Now, let's be clear, having 200K tris isn't necessarily a bad thing or even performant heavy for modern cards, but it's still a sandwich which is a relatively simple object with way too little optimization done. They were just relying on everyone else involved in the supply chain to do all the work, which is an apt description of Bethesda games.
