Frick no anon, the closest thing to modern FEAR, Trepang 2, just feels like Unreal slop in comparison. You can see it and feel it while playing. The version of Lithtech that powers FEAR feels like it was made from the ground up to recreate the lobby scene from the Matrix.
A separate problem that few want to face is that modern popular culture might be the limiting factor here. The culture we as westerners have come from for 20 years simply doesn't make the kind of people who are even capable of the killer shit that was spearheaded by Gen Xers like Carmack and Romero. Modern devs of all levels generally (not all, but generally) don't have the right stuff because they were born in a time that punishes the right stuff constantly.

Game developers all "crunched" back then because they were passionate about the games they were making. It was part of the lifestyle. All the best games of all time were made by people who slept at their office and worked unreasonable hours just because they wanted the game to be amazing.

The PC gaming dev scene was on the scale of what would be considered indie today. Everyone was working just to be the best in a highly competitive but still niche market. There wasn't some corporate CEO with no clue about video games working them like a slave, they chose to work that hard.

i think video games industry at that point all worked under publishers forcing them to finish their product within a reasonable timeframe tbh. they're a necessary evil so shit like daikatana doesn't happen with a dev time of like 10 years and shit

There's definitely people who crunch because passion but it's a psuedo-crunch. It's THEIR choice, the guy who reinvented the swinging system for a licensed Spider-man game after being told "frick off nobody cares" in his own time after hours, had passion. Some guy being forced to speckle horse dicks in red dead 2 for 20 extra hours a week or he won't have a job once the game wraps, isn't the same.

I'm personally not opposed to crunch time as a concept. But crunch time should be about a handful of devs squeezing in a feature they really want, not a company-wide death march with the end goal of maybe eventually shipping the game.
Especially now that AAA games are such a big black hole of both time and money.

While reading Masters of Doom, I got the sense it was an inevitable outcome of making Romero the public face of the company for marketing purposes. That kind of role probably would've led to anyone slacking on their responsibilities and it happened to be the most talented designer whose loss can be felt immediately in the soulless wastes of Quake II.
I still want to read Romero's own book that came out last year.

I have Masters of Doom too. It's a really fun read, and it's kind of a time capsule for the industry in the mid-late 90s.
The whole story of Ion Storm alone is fascinating. You've got these overenthusiastic young devs getting handed the keys to the kingdom, setting their sights too high, and crashing and burning. If Ganker existed back then, you just know Daikatana would be an eternal meme like Loss.
But the tragic part of it is that, for a brief moment, game devs were seen like rock stars, the cool new kids on the block behind a budding new art form. Now, we only hear about game devs when they're getting laid off, put through crunch time, or caught in a scandal. A shame.

One of the big changes about "game development then vs now" that back in the day most game had revenue splitting, so if the team made a super successful game, they got payed more. Now a day that is pretty much unheard of outside of small friend group indie teams, so the average ame dev today will crunch, will get payed shit with no bonuses, and will get laid off if the game doesn't sell billions.

Average testosterone levels have been declining ever since we started measuring them. There are a number of possible reasons and it's likely a combination of them. For one, I think the widespread use of plastics leeching endocrine system disrupting chems into our food, water, and general environments is a top contributor to the matter. That meme "they're turning the frickin frogs gay!" is kinda true, except it was turning the frogs into trannies, and the primary culprit is atrazine, a pesticide that has contaminated almost every modern waterway and gets into our food as well.

It's been said before but this has essentially been the case for all popular media.
In games you've seen discourse of the diminishing AA market. Relatively niche genres absolutely would not get exposure like they used to. If the games market was in the 90s like it is today, Silent Hill, Thief, MGS, Resident Evil, etc would only see the light of day if they were so radically altered as to appeal to as wide a demographic as possible. Example among the "good" modern games is the nu-Hitman trilogy. I/O is trying to be AAA now while putting all their eggs in the Hitman basket unlike in the 2000s, and that means that nearly all uniquely offensive content is out. That means no Catholic themes, no drugs any harder than party shit portrayed with kids' gloves, no gore or really any visceral violence, no sex or semi-nudity anywhere, no inflammatory iconography like Confederate flags. This sanding off of any and all edges even extends to the writing, where Agent 47 is more human and emotional than he's ever been, which is an overtly amoral terminator.

Don't get it twisted, there was still a lot of shady business dealings and politics back then. Like early Hollywood they were trying to figure out what exactly this new form of media is. Now it's more in grained, certain practices are set in stone now. You could even go to school for game development now. Very similar to the film industry so it's best to compare the two.

The film industry represtend the television and they exist side by side. Video Games represents the future transhumanist all in one virtual reality simulation media form they are trying to make. The industry is only doing good now because projects like the Metaverse bombed, but when they eventually become successful the vg industry will start hurting like how it did to the film Industry. And that new form of all pervasive transhumanist virtual media entertainment will replace video games proper eventually. Everything now irl is gamified with points/tokens/scores/virtual avatars etc., so you could say they have always been grooming us for this Transhumanist future for awhile.

I was also going to mention Adrian but I don’t really know his story outside of him being a sick ass art designer.

But then again two most prominent people in the company had that name. Romero and Carmack. And then there was this other Carmack that was unrelated to the chief big dick Carmack.

if a troon ruined your life why would you go that route instead of murder and/or suicide?

This still happens but only for small indie games that go under the radar and don't get famous since they don't generate publicity by putting Black folk and ugly dykes into every role

It wasn't quite as light-hearted as you make it seem but I'm sure the good times at id were a lot more fun than the good times at some triple A hellhole like EA or Ubisoft.

    >Haha wouldn't it be cool if I put myself in my game as a buffed ass warrior who saves the day and gets the girl at the end? Haha, let's create a zone with a generic Asian village where bunch of bamboo hat wearing chinks use samurai swords, I remember seeing something like this in a cartoon before.

    >Yikes, this white character gives me a big ick, I'll rebel against fans of the previous installment and make him gay. It's still a white dude, so I'll add a second protagonist to offset that disgusting privilege. I wonder if my sisters at Sweet Baby Inc can advice me on the best combination of race, gender and sexuality. I'm such a brave warrior fighting the evil oppression of patriarchy. #BLM. I also want to add Asian representation so I'll make sure to consult the Asian feminist & shota professor Xiaomi Huawei to get permission and guidance from a real native.

Uh, do you really want to go back to the "old days" where game devs where just a few white nerds in a garage making weird games? It's so...bland that way
