern day stuff and remaster, are really good. It also has one of the best winter themes in any game. >Has the worst tombs in the series by a significant mile, and the only thing that differentiates each snake maze is if it has a bottom floor that's flooded or not.
      >Is filled with so much collectible bloat it took Valhalla multiple patches and DLC spread across something like two years before it surpassed it with the base game alone being more bloated than Unity, a game criticized for its item bloat.
      >Builds should never exist in an AC game, but the fact that Assassin builds are outright required just to kill more than basic mooks, and 100% crit builds are required to assassinate everything without consuming Adrenaline and kill mercenaries is moronic.
Don't even get me started on the completely worthless bow unless you specifically spec into Hunter (Which is almost worthless in combat because it relies on Adrenaline for skills that do all its damage) or 100% crit.
      >Alex/Kass are easily at the top of "Worst MC in the series" because they flip what they believe in at complete random, act like buttholes to their friends for no reason, take moral high grounds while being fine with murdering innocents, and are absolute hypocrites during the main story.

The problem is that unless you do it the Unity way or the Valhalla way it's complete garbage because it locks you out of multiple tools you can use in gameplay. AC is about being a generalist, a jack-of-all-trades. Odyssey took that and smashed it into the ground unless you're playing a 100% crit run. The bow is literally on your back all game and does next to no damage unless you run one or two builds.

I'm with the other guy on this. While I definitely don't want RPG crap I do think specialisation would be an interesting twist on the formula, if only because it feels like the only feasible way to have an Assassin's Creed where I can play as a squishy sneakster that relies on being underhanded to get past enemies.
I'd think an evolution of Liberation's personas could be interesting but limiting your movement ends up meaning that any persona that can't free run is just not fun to play.

Yeah, Syndicate follows on Unity's gear system where certain belts gave you more ammo for specific tools and all that. Tbh AC in general could benefit a lot from taking inspiration from Hitman, there's a reason the assassinations from Unity are remembered so much

Yeah Unity introduced loot autism into the series for better or worse. Shit I think I need to replay Syndicate, there was a mission that let you infiltrate a place by posing as a corpse, that one really stuck with me.

It didn't introduce anything other than "tiered" enemies.
Besides how you can swap armor and weapon on the fly, the way gear works in Unity is not different from Ass Creed 2~4.
Ass Creed 2 added the concept of various tiered equipment to begin with.

Outfits were what gave you bonuses. Jacob’s belts and Evie’s capes just increased your defense and stealth stats, with the belts focusing more around defense while the capes were focused more around stealth.

should never exist in an AC game
This is what I fault AC Unity the most for opening the doors for. That shit made sense in co-op missions if you wanted to approach them differently, but in a singleplayer games it makes no goddamn sense.

          Anonymous

          Unity barely has any builds.
Being able to carry more ammo(belts, gauntlet substats) or making you slightly more quiet(torso and legs) when running doesn't fundamentally change how you play at all. Especially when you can just magically spawn ammo and spam smoke bombs.
          >in co-op missions if you wanted to approach them differently
Heist missions in particular forces stealth for the best returns, even for the other missions Unity's system/balance doesn't allow them in the slightest.
Kitting out in legendary medieval armor to "tank" for example will just make you survive like 1 to 2 hits more.
Being a "sniper" is a lost cause when you have about the same pathetic range as the enemy regardless of whether you're using a rifle or a handgun+melee.
Being the "healer" or a "recon" is borderline worthless.
There are like a handful of moments where the disguise ability is borderline mandatory but even that can be overcome by bruteforcing with stealth.

      >standard soldier
      >knife dude
      >captain
and you simply respond accordingly to each one; the grenadier can't be parried and auto killed, you have to trip him first and stab him while he's on the ground; the standard soldier can just be killed in any way and doesn't have any special requirements; knife dude will slash at you and avoid your attempts to grab him; you have to disarm him of the knife then you can kill him; captain has a gun and will attempt to shoot you from afar. if he's got a battalion nearby, they'll all take position and fire at you like a firing squad. you can disarm the captain and pretty much kill him in the same way you would a knife dude or you can trip him up like the grenadier and kill him while he's on the ground. as for the firing squad itself, it will do tremendous damage, but you have to avoid that shit by grabbing a body and using it as a meat shield or by parkouring out of sight.

it was often compared to batman arkham combat, but honestly that shit is slightly more complex because it at least throws multiple enemies at you at once and you have to sort of juggle them. in asscreed, everyone just waits in line to be slaughtered like good little NPCs. come to think of it, I suppose it's a step up from previous asscreed games, so by asscreed standards the combat is good.

AC3 also added the ability for enemies to attack two at a time, which translates into a counter that will kill both of them regardless of type.

pls tell me that's at least animated

I get that they literally copypasted his model from AC1 for the Ezio games but seeing that dagger sheathe be always empty irked me to no end. Either remove it or put his short blade in there as a prop.

No, they're not. It's literally a (You) issue, you can see

I'll have to double-check if not touching those fixes it.

me showing you it works fine on PC. Either your controller is busted or you didn't set it up at all.

I have a wired Xbox controller. I googled it and tons of people have the exact same issue. I can't even properly set the buttons up in the mapping because it won't recognize RT/LT

          Moose

I have a wired 360 controller and an Xbone controller which I also use wired on my PC. I genuinely have no idea how you are having this issue, are you sure Steam isn't causing it?

          >Builds should never exist in an AC game
I'm with the other guy on this. While I definitely don't want RPG crap I do think specialisation would be an interesting twist on the formula, if only because it feels like the only feasible way to have an Assassin's Creed where I can play as a squishy sneakster that relies on being underhanded to get past enemies.
I'd think an evolution of Liberation's personas could be interesting but limiting your movement ends up meaning that any persona that can't free run is just not fun to play.

Like I said, Unity or Valhalla's way of doing it is fine with specializations into Eagle Vision duration or extra tools for example. Odyssey's locking off of entire gameplay styles was moronic when that's a huge chunk of your moveset just vanishing into thin air.

Yes. Camera is controlled with R2 and L2. It’s horrible. It’s the PC version.

I remember having this problem a while back, I was using an og xbone controller and the issue boils down to some inconsistencies in the axis being assigned to the triggers. Some old xinput drivers would assign both triggers to the same axis basically preventing you from pressing them both at the same time. You have to use x360ce to fix this, it was a while ago but I remember you could just download a present specifically made to fix this issue in this game (and AC1) since enough people were having it, but yes, you're supposed move the camera using the right analog.

Connor is unironically more interesting than young Ezio; I really like how thoughtful and formal he is

People calling him boring are just midwits - just because he isn't flamboyant or extroverted doesn't make him boring - he's actually a great character for an Assassin who you'd think would be quiet and understated - unlike Ezio who everyone would remember after one conversation with him

China gets fricked over again with a shitty mobile game. What’s worse is that the main character is the adopted child of Wei Yu, the Chinese Assassin mentioned in AC2 that killed the first Chinese Emperor with his spear. They honestly decided that it’d be a good idea to make a mobile spinoff of some literally who instead of making a full game of Wei Yu.

it marked the beginning of the decline of AC. AC2 was an improvement over AC1 (gameplay-wise) and ACBrotherhood can be seen as a small improvement over AC2. AC3 was an obvious downgrade and the series never recovered.

last game of the series i played. the worst game ive ever played. has 5 chapters where you play ay haytham then with connor you start another tutorial. half the game seemed a fricking tutorial. boring parkour that was downgraded and the location didn't help either. going from renaissance italy or Constantinople to early days America is insane. all building are copycats and no complexity to them. same gameplay that wasnt improved upon even with new engine. the main protagonist is a literal cuck: he learns that it was Washington that gave the order to burn his village and yet connor still helps them. instead of training or making alliances with other tribes, he chooses to "help the lesser evil". it could've been a tragic story of a racemixed Black person trying to save his land but in the end fails. no we get some garbage story instead. dont get me even started with desmonds plot, what an absolute joke. ubisoft is lucky that morons kept and still keep buying asscrewd games after ac3. was a great series with incredible atmosphere, amazing locations and soundtrack with, yes i admit, a very simplistic gameplay but the games had a certain charm to them. the conspiracy about modern abstergo was incredible too, especially when deciphering the glyphs you would find around the maps. with ac3 and afterwards it became far cry but with assassins, well not even assassins recently
