Time has done nothing but redeem B/W. The Region Lock is still one of the best things Masuda's done, the plot and characters are engaging with a fair amount of meta and subtext, the battles are absolutely snappy and teambuilding is a dream. The only downside is the death of online and the Dream World.
Back in the day /vp/ fricking hated that game, just like it does every new game release.
The reason it likes it now is because the toddlers that grew up with it are now old enough to be on Ganker
People hated gen 5 when it came out; you're living in denial or are unaware of the community around that era.
Somewhat related: B2W2 >>> B1W1. I really can't think of a single thing they do better than the sequels. >inb4 Muh story!!
If you're playing Pokemon for the story, may I suggest you try...any other RPG? Itd an ok story in terms of Pokemon, but thats saying the turd with a cherry was best.
But then it doesn't work as a sequel.
BW just has better protagonists. I was challenged to find a single (1) thing that BW did better.
And it's right there before you even start the game.
It's not just a part of the established mechanics, megas are its own side thing with their own rules. Just like Z-Moves, Dynamax, Tera, and any future gimmick that will be arbitrarily limited to activating once per battle.

Like items?

I can only use one item per battle?

Yeah, pretty frequently.

Really? So if one Pokemon makes use of an item, nothing else in my party can?

You brought up z crystals and megas on your own. Why do you want me to repeat it?

But those aren't items in the same way something like gems are. They have their own manual activation in a menu completely independent of anything else. And using a gem doesn't disable the rest of my party from using Leftovers.

I'm not even reading the rest of your cope.
>first game to take place out of poke-japan >no poke-japanese mons, only Unovan mons (at first)
kind of made it feel like I playing pokemon for the first time. These games are the best since GSC for me, and have yet to be topped.
Pokémon went south with Gen 4 after Gen 3 rose the bar too high. Gen 5 was mediocre as a Pokémon game, but great as a reboot to he series. Gen 6 was the true beginning of the end with the introduction of gimmick mechanics and the fact it was based in France, that is unless you take into consideration the heavy Black person couture in Gen 5, which is a given as America is globohomo. Gen 7 introduced blatant Pedophilia, Gen 8 introduced curry Black folk, and Gen 9 solidified the end with its homoeroticism and troony shit.
tl;dr
Pokémon stopped being Pokémon around Gen 4 because Black person worship

>Does it still hold up?
It never did
Every problem with modern Pokemon can be traced back to BW1.
RS, actually.
RG, actually.
IRL bug collecting, actually.
*BW1 and XY
s'okay.

>Does it still hold up?
Yeah there's still about 4500 cutscenes and lines of text to get through before route 2.

my argument
>Claims to have a counter argument
>Posts inferior girl
Huh?
Just play a BW2 hack that replaces the player characters with those from the first set of games.
But then it doesn't work as a sequel.

no
it has every problem XY has except worse but people give it a pass because
>OMG THEY REPLACED ALL THE OLD POKEMON WITH CARTOON NETWORK RESKINS!
>it has every problem XY has except worse
it doesn't have fairy type though
Yeah, you’re right, Dragon type is unbalanced in Gen 5, one of the reasons it’s worse than XY.
> Added abilities aren't a gimmick,
Ok then added form changes aren’t a gimmick
>it’s just a mechanic
Ok then added form changes are just a mechanic
Dragon was unbalanced since Gen 1.
fairy is just the new dragon
Megas being only once per battle is exactly what a gimmick entails. You're artificially capped to choosing just a single party member to mega evolve.
>Megas being only once per battle is exactly what a gimmick entails.
How do you morons come to these conclusions?
It's not just a part of the established mechanics, megas are its own side thing with their own rules. Just like Z-Moves, Dynamax, Tera, and any future gimmick that will be arbitrarily limited to activating once per battle.

Focus Sash is only once per battle. I guess the Focus Sash is a gimmick now.
No it isn't. My entire team can hold a Focus Sash.
No it can’t.
Of course it can.
Then why does the game stop me from doing it?
It doesn't.
It does.
Prove it.

If every person like you killed themselves this board would improve dramatically.
>Gen 3 rose the bar
>Gen 3
>Known for removing more features than it added
bait
Day night sucked and only friendless losers liked it.
>Gen 6 was the true beginning of the end with the introduction of gimmick mechanics
How are megas any more of a gimmick mechanic than HAs or gems?
Added abilities aren't a gimmick, and gems are just a mechanic. Are you going to call choice items gimmicks too?
>are you going to call one of the first gimmicks added to the series a gimmick too
????
Half the pokemon have awful designs.
Everything else about gen 5 is great.
This board is full of underages and shitposters that dont know this board's creation was in response to how popular gen 5 was.
It was in response to how obnoxious unovatards are.
