The game doesn't straight up tell you all the basic. You have realized that you can manually rearrange your jokers and order of cards in played hands to take most out of multipliers, right?
yes i already know this, and i feel like i know the basics well. i played the demo for like 5+ hours and now almost 20 in the full game. won my first run, won a couple more base level with other decks. since then? nada.
try to really focus in on specific hands if i get something like say a straight joker? don't get enough support for it. try to just get a bunch of stuff that seems good? doesn't scale well enough by ante7/8. try to focus on planets, or dollars, or tarots, or anything just to try something different? idk it just falls apart.
somehow this game is crushing me. one thing i don't really do is card counting, like looking at whats left in my deck, if say i'm looking to pull a couple more spades for a flush on a discard. but that seems really extra just for the base difficulty.
i mean you generally DO want xmult, as in things that multiply your multiplier, last. things that add a flat value to chips or multiplier generally don't matter though
It would if you had jokers that actually interacted. You should have learned order of operations in grade school you know
3 months ago
Anonymous
i have had jokers where the order would matter (i usually have 2 additive and 3 multiplicative), but i've never felt screwed over by it. at most you'd need to play one extra hand to figure out the order of your jokers, but on ante 8 your joker and deck setup should be good enough to meet the target in one good hand anyway
3 months ago
Anonymous
>at most you'd need to play one extra hand
wow imagine if you had limited hands in the game ahah
I got a really good run going surprisingly early since buying the game yesterday but I choked on the last hand of ante 8, turned my computer off and went to bed immediately
The game doesn't straight up tell you all the basic. You have realized that you can manually rearrange your jokers and order of cards in played hands to take most out of multipliers, right?
Nah, the game is the usual rogueshit cardslop that has nothing to do with player skill. All the outcomes are out of your hands despite that morons like everyone playing it are fooled into thinking they have any influence on the game.
You're not playing shit. You're pulling a slot machine lever each time you engage with one of these shitty games.
Just like every card game, tcg, etc, you have a luck factor and no way to 100% win every time with skills. The only goal is, like every card game, to maximize your chances by doing the best moves possible and dealing with probabilities and math and also knowing the cards.
the game requires you to intuit basically everything rather than teaching so it isn't entirely on you. You'll start steamrolling whenever you figure things out (as a tip: your early game and endgame strategy will likely come out vastly different joker-wise)
Both are equally valuable (the ideal is having both be the same number, which is why the plasma deck which autobalances has a difficulty increase as a penalty), but you get more chips than mult from upgrading a hand, so you can scale chips with that and focus more on mult.
most sources of mult/xmult are gonna be sourced from our jokers, so chips from bonus/foil are better put on your cards.
Obviously this all depends on what you can get in the run.
dude, I reached ante 11 with a 3-kinds deck abd saw webms that are high cards but with a perfect deck. as long as you tame the system you can go very far.
The joker on the far left is a legendary that creates a negative copy of a random consumable you have in your inventory after every round. And he's using another joker to copy it. So he's getting two extra consumables that don't take up any space (because negative) every round.
You need to get a particular spectral card (I got it in a tarot deck once so it seems to have a small chance of appearing in non spectral packs) to unlock them. Not sure if you need to use that card every time you want to get them or if they have a small chance of appearing in shops or buffoon packs afterwards
This game needs to let the player start off with opening a pack of arcane, planet or joker cards. Tired of not being able to hit a goddamn thing 5 runs in a row on the very first small blind.
Beating the first boss with a black deck its literally a 50/50
You got the violet vessel, a boss blind that has a significantly bigger requirement than the others. Most of them have a requirement of 100k, but do other things to frick with you like forcing you to sell a joker or randomly disabling a joker every hand
This game needs to let the player start off with opening a pack of arcane, planet or joker cards. Tired of not being able to hit a goddamn thing 5 runs in a row on the very first small blind.
My Gros Michel's usually last through 5-6 antes before I get too fed up with the absurd rng and sell to make room for a better joker. "1 in 4" my ass, Wheel of Fortune has the exact same issue where it never procs.
>get 2 4-of-a-kind 20x mult jokers >spectral a good 10 extra jacks and pull 3 from packs along with a few extra 4s and aces >get to the needle >can only draw 3 jacks and run out of discards and STILL can't get a 4th >lose
It was early (maybe ante 4/5), so maybe 4 of a kind is just kind of shit, but is there a way to more consistently thin your deck? This run legitimately almost made me throw my deck.
>is there a way to thin your deck
yes, there's tarot and spectral cards that can convert or outright remove cards from your deck. some jokers also do it too, like trading card as a once per blind permanently remove 1 >consistently
no
>finish an orange stake run for the first time after almost two days >celebrate internally until seeing the gold stake condition
Frick it, I'm going in.
It has to be that way on purpose just to frick with people, I don't see why it would copy the left except to specifically frick with people trying to copy aces
sell your shit and reinvent your build halfway through. i always try to keep a pool of $25 to max out interest (unless i'm playing green) and act as an emergency pivot
1. keep changing up the jokers to ones that have synergy potential
2. make sure you have both chip and mult jokers and not just either type
3. always keep 10+ dollars on hand so if that one joker that synergises well with shit you already have pops up you can buy it
i don't remember how much ante 1 needle asks for, but iirc ante 1 boss normally takes 800 (which a straight flush gives) and needle takes less than a normal boss. even if you have nothing in terms of jokers you can probably also get it with a 4 of a kind though, and even a bad chip or mult joker will let you play something like a flush/straight/full house through it
With no upgrades, an okay Full House will beat it. Something like 88855 should score enough. A Four of a Kind or High Straight will too. Any of these let you get the extra cash from unspent hands on the first Small Ante which you desperately need past White Stake

you don't, but the unlockable abandoned deck has no face cards meaning 40 in deck to start with instead of 52
thats not what my screenshot is showing
this card usually reads "for each card under 52 in your full deck"
but the dev actually coded it to be "for each card under your deck's starting total"
usually just 3 hanged man is enough for this card to really come online, so if you have a good tarot source you can reliably hit high mult with it
Question: does Ankh's copy keep incremental buffs (like Vampire's)?
I think my plan here is to keep farming Vamp's mult growth w/ Midas Mask until it hits a respectable number, then sell all my other jokers to guarantee Ankh hits Vamp and get carried to victory on two huge vampires.
Indeed it does. Thanks, anon.
I wound up having to cut the farming via Midas Mask short when Blueprint popped up in the store. Now I have this disgusting combo.
How many ascension equivalents are here to conquer?
I'd imagine the effects also stack just like in StS meaning that the third chip will have the second and first chip effects and whatnot.
And, do you have to beat every level on every deck? There's like a million decks.
There are 8 Stakes counting the default difficulty. Not only do you have to beat every Stake with every Deck (you can't even start on Gold Stake with a fresh Deck if you've unlocked it with another, you have to go through all 8 Stakes), but the game tracks which Jokers you clear Ante 8 with per Stake. So if you want to 100% the game you have to clear Gold Stake with every Deck and every Joker.
So you better get started before he starts adding more Jokers and Decks.
>if you want to 100% the game you have to clear Gold Stake with every Deck and every Joker
frick off I swear games track such menial shit just to torment my completionist autism
If you bring a consumable that modifies cards into any of the bosses that flip cards you can set the animation speed to slowest and use it to peek at the cards
Depends on the kind of run/deck you are building, but most of the time the answer is never unless you get the hologram joker that builds the multiplier for every card you add to your deck or you've got money to fish for something that's harder to find like a red seal or polychrome card. For everything else it's better to use death/hanged man/etc. to focus your hand.
I mean when you run out of cards in your deck. I had whittled my deck down to like 10 super powerful cards, thinking the deck would cycle through once I played them all. Nope.
the mistake youre probably making is taking a bunch of "good" or "on-theme" jokers and running out of steam in the later antes because youre scaling additively instead of multiplicatively
>cards debuffed by "[Suit] is Disabled" bosses don't even count for that suit >Flower Pot NEEDS that suit for its multiplier >Flower Pot gets countered by FOUR FRICKING BOSSES
Holy shit, what an awful Joker. At least I discovered it on a shit run, anyway.
This game fricking rules. That is all. Haven't even completed a run but I know this will probably get even more hours than helldivers out of me this year. 2024 is actually off to a pretty good start considering how much 23 was shilled as "the best year for gaming"
has anyone made some sort of excel table for probabilities for every hand depending on amount of cards you already have for it and how discarding changes it? i'd take a look at that
you're right but there's also the hanged man and this whole tarot thing is full of open interpretation separate from practical meaning so i can't be assed to learn about it
im curious. Whats the most bullshit thing the game has done to you? be it entirely your fault or not , i'll start with. >Anaglyph Deck >Just finished Ante 3 and there hasnt been any good tags >Hologram in buffoon pack but dont take it >One of the Ante 4 tags is standard packs >mfw
Like the second run I ever had I got the Black Hole, and could have won because I had a really powerful Ancient Joker flush setup but The Eye fricked me. Haven't seen Black Hole since. I hate how the game susses out your strategy and tries to kill you.
>most played = all hands tied at play count
dogshit card to get early, i thought i'd have some leeway with hands that are tied for most played, but no
this card has a limited lifespan before it resets unless you built up one or two hands into a high # of plays already
it's mid because LocalThunk nerfed the mult increment AFAIK. It gets outshone by mult multipliers that can go higher than X5 like vampire or Hologram. It's doable though as long as you find it early and can survive without the multiplier. 15ish high cards though just to be safe really kills the value but if youre good with hand management you can make it work if no other good Jokers are available
Okay so I've dumped an ungodly amount of hours on this game for the past week now and I have two complaints about it. One major; one minor.
The minor one is the fact that there aren't any Royal Flush builds in this game. Like sure there's the Joker that gives you a spectral for straight flushes but it's a bit disappointing that the ever coveted Royal Flush hand in the real world is a cinplete afterthought in this one. Even fricking pairs more love. It'd be great if there were a handful of Jokers that incentivized and heavily rewarded you for actually pulling those hands off.
But my bigger complaint by far is the fact that the higher stakes just aren't great to play. At its heart I feel Balatro is all about combos. Point hunting taken to its most illogically satisfying conclusion and the Endless mode is a great example of this even if most of the time it just devolves into endless retrigger abuse. Unlike the ascensions in StS, the stakes in Balatro just make you do unfun decisions. It's unnecessarily punishing without providing an interesting wrinkle to the game outside of the eternal Jokers. It just makes it so that the first few Antes are more boring. A stark contrast to how even in A20 Slay the Spire it's interesting because the double Act 3 bosses actually asks the player to think about both the short and long term decision in a run more than if it was in a lower difficulty. I wouldn't want to replay higher stakes in Balatro but I can't play StS without it being A18 or above.
just got done grinding out two purple stakes and i agree lmao
its so fricking grindy and soul sucking
utterly kneecaps the one more run feel of the game
Upgrade your deck and level your hands. Try to get jokers like DNA (clones the first card you play each round), the joker that gives your cards +4 chips when you play them, stuff like that. Also jokers that give you money.
ante 12 really fricked me in the ass. i think i hit the limit of just relying on 5-of-a-kind. i need one of those cards that jacks up mult while remaining in your hand or some other jank mechanic
I like the game but I need to rip myself away from it already. It's consuming me. I just keep playing, chasing the high, wanting to see the numbers go bigger and bigger. Glad I've played it, but I've had my fill. I can already feel myself turning into this, just hitting new run until something hits
> tfw I only now realize you can figure out some information on face down cards by clicking the sorting options
Amazing I made it so far by just discarding them
>get to 8/8 several times only to get fricked by the game every time in the last hand
I just want to clear the game with the green deck and unlock The Duo you piece of shit game.
I went for a Flush deck and got 3 cards of each suit, just frick it
>really sick pareidolia (all cards count as face cards) deck just about shaping up, on pace to get to ante 12 or something >needle >i think I can do it but ""to be safe"" reroll it >all face cards are debuffed
Bros I need your guidance
My vampire has 9.8x on it and a Polychrome Blueprint to the left of it at the moment and it's only getting better, fortunately
But Ante 12 is where the game gets exponential, I feel like I may need to dump Dice and Bloodstone soon for better options
Its just Bloodstone can give me upwards of 6x-10x multiplier currently but I need something that goes higher than that soon, possibly like Vampire itself like Canio or something
i was so fricking bothered with getting over joyous about 2 negative jokers that i didn't even see that boss absolutely murders my build. and i had a reroll too, just for that occasion god fricking dammit
oh and on top of that turns out im also banned from posting how fricking great
https://files.catbox.moe/zolnvz.png
my only gripe right now is that higher stake runs basically turn into a fest of rolling new game over and over until you get good RNG
i'm glad for the added challenge but the shop is just so volatile that certains runs are basically DoA regardless of planning skill
I think it'll get better over time with mods and additions to the game
I'd like if you did one of the harder challenge runs or high stakes runs, you'd permanently unlock the base +4 Mult Joker
That way you can sustain a little longer in the early game and it'd facilitate more long-term decisions
i've determined that this game is way worse than slay the spire just because it has stupid chores like needing to sort played hands, sort jokers and sequencing your booster cards as if you're about to draw the fool. At higher stakes the game is unfun before you get usable jokers because you just lose the run, at all stakes the game is unfun when you have stacks of good jokers because you're just slamming the same sequence over and over again. this is one of the only single player games I've played where I keep thinking it would be more fun if I had a bot do shit for me like organize my played hand, organize jokers then straight up play the game for me once a run is guaranteed to beat ante 8.
actually the more i think about it the more this game seems like raw ass. low ante is boring, high ante is boRing, mid ante can be boring. all you're doing is hoping you roll good shops, it's like one of the worst parts in FTL made into a stand alone game. With all that said, I'm finding the challenges more fun than the stakes.
>I think it'll get better over time with mods and additions to the game
i don't think the game can be fixed. Maximizing score is always going to be joker reliant and goad players into pidgeon holing themselves into brainless shit like slamming the same hand down every turn. All of the jokers that reward a variety of hands suck shit and they always will because of the nature of modifying a deck to suit a hand.
The reason why this game is shit is because it punishes you for shenanigans. You are forced to high roll to win, there is a lot of joker variety but holy shit if you commit to a line you can get a boss that just outright counters your deck. This is on top of dodging both draft RNG and game play RNG.
>You are forced to high roll to win, there is a lot of joker variety but holy shit if you commit to a line you can get a boss that just outright counters your deck. This is on top of dodging both draft RNG and game play RNG.
i don't touch flush decks just because of the 1/4 chance of instantly losing to a boss if shop RNG didn't give you a boss reroll. In STS you get bosses that punish you for specializing in a specific deck but they don't completely shut it down.
Nah, it'll be done. I'm sure the dev's will add some modifiers that are like >The higher the ante, the better jokers you find
Plus adding better variants more often, like the later the game state, the more negative jokers you may find, etc etc
i don't think smoothing out joker RNG is going to fix the game because having good jokers means playing the same hands over & over again. With no/shit jokers your lines of play are diminished because you 0 plays that'll pas blinds, with great jokers your lines of play are diminished because you have 1 play. Smoothing out joker RNG will improve it but the foundation is broken.
i've come to the same conclusion about the reroll price being a problem
paying the price of a whole ass joker for one reroll on a shop that only has 2 slots by default is insane
I feel like the main issue is shops being too small / rerolls being too expensive, at least early
like how are you actively supposed to choose anything when there's literally only thing to buy
the reroll prices are dumb as hell and players should have the ability to re-roll boss blinds by default.
>RNG the game. fun at first but then you see behind the curtain
what do you mean? poker has always been about luck/rng. it's fun and it can still be fun if you accept that games don't need to be hypercompetitive min/maxing to be fun
>poker
it actually drives me up the wall that balatro takes a bunch of ques from poker, not just because poker sucks ass but because we're in the midst of a traditional card game renaissance. JP trick taking games are being brought over to the USA enthusiast games like Scout are found in your local target. whatever i'll finish my game faster and dump the entire story half if people will slurp up poker slop like balatro
Nah, it'll be done. I'm sure the dev's will add some modifiers that are like >The higher the ante, the better jokers you find

Poker is about social engineering you dumb frick
I haven't posted here in years and these comments are so fragrantly stupid that I had to post.

ok, go tell localthunk or whoever to someone who cares about your brilliant ideas
I feel like the main issue is shops being too small / rerolls being too expensive, at least early
like how are you actively supposed to choose anything when there's literally only thing to buy
i've come to the same conclusion about the reroll price being a problem
paying the price of a whole ass joker for one reroll on a shop that only has 2 slots by default is insane
>Temperance >The Fool >Hermit >Rocket >Egg
God I fricking love making money in this game bros
Making money in this feels so much better than in Isaac or Risk of Rain or any other game and I don't know why but it's just so satisfying
>been playing for 4 hours, no guides >try yellow deck for consecutive $5 challenge >coast along the blinds with a Two Pair build >get to final blind, it's [Force one Card to be played] >reroll for something easier <---- clueless >blind becomes 300,000 >only get 110,000
I don't like having to look up stuff to play well but losing that close to the end because I didn't know what pools ante 8 pull from makes me get a feeling so complicated
>spend 30 minutes on a run so you can learn the fact the game will buttfrick you sometimes
You don't need to play a lot of rounds to know this game buttfricks you as a game design choice and you're just supposed to reroll another match.
is there a secret interaction between empty voucher and paint brush voucher? it seems empty one makes your hand smaller (without a mention of that anywhere ha ha how funmy) while brush makes it bigger. im not planning on getting empty one ever again so... does brush do anything if you have empty?
The Blank Voucher unlocks a different Voucher that will only show up if you've bought the Blank Voucher that run like Omen Globe/Observatory/Glow Up/etc. That's it.
frick my butthole i haven't even scratched the surface, been playing for 20 hour and this is all i've got so far. i thinky mighest score in one hand has been 400k and thats it.
The last 5 Jokers on the list are all Legendary and can only be obtained from Soul cards from Spectral packs. Soul cards can also spawn in Arcana packs if you have Omen Globe/are playing Ghost Deck.
my only real goal is to luck out a gold stake win for the first time
then I'll just hit the unlock all button and play on white stakes forever because holy frick this is moronic
Beating the game places a sticker on the jokers you had at the end depending on the stake you are on
Gold sticker is the ultimate difficulty, applying the 7 other debuffs on your run on top of the -1 hand size
To get the ultimate achievement, you need to beat the game on Gold Stake with each combination of jokers currently in the game (150), its more likely than not that anyone getting this achievement cheated in some way or the other, unless they have 1000+ hrs played.
Alright fellers I unlocked everything except some jokers and vouchers. How do I get these vouchers and jokers? Jokers will just be random but can the vouchers be gamed in any way?
green joker's fine if you get it early, i had a memey run with double green joker/banner/ramen where i played garbage hands and got great chip/multiplier value out of it
You're supposed to play a single bad hand type in the early game to get a buffer zone, then switch in the middle to start farming counters and end by spamming the real hand type in the later antes.
Stuff like high card -> pair/triple -> 4/5 five-of-a-kind.
It's pretty hard to make work, but it can have a huge multiplier
other anons say it will reset if the amount played between hands are equal. it'd probably be better o go for a strategy that evolves, such as going from flush to five flush or flush house
Nah Red Card is actually pretty good if you keep money stocked because it has really strong +Mult scaling. It's probably like on average $7 for +6Mult, and even only skipping boosters you really don't care for like Standard packs or Buffoon/Spectrals that don't have anything you want it's +3 for $3/4. Like I think Fortune Teller is pretty good, and Fortune Teller is +1 per Tarot, there's just stuff like Vagabond and Cartomancer that make it scale faster. Obviously past Ante 9 XMult is king but Red Card can win you games. It is way better than some Jokers.
red card is strong as frick unless you have that chip on that increases booster prices every ante. you turn your econ into guaranteed flat mult. add in any mult multiplier and a shitty chip joker then it's free.
>Midas Mask to make all face cards gold when played >Vampire to suck the gold out and increase mult by x0.2 per card played >Burnt Joker to increase the level of first discarded hand by 1
>Discard high card to increase level >Farm mult for vamp by playing shitty face hands like 2 pair >Oneshot required score by playing a single high card
My vamp had >50 mult score at the end, made it to ante 12. It was pretty nuts, fun game
You don't need to play the game to be familiar with a deck of cards and the poker hands. A 52 card deck and poker hands will also come up in basically any intro to statistics and probability course
I haven't played poker in a decade or more, but the game is still very intuitive to play. It's just a theme for the game, it isn't really like poker at all
>get kinda bored of my current deck >quit playing >spend the next hour considering going back to play the game even though i wasn't enjoying the deck
why is my brain like this.
I'm still a bit of a noob at this game so I don't want to shit on it but
it just feels like there's no reason to try and "specialize" into a higher/more difficult hand type. Like I see all these jokers specifically for straights, straight-flushes, royals, etc. but why would I ever spend money on going into those when they're so hard to make? If you level up full houses or even do a high card play you can get more chips doing that then fishing for a really strong hand. I'm a bit conflicted on this game where it feels like the mechanic of leveling up specific hands was added to make it more RPG like but actually makes the game less appealing and fun. Of course I'm a noob so I might just be wrong, I just got the Shortcut Joker last game so I was trying to make it work, but I guess you need a special deck or WAY more tarot cards to destroy shit cards to actually make a royal flush deck doable.
They combo with other stuff better, for example there is one starting deck that only contains 2 suits and if you get the joker that makes straights work with a space of 1 between cards you'll be getting straight flushes almost every hand
You are not breaking the Ante 11 Wall without
1: Insane bullshit Joker Combos
2: Specialized decks built to scale off of the bigger payout hands
3: A combination of the above but playing the easy High Card/Pair/2/3/4/5 of a kind stuff + further minmaxed cards
If you just want to beat Ante 8 you can do it with Flushes/Straights and whatever junk hands, but if you are aiming for a super mega high score? You HAVE to Manip your deck hard. And people love chasing those high scores.
early bloodstone is such a ball buster
it can be so great late game but if it doesn't proc enough in early game when it doesn't have support you just die
Damn High Card is fun, had a godlike start with Poly Burnt Joker start and cloned it then just jammed High Card to lvl 60, sadly didn't find any other good multiplier jokers to go with it.
>here's a bunch of mechanics to help mitigate bad luck >now here's a bunch of difficulty levels that remove them one by one until you just reset at any minor unlucky inconvenience
But you won't be able to unlock all the decks without beating the higher stakes :^) Stakes are there just for hardcore autists that figured the game out at minmax level and want to get the bragging rights about beating hyper hard wiener ball torture urethra destroying difficulties
They really should make saved discards at the end of a hand always worth something, even if its like 2 for a $. Otherwise you just end up with people always high flush chasing even if their opening hand only had a King Jack shared suit.
is it normal to just restart constantly until the first tag is an immediate reward? I can't see any other reason to bother when it doesn't give money for playing.
on gold stakes I often try to one-shot the first small blind to see if there's a joker that might get me out of this early game hell
your cards need to add up to 40 to get 300 chips with a flush, 35 with full house, and 45 with a straight you can hold R to reset immediately
Yeah that's what I've been doing for anything that's not free cards or packs. It's practically an insult to put vouchers or rare jokers there at ante 1 since there's no way to afford them
you'll start getting planets after you play it once
whether it's all the time or just that run I don't remember because I haven't been paying attention
Five Of A Kind / Flush House / Flush Five do have planets, they just don't appear in the Celestial Packs until you do them in each run so they don't clog the pool with another 3 hand types that are impossible for base decks to do.
>read boss blind as the mouth >play a suboptimal hand >lose >it was actually the needle >mfw this has happened 3 times in one session because i can't fricking read
I liked Diceomancer, Starvaders and Shogun Showdown recently. Cobalt Core was a big one too and finally maybe Rungore if you're into things that goes out of control.
Slay the Spire, obviously
Astrea: six-sided oracles is also a pretty cool deckbuilding game. I want to play more of it, but it's so complex that it's kind of exhausting to play since you have to keep track of so many things and balance risks
There's also Monster Train, I heard it's very good, but I have never played it
if youve ever played a deckbuilder roguelike before its pretty simple, basically draw a hand and try to make a poker thing out of them, you get chips depending on which one you make (pairs are worth less than a flush etc), you can change what cards are in your deck by deleting them, changing them to a different card, or making them worth more points. Jokers are modifiers, something like make spades worth more, or your last hand is worth more, or straights can be made with a gap between each card
Gaming enough to win green I guess. It did start falling off because I got almost zero tarot cards to enhance my faces. Final hand was three 2's which was pretty funny to me.
I'm losing my mind here
I just can't win, I keep getting bodied by regular blinds because I get shit Jokers and don't know how to get good ones
do I reroll? Do I save money? what skips are worth taking? I just want to beat the game with Red Deck
I've had a run with obelisk where i got it early enough to feed it with tons of high cards and got it to 5x mult by the end, but yeah, it's real fricking conditional.
I've been having a problem with the game
the whole time I was playing I was seeing the Joker card wrong
I thought it was a gremlin of some kind with no neck and little arms and legs >pic related
am I moronic?
Sometimes you know you're going to die this ante or start of the next, and getting more time to find a good joker is all you can fall back on.
I've had runs I've won from that. 4 hands is way more than you ever need anyway.
-1 hand isn't even a nerf when you factor in the power level of jokers that trigger on the final hand (Dusk, Acrobat), and 3 extra blinds/shops to scale some jokers like Castle or Spare Pants is pretty strong
i genuinely don't get people who are still into basedjaks at this point? Is it due to some sort of weird superiority complex you get from it or something? People who need to gawk at losers for the sake of feeling superior are even more loserish to me. I'm sure basedboys even have more test than your average image board dweller, as that shit has actual protein.
this game not tracking total attempts makes me feel better about myself since I dont know how shit I might be. In a game like Noita I feel like an absolute moron only winning 8 out of 750 runs
>try to fish for full house >the game laugh at me giving 4 fricking pair in the worst moment possible after using all the discard >make two pair hoping to get any of the other two pair to complete the full house >get two fricking pairs again
EVERY
SINGLE
FRICKING
TIME
I finally got to ante 12... I can rest now
Two protips I learned today:
Discarding or playing one card against The Serpent will let you go over your hand size limit since you ALWAYS draw 3 cards.
Oops! All 6s doubles the probability of The Wheel's ability.
My best run was that fricking god with a Joker that gave me tarot cards every bind
After every bind, buy a bunch of tarot cards and sell them and he was always x6 at worst
i literally haven't cleared even a standard run since launch day.
am i... retarted?
It takes a while with a bit of luck
the order of the jokers matters a lot. generally you want to put chip jokers first, then +mult, then xmult last.
wait really? i thought joker procs only mattered during the card scoring.
Chip jokers don't really matter where they go, it's only +mult and xmult that the order makes a huge difference.
yes i already know this, and i feel like i know the basics well. i played the demo for like 5+ hours and now almost 20 in the full game. won my first run, won a couple more base level with other decks. since then? nada.
try to really focus in on specific hands if i get something like say a straight joker? don't get enough support for it. try to just get a bunch of stuff that seems good? doesn't scale well enough by ante7/8. try to focus on planets, or dollars, or tarots, or anything just to try something different? idk it just falls apart.
somehow this game is crushing me. one thing i don't really do is card counting, like looking at whats left in my deck, if say i'm looking to pull a couple more spades for a flush on a discard. but that seems really extra just for the base difficulty.
ah frick, for real ?
Not a single word of this is true.
i mean you generally DO want xmult, as in things that multiply your multiplier, last. things that add a flat value to chips or multiplier generally don't matter though
yeah its not like one of the boss blinds of ante 8 flips your jokers and randomizes them
i mean that totally wouldnt matter right?
nta but it doesn't, that boss modifier is practically a free
It would if you had jokers that actually interacted. You should have learned order of operations in grade school you know
i have had jokers where the order would matter (i usually have 2 additive and 3 multiplicative), but i've never felt screwed over by it. at most you'd need to play one extra hand to figure out the order of your jokers, but on ante 8 your joker and deck setup should be good enough to meet the target in one good hand anyway
>at most you'd need to play one extra hand
wow imagine if you had limited hands in the game ahah
i like argumentative anons like you
Took me about 6 hours to realize the order of the Jokers, and the order of your hand, was important. After that I very quickly won a round.
No hecking way this is real
bros...im so fricked...
I got a really good run going surprisingly early since buying the game yesterday but I choked on the last hand of ante 8, turned my computer off and went to bed immediately
The game doesn't straight up tell you all the basic. You have realized that you can manually rearrange your jokers and order of cards in played hands to take most out of multipliers, right?
basically you need +mult joker, +chips joker, x mult joker
and just smash straights or flashes
it should be an autopilot to the end
Nah, the game is the usual rogueshit cardslop that has nothing to do with player skill. All the outcomes are out of your hands despite that morons like everyone playing it are fooled into thinking they have any influence on the game.
You're not playing shit. You're pulling a slot machine lever each time you engage with one of these shitty games.
>filtered by the first small blind
cope
Just like every card game, tcg, etc, you have a luck factor and no way to 100% win every time with skills. The only goal is, like every card game, to maximize your chances by doing the best moves possible and dealing with probabilities and math and also knowing the cards.
I literally beat the standard run on my second attempt.
I can't even finish a run
Use the green deck and never discard.
yes lol
i got the game 3 days ago and didn't know how to play poker and i've beaten all the decks
the game requires you to intuit basically everything rather than teaching so it isn't entirely on you. You'll start steamrolling whenever you figure things out (as a tip: your early game and endgame strategy will likely come out vastly different joker-wise)
At the end of the day it's all about the multiplier. And the multiplier multiplier.
Sometimes I cant decide if to get a chip (Bonus Card) or addition mult upgrade
Mult is always better, right?
Both are equally valuable (the ideal is having both be the same number, which is why the plasma deck which autobalances has a difficulty increase as a penalty), but you get more chips than mult from upgrading a hand, so you can scale chips with that and focus more on mult.
most sources of mult/xmult are gonna be sourced from our jokers, so chips from bonus/foil are better put on your cards.
Obviously this all depends on what you can get in the run.
you want your chips and multiplier to be as close to equal as possible, so whatever you have less of is what you want to increase.
>ape poker
>but only 3 hands are actually viable
this feels like a design fail
You can beat runs with pair or even high card
'can win runs'
>t. has only beaten anti 8
there's a webm floating around of an anon going into scientific notation with high card
High card chads stay winning
yes? what do you think winning runs means?
>anti
learn your poker terms
dude, I reached ante 11 with a 3-kinds deck abd saw webms that are high cards but with a perfect deck. as long as you tame the system you can go very far.
you just need to frick your deck into submission with tarot and spectral cards and anything becomes viable by endgame
you can win runs with any hand type, given the right jokers
how do you get an inventory this big?
The joker on the far left is a legendary that creates a negative copy of a random consumable you have in your inventory after every round. And he's using another joker to copy it. So he's getting two extra consumables that don't take up any space (because negative) every round.
ah ok thats nuts
are legendaries just very rare or is there something special involved in having them appear?
I've only got them from spectral packs
ah ok, thanks
havent had much luck getting spectral packs
ill keep a lookout
You need to get a particular spectral card (I got it in a tarot deck once so it seems to have a small chance of appearing in non spectral packs) to unlock them. Not sure if you need to use that card every time you want to get them or if they have a small chance of appearing in shops or buffoon packs afterwards
I've only seen it in tarot packs so far, might only be tarot & spectral.
I've gotten it in spectral packs too
there's a spectral card that can pop up in spectral or tarot packs that spawns them
You have to take the soul from a spectral pack
Orange stake is suffering. No money so I can't scale my plays and end up drizzling out on like 5 decent runs due to no money
i love the walkie talkie it feels like a middle finger to the blind that kills face cards
>typecast challenge
>all jokers become eternal at ante 4
>verdant leaf final boss (all cards debuffed until 1 joker sold)
I am mad.
LMAO
hope your hands and mults are up to the task
Of course, it's the principle though.
Game definitely tried to frick me.
I'd assume that's pre-seeded to be part of the challenge
>cards literally don't matter
this game is such a meme
If you get a good enough Joker setup, yeah, the cards don't matter much.
welcome to the Joker game
Beating the first boss with a black deck its literally a 50/50
>Finally get to the final blind
>need 300,000 points to win
what the frick. That was such a massive spike in difficulty. I didn't even get close. The previous one just needed 70,000
You got the violet vessel, a boss blind that has a significantly bigger requirement than the others. Most of them have a requirement of 100k, but do other things to frick with you like forcing you to sell a joker or randomly disabling a joker every hand
>reddit card game
frick off
massive post
This game needs to let the player start off with opening a pack of arcane, planet or joker cards. Tired of not being able to hit a goddamn thing 5 runs in a row on the very first small blind.
That's what skipping blinds is for
I rarely get cards from skips
EVERY SINGLE GLASS CARD I PLAYED THIS RUN BROKE
I've never had a glass card break.
I am on like 12 NOPEs in a row
>picked up banana in the first shop
>lasted til ante 7
0,75 mulitplied how many times?
Assuming he didn't skip blinds, it should be at least 17. So a 0.7% chance.
I actually want it to die asap so I can pick up cavendish
i just bought a banana and it popped after the 1st round :^(
Just like yours
y-you too
My Gros Michel's usually last through 5-6 antes before I get too fed up with the absurd rng and sell to make room for a better joker. "1 in 4" my ass, Wheel of Fortune has the exact same issue where it never procs.
mine always either go extinct after 1 hand or last forever with no in between
Like HDDs
these two carried me hard
ive done it
should my first goal be to clear all the decks at white level?
do whatever you find fun, really
im playing through with all the decks that unlock other decks first but it doesnt really matter much
It should be to unlock all decks
gotta do higher stakes to get a third of the deck options, but i did the first 10 on white before unlocking the remaining 5. do what you want though
I've played at least 25 runs trying to do orange stake. It's so unbelievably over
>get 2 4-of-a-kind 20x mult jokers
>spectral a good 10 extra jacks and pull 3 from packs along with a few extra 4s and aces
>get to the needle
>can only draw 3 jacks and run out of discards and STILL can't get a 4th
>lose
It was early (maybe ante 4/5), so maybe 4 of a kind is just kind of shit, but is there a way to more consistently thin your deck? This run legitimately almost made me throw my deck.
>is there a way to thin your deck
yes, there's tarot and spectral cards that can convert or outright remove cards from your deck. some jokers also do it too, like trading card as a once per blind permanently remove 1
>consistently
no
whats a good strat for the abandoned deck?
Ace spam
only 10 ranks of cards instead of 13 = straights are easier
Literally anything. Best deck by far.
>finish an orange stake run for the first time after almost two days
>celebrate internally until seeing the gold stake condition
Frick it, I'm going in.
>chance to make a joker holographic/foil
>tried that shit like 10 times
>nope'd every time
Is this shit broken or what
Took me 17 tries to get one to work. It's bullshit.
took me 10+ tries, then it worked twice in a row. maybe the dice joker makes it viable but those aren't great odds
I've yet to see the fricking thing work myself after 20 hours.
>high card run
>the ox
Black person
Literally lost to the Ox at ante 7 less than 5 minutes ago.
Frick the Ox
Frick the Mouth
Frick the Arm
Frick the Plant
Is there any point to not using a planet card as soon as you get it?
some jokers give bonuses for sold cards
you can sell for 1 if youll never use it
Yeah if you wanna do
I finally did it! I finally used the death tarot card without double checking the description
It has to be that way on purpose just to frick with people, I don't see why it would copy the left except to specifically frick with people trying to copy aces
but it even tells you to rearrange the cards
I know that, the point is precisely people above who don't read it closely enough
I literally say "left into the right" out loud every time I use it
How do you salvage a build that's really good in the early game, but you know won't scale to the end?
sell your shit and reinvent your build halfway through. i always try to keep a pool of $25 to max out interest (unless i'm playing green) and act as an emergency pivot
1. keep changing up the jokers to ones that have synergy potential
2. make sure you have both chip and mult jokers and not just either type
3. always keep 10+ dollars on hand so if that one joker that synergises well with shit you already have pops up you can buy it
Died at the boss blind in ante 7. Rip. I got the big one that takes 80,000 to beat and I just couldn't keep up.
Me playing mahjong this week in between Balatro rounds.
Iq filtered by superior american entertainment. You don't even need to know how to play poker to play this
Well bros? What's the optimal play here?
what's your deck look like?
Base, no changes outside of typical Abandoned.
hit next round and pray to god
how tf do i make the black deck work
I got to Ante 7 by skipping most small blinds. It feels really dependant on getting good skips. I wasn't doing small blinds until ante 5
>first boss blind is the needle
>He can't roll a decent Full House to one shot it
I understand if you're playing on Blue Stake+
If you don't have good joker support is a straight flush the only way out of that?
i don't remember how much ante 1 needle asks for, but iirc ante 1 boss normally takes 800 (which a straight flush gives) and needle takes less than a normal boss. even if you have nothing in terms of jokers you can probably also get it with a 4 of a kind though, and even a bad chip or mult joker will let you play something like a flush/straight/full house through it
I forgot needle halfs the requirement
With no upgrades, an okay Full House will beat it. Something like 88855 should score enough. A Four of a Kind or High Straight will too. Any of these let you get the extra cash from unspent hands on the first Small Ante which you desperately need past White Stake
needle should be easiest at the very beginning, where you only need like one good joker to win
brehs... refunding pronto
how do you reliably get rid of a bunch of cards?
you don't, but the unlockable abandoned deck has no face cards meaning 40 in deck to start with instead of 52
thats not what my screenshot is showing
this card usually reads "for each card under 52 in your full deck"
but the dev actually coded it to be "for each card under your deck's starting total"
usually just 3 hanged man is enough for this card to really come online, so if you have a good tarot source you can reliably hit high mult with it
BOOM CHIKA AH BOOM CHIKA AH
GREEN DECK
IS BETTER THAN BLUE DECK
Question: does Ankh's copy keep incremental buffs (like Vampire's)?
I think my plan here is to keep farming Vamp's mult growth w/ Midas Mask until it hits a respectable number, then sell all my other jokers to guarantee Ankh hits Vamp and get carried to victory on two huge vampires.
iirc ankh copies the value the card, or at least it did when i used it on green joker
Indeed it does. Thanks, anon.
I wound up having to cut the farming via Midas Mask short when Blueprint popped up in the store. Now I have this disgusting combo.
multiplayer balatro when?
Finally cleared orange stake. Now I can play for fun instead of sweaty flush meta strays with checkered deck
green deck chokes on blue stakes and up. If you need good shop RNG in ante 1 just play black instead
Jesus fricking christ. Alright let's grind.
>if you want to 100% the game you have to clear Gold Stake with every Deck and every Joker
frick off I swear games track such menial shit just to torment my completionist autism
Oh come the frick on, this is the worst boss yet
If you bring a consumable that modifies cards into any of the bosses that flip cards you can set the animation speed to slowest and use it to peek at the cards
juest like in real poker
Noob here, when do you guys bother to buy standard playing cards?
I never buy standard cards unless I get the card that adds mult when you add more to the deck OR I have money to burn which is rare
It's kinda lame the game just Game Overs you when you run out of cards. I thought it'd reshuffle the deck.
I can't think of a card game that doesn't do that. If it didn't there would be no reason to just discard without a care in the world.
I mean when you run out of cards in your deck. I had whittled my deck down to like 10 super powerful cards, thinking the deck would cycle through once I played them all. Nope.
Yes that's what I'm talking about, 99% of card games don't let you do that for exactly such a reason.
>99% of card games don't let you do that
In traditional TCGs certainly, but shuffling around is definitely the norm for roguelite deck-builders.
Easiest black chip of my life
>been playing for 2 days now
>can't even win one run
the mistake youre probably making is taking a bunch of "good" or "on-theme" jokers and running out of steam in the later antes because youre scaling additively instead of multiplicatively
>cards debuffed by "[Suit] is Disabled" bosses don't even count for that suit
>Flower Pot NEEDS that suit for its multiplier
>Flower Pot gets countered by FOUR FRICKING BOSSES
Holy shit, what an awful Joker. At least I discovered it on a shit run, anyway.
This game fricking rules. That is all. Haven't even completed a run but I know this will probably get even more hours than helldivers out of me this year. 2024 is actually off to a pretty good start considering how much 23 was shilled as "the best year for gaming"
>couldn't even break 300,000,000 in endless
How stupid am I?
has anyone made some sort of excel table for probabilities for every hand depending on amount of cards you already have for it and how discarding changes it? i'd take a look at that
Do you go for it?
If my Jokers are largely good enough, otherwise I would take the other two cards.
I have not had this trigger fricking once. I've bought it 14 fricking times and it has never worked.
using the death tarot card for the nth time thinking it'd remove the two cards i want least. at least i can alt+f4 out of it
>thinking Death is about destruction instead of transformation
Lil bro hasn't studied his tarot
you're right but there's also the hanged man and this whole tarot thing is full of open interpretation separate from practical meaning so i can't be assed to learn about it
oh god oh fucjk
might have an obvious answer, but what happens when you put a ceremonial dagger next to an eternal joker? nothing?
fricking tell me about it, been trying orange stake on red deck for the last forever to unlock the last deck
nothing, same with the crazy joker, so he's actually kinda better on harder difficulties
WHAT DOES THE BLANK VOUCHER DO
It lets you buy a good voucher if it shows up later in your run.
[Removed]
Buy it 10 times across multiple runs and see, teehee!
>comfortably on tempo to beat the boss

im curious. Whats the most bullshit thing the game has done to you? be it entirely your fault or not , i'll start with.

Like the second run I ever had I got the Black Hole, and could have won because I had a really powerful Ancient Joker flush setup but The Eye fricked me. Haven't seen Black Hole since. I hate how the game susses out your strategy and tries to kill you.
A friend sent me this.
Tell your friend to clean his screen DAMN
>most played = all hands tied at play count
dogshit card to get early, i thought i'd have some leeway with hands that are tied for most played, but no
this card has a limited lifespan before it resets unless you built up one or two hands into a high # of plays already
Obelisk is absolute dogshit and should be an uncommon. Unplayable outside of baby mode due to how much it penalizes you.
Awful card, simply the fricking worst.
it's mid because LocalThunk nerfed the mult increment AFAIK.
The stakes are just for completionist tards.
>Rocket, Bootstrap and Bull but no To the Moon

Upgrade your deck and level your hands. Try to get jokers like DNA (clones the first card you play each round), the joker that gives your cards +4 chips when you play them, stuff like that. Also jokers that give you money.
indestructible riff-raff
Eternal Ceremonial Knife is best to have with it because you can feed the Knife before Madness can destroy anything.
shortcut is amazing
My homie chicot is the strongest joker
ante 12 really fricked me in the ass. i think i hit the limit of just relying on 5-of-a-kind. i need one of those cards that jacks up mult while remaining in your hand or some other jank mechanic
>game offers something I haven't discovered yet and something I actually need for my deck
>pick the undiscovered option every time
>mfw
I know God is real because the Devil smiles upon me.
Amazing I made it so far by just discarding them
Great when a facedown card is sorted between two of the same value in different suits.
oh god
heh
goddamn, shit sux
>get to 8/8 several times only to get fricked by the game every time in the last hand
I just want to clear the game with the green deck and unlock The Duo you piece of shit game.
I went for a Flush deck and got 3 cards of each suit, just frick it
for those situations there are the cards that buff the final hand 🙂
I had to sell that joker :^)
>really sick pareidolia (all cards count as face cards) deck just about shaping up, on pace to get to ante 12 or something
>needle
>i think I can do it but ""to be safe"" reroll it
>all face cards are debuffed
the plant is fricking bullshit, there's no reason to do a face build because you WILL run into that shit with no recourse
I rerolled The Arm once to be safe and got The Wall which fricked me. Only after did I realize I had nothing over lvl 1 anyways
I won for the first time by getting flushpilled and spademaxing
you didnt beat the game
the game told me I won a run
when you lie your head on your pillow at night, in your heart of hearts, a voice is screaming "you didnt beat the game"
wadda hell
Are you man enough to stop FLUSHING and being STRAIGHT?
The Psychic actually killed one of my runs where I was running a double Half Joker pair build.
>Needle
Haha, that is such an butthole boss blind.
supernova my beloved
This shit scales so slowly I don't get why anyone uses it
>black deck, double joker stencils
well i guess i can dream
> You can drag and move the enemy's blind/chip thing
For what purpose?
you can drag and move half the stuff in the game, for no purpose at all indeed it feels good though
It feels nice
my only gripe right now is that higher stake runs basically turn into a fest of rolling new game over and over until you get good RNG
i'm glad for the added challenge but the shop is just so volatile that certains runs are basically DoA regardless of planning skill
I think it'll get better over time with mods and additions to the game
I'd like if you did one of the harder challenge runs or high stakes runs, you'd permanently unlock the base +4 Mult Joker
That way you can sustain a little longer in the early game and it'd facilitate more long-term decisions
And by permanently unlock, I mean start every run with the +4 Mult vanilla joker
i've determined that this game is way worse than slay the spire just because it has stupid chores like needing to sort played hands, sort jokers and sequencing your booster cards as if you're about to draw the fool.
In STS you get bosses that punish you for specializing in a specific deck but they don't completely shut it down.
i don't think smoothing out joker RNG is going to fix the game because having good jokers means playing the same hands over & over again. With no/shit jokers your lines of play are diminished because you 0 plays that'll pas blinds, with great jokers your lines of play are diminished because you have 1 play. Smoothing out joker RNG will improve it but the foundation is broken.
the reroll prices are dumb as hell and players should have the ability to re-roll boss blinds by default.
>poker
it actually drives me up the wall that balatro takes a bunch of ques from poker, not just because poker sucks ass but because we're in the midst of a traditional card game renaissance. JP trick taking games are being brought over to the USA enthusiast games like Scout are found in your local target. whatever i'll finish my game faster and dump the entire story half if people will slurp up poker slop like balatro
Nah, it'll be done. I'm sure the dev's will add some modifiers that are like
>The higher the ante, the better jokers you find
Plus adding better variants more often, like the later the game state, the more negative jokers you may find, etc etc
RNG the game. fun at first but then you see behind the curtain
>RNG the game. fun at first but then you see behind the curtain
what do you mean? poker has always been about luck/rng. it's fun and it can still be fun if you accept that games don't need to be hypercompetitive min/maxing to be fun
Poker is about social engineering you dumb frick
now go make out with your computer screen
Don't say dumb shit, poker isn't a slot machine
you call people dumb but every card game has draw mechanics that rely on luck. but in your raging autism it didn't seem to match whatever was going on in that puny brain of yours. off yourself and the world would be better off without you
It's okay to admit you said something stupid anon, but you know, you're right, this game is more like a slot machine and not like poker at all.
>pc poker
>computer game
>social engineering
>slot machine
you are moronic. get some self awareness because all i see is you screaming at a mirror
I understand you're a braindead idiot and you just like to see the cards flashing on the screen, it's okay anon, I already know you're a midwit. You don't even understand the core flaw of this game. It is a slot machine. There is very little skill.
i get it, you are a braindead idiot. you are a hopeless moron that will be eternally raging even after you go to bed crying because of a sudden outburst of your... condition
I haven't posted here in years and these comments are so fragrantly stupid that I had to post.
Balatro is based off VIDEO POKER MACHINES. It's not sit-down poker. There is no social engineering in video poker you absolute buffoon. If you look up the word Balatro on google it should show your face.
Here. Nobody thinks you're tough with that weak flex. Step it up.
>fragrantly stupid
the ironing
why are you comparing with poker? balatro is a roguelike and poker is not. it should be compared with other game like slay the spire.
because it more closely resembles poker because it has the same fricking hands?
>>>>>slot machine
LMAO
Post proof you're even good at the game
poker isn't a game you sit down and play by yourself
i'm not here to argue semantics on what you think the redefinition of balatro should be. sit down, shut up, and just like have fun
You won't argue because you're too stupid to understand this game entirely RNG.
i'm a software engineer. i know pseudo-rng like the back of my hand, the different implementations of it on various systems and how algorithms can change how you generate it. i won't argue because it's a waste of my time. you sound like a dumb boring kid
Lol you're just mad because you know this game is entirely deterministic and there is very little skill if you have more than a toddler's level of planning.
why would i be mad? you should be mad because you lack reading comprehension
> it can still be fun if you accept that games don't need to be hypercompetitive min/maxing to be fun
you are literally being mad because you're looking for skill and not finding it in a game that doesn't need it and it's the only way you know how to have fun
The game literally stops being fun the second you do ascensions because it makes it extremely obvious how RNG the game is the first two antes to determine if you win or not. Literally depends on your first two skips being good or not.
yes, winning equals fun. losing equals not fun. almost as if rng and all its nuances are reborn everytime you play a game that has it. doesn't change what i just said
Yes anon, here's a fun game, you pick a number between 1 and 10, I'll tell you if you lose.
i pick off-hand cringe
Sorry you need to roll again, are you having fun? You might get a really good result.
nah, i gave you the benefit of the doubt and you are still boring to me. i'm done but you can go on without me
You need to roll again, isn't losing fun?
you need to reroll your brain before i continue, sorry. even you should know this without me telling you
I can already tell you're someone who gets mad when someone doesn't like your favorite ice cream flavor
yes, i'm mad and not that raging autist from earlier, simply because we're on different sides of the argument. whatever you say, you can go back to your own ice cream now
Anon you keep replying to me and you have nothing substantive to say, it's obvious you're mad I told your you ice cream isn't actually good. You can move on.
i don't need to say anything substantiative to a kid. you should be blessed with my holy presence without a word instead but a computer screen filters out how vast the gap in intelligence is between us. anonymity sure is great huh
Yeah anon because if I saw your 400 pound bloatlord body in real life I wouldn't even talk to you. You look and smell like you have a bad opinion physically.
yes, you're a chad that should be redefining the dictionary because you know even more than the developers themselves, and despite being proven wrong at every point otherwise, as long as you have the willpower to deny it anyway, all is as you will. good for you
If you actually think this game is poker you can't be helped.
look, i've already made my claims. if you refuse to look at reality then *you* can't be helped
Your claim is "the developer wrote poker on their description" that isn't a claim, using playing cards isn't poker, using suits isn't poker, straights aren't poker. The fact is this game has more in common with a luck be a landlord than video poker.
you are a confused soul. seek help
you deserve a smack upside the head if you don't like vanilla
+ poker. poker is poker
- roguelike. poker is not a roguelike
- deckbuilder. poker is not a deckbuilder.
- illegal poker hands. poker does not let you play illegal poker hands.
- game changing jokers. poker does not have game changing jokers.
- outrageous combos. poker does not have outrageous combos.
not seeing a lot of similarity tbh
ok, go tell localthunk or whoever to someone who cares about your brilliant ideas
You have to reconcile with the fact that the Stakes aren't Ascensions. They're more like autistic handicap challenges.
Balatro is exclusively designed for base level difficulty as a quick one off chill point slurping session every day.
honestly it's just bad design to have any game where you can have unwinnable runs
It's just hard to design higher stakes in a point combo based game tbh
The challenges are way better forms of difficulty
I'm a simple man
>match colors
>get points
simple as
>Temperance
>The Fool
>Hermit
>Rocket
>Egg
God I fricking love making money in this game bros
Making money in this feels so much better than in Isaac or Risk of Rain or any other game and I don't know why but it's just so satisfying
my current run is like that, but i started off going into debt. i also have no idea what i'm doing
AAAAHHHHHHH STOP DELEVELLING MY HAND
MY FLUSHES
MY FULL HOUSES
MY FOUR OF A KINDS
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
>1 in 4 cards are drawn face down
what a shit challenge
>been playing for 4 hours, no guides
>try yellow deck for consecutive $5 challenge
>coast along the blinds with a Two Pair build
>get to final blind, it's [Force one Card to be played]
>reroll for something easier <---- clueless
>blind becomes 300,000
>only get 110,000
I don't like having to look up stuff to play well but losing that close to the end because I didn't know what pools ante 8 pull from makes me get a feeling so complicated
Learning the blinds takes no time at all, there's really not that many of them
>spend 30 minutes on a run so you can learn the fact the game will buttfrick you sometimes
You don't need to play a lot of rounds to know this game buttfricks you as a game design choice and you're just supposed to reroll another match.
I resolved the play one hand boss because I didn't think I could reach it in 1 hand and then got the 300k wall
Frick me I guess
you couldn't do with two pairs what I did with one pairs. pathetic.
only won because I duped a legendary joker.
the 300k wall is my least favorite blind. You just lose unless you have a giga build.
no kidding
>doing a run, going okay, not great
>ante 8 boss is 500k points
guess i'll lose lol rng
MY JOKERS SHINING
is there a secret interaction between empty voucher and paint brush voucher? it seems empty one makes your hand smaller (without a mention of that anywhere ha ha how funmy) while brush makes it bigger. im not planning on getting empty one ever again so... does brush do anything if you have empty?
The Blank Voucher unlocks a different Voucher that will only show up if you've bought the Blank Voucher that run like Omen Globe/Observatory/Glow Up/etc. That's it.
back again with a new one
>tfw that vampire i kept feeding glass
i hope he's alright after all that, but it was worth getting my first billy
what a goofy fricking card
fricking hell 6.6 x vampire
One of my most fun runs was feeding him
Who jokermaxxing here?
What future expansion packs/Joker designs do you want bros?
For me its giving royal flushes some love. And some more "gambling" all in mechanics whatever that might entail.
The dice joker that doubled probability was an interesting mechanic
The dev should explore that a bit more
I want there to be a Joker locked behind every challenge and every deck's gold stake clear. Really make people chew that steak.
POST YFW A LEGENDARY JOKER DROPS
>get Canio (+1 xmult when face cards are destroyed) from spectral pack
>don't get a SINGLE Hanged Man
The game was rigged from the start...
THERE'S LEGENDARY JOKERS?
frick my butthole i haven't even scratched the surface, been playing for 20 hour and this is all i've got so far. i thinky mighest score in one hand has been 400k and thats it.
The last 5 Jokers on the list are all Legendary and can only be obtained from Soul cards from Spectral packs. Soul cards can also spawn in Arcana packs if you have Omen Globe/are playing Ghost Deck.
does ouija only do spades or hearts for checkered deck, or did I just get lucky?
Is Ouija the one that converts to a certain suit? If so, then no - I've gotten diamonds with it while using the checkered deck.
Hidden hands are Five of a Kind, Flush House, and Flush Five, so probably.
Is the last hand I haven't discovered 5 of a kind flush?
Is there a build that rewards always playing a different hand?
Obelisk is meme dogshit so don't mention it.
>Just realized what the whole "Joker sticker" thing is
That shit is going to make some completionist autist blow his brains off, lmao.
my only real goal is to luck out a gold stake win for the first time
then I'll just hit the unlock all button and play on white stakes forever because holy frick this is moronic
>0.000001% of players have this achievement
What's a gold sticker
Beating the game places a sticker on the jokers you had at the end depending on the stake you are on
Gold sticker is the ultimate difficulty, applying the 7 other debuffs on your run on top of the -1 hand size
To get the ultimate achievement, you need to beat the game on Gold Stake with each combination of jokers currently in the game (150), its more likely than not that anyone getting this achievement cheated in some way or the other, unless they have 1000+ hrs played.
Man stakes are fricking miserable.
I just want the Erratic deck and then stop
when I've beaten every deck on standard difficulty I will consider the game beaten. as shrimple as that.
You gotta beat Purple Stake to get all the decks THOUGH.
> Make a small deck, pretty much only 10s
> You lose if you run out of cards
Shieeet
>green stakes
I don't like this game anymore
Alright fellers I unlocked everything except some jokers and vouchers. How do I get these vouchers and jokers? Jokers will just be random but can the vouchers be gamed in any way?
name a worse joker
what's funny is that it's basically outclassed by purple sealed cards which do the same effect but way easier
sixth sense?
>not exclusively playing high card 6 stacking decks
i pick it every time
the one next to it
green joker is fire you moron
I felt the same until i won orange stake with Green Joker and Burglar fat fricking mult
It's THE high card build joker
picrelated
green joker's fine if you get it early, i had a memey run with double green joker/banner/ramen where i played garbage hands and got great chip/multiplier value out of it
i wish these types of jokers didnt reset whenever you fail them
that looks like a joker to git gud at the game with
if you've played every hand evenly then it still resets.
how are you gonna play like 15 hands evenly
You're supposed to play a single bad hand type in the early game to get a buffer zone, then switch in the middle to start farming counters and end by spamming the real hand type in the later antes.
Stuff like high card -> pair/triple -> 4/5 five-of-a-kind.
It's pretty hard to make work, but it can have a huge multiplier
Can't you just alternate pair and high card to abuse this?
You need to build up your most played hand first thats the problem
other anons say it will reset if the amount played between hands are equal. it'd probably be better o go for a strategy that evolves, such as going from flush to five flush or flush house
there's literally no way to abuse this and even in it's best case scenario the multiplier is fricking trash
Loyalty Card, Certificate, The Idol.
Red Card, who the frick would skip all this shit for like +6 mult a round max?
I legit thought red card added mult if you had two boosters in a shop and then closed the shop.
I didn't realize you had to BUY the fricking boosters as well. God its so dogshit
If you buy a mega pack and take one card before skipping, that still counts as a skip.
Red Card fricking rules
red card is strong as frick unless you have that chip on that increases booster prices every ante. you turn your econ into guaranteed flat mult. add in any mult multiplier and a shitty chip joker then it's free.
I think I may be moronic.
Now you've got real stones.
forgive my spamming
Wait a minute does shortcut work wven if there are mutiple single space gaps?
Like 10 8 6 5 3 is a straight?
Yes, Shortcut is a lot better than Four Fingers.
I've been stuck on the black stake for both of my reliable decks (Magic and Spectral) despite the difficulty not seeming to be that much of an uptake
no idea how to play poker so I'll ignore the fotm and play the thinking man's game: mahjong
it's not poker, it's a SLOT MACHINE you dunce
actually seething that your card based slot game is named what it is
the only relation it has to poker is the poker hands you play
the game gives you a quick reference for all of them
>not playing both
just got done with some east rounds in MajSoul, back to Balatro.
i learned how to play poker with this game and have beaten all the non stake decks in like a day
maybe when there's a balatro sequel it could be based on mahjong
might be kino
Balatro is actuallly closer to riichi mahjong
>the autistic points system and esoteric combos
Makes sense
>Midas Mask to make all face cards gold when played
>Vampire to suck the gold out and increase mult by x0.2 per card played
>Burnt Joker to increase the level of first discarded hand by 1
>Discard high card to increase level
>Farm mult for vamp by playing shitty face hands like 2 pair
>Oneshot required score by playing a single high card
My vamp had >50 mult score at the end, made it to ante 12. It was pretty nuts, fun game
>made it to ante 15
>couldnt beat it because i didnt have enough glass cards
FUUUUUUCK
>red
>blue
>black
>yellow
>green
which deck is easiest to win with?
The one that doubles blinds.
Green
Probably blue. I fricking hate green
The extra discard from the red deck is better than the extra hand from blue
depends on deck
a hand can function exactly the same as a discard but with the ability to score points, blue is objectively better
there are more boss blinds where discards are more useful to beat them
whichever one gives you an extra hand
Yellow, I love money
Yellow was my first. Won pretty quickly. I just won a green run and had a pretty hard time. I haven't tried black yet. The others were fine.
im a fan of green mainly due to playstyle it has ungodly lows and high because youre either buying nothing or everything
whats the easiest way to get the 100.000.000$ unlock (and ante 12 for that matter)? any particular deck or strategies?
Retriggers.
Multipliers.
Retriggers.
Multipliers.
Bros?
https://twitter.com/TheHashtag0nist/status/1762246084791796121
You don't need to play the game to be familiar with a deck of cards and the poker hands. A 52 card deck and poker hands will also come up in basically any intro to statistics and probability course
I haven't played poker in a decade or more, but the game is still very intuitive to play. It's just a theme for the game, it isn't really like poker at all
This game isn't poker. It's a playing card game. Flushes, straights, suits, etc are playing card tropes and aren't exclusive to poker.
>get kinda bored of my current deck
>quit playing
>spend the next hour considering going back to play the game even though i wasn't enjoying the deck
why is my brain like this.
have you tried crossdressing?
Would he enjoy Balatro?
>the strongest gambler
he would hate it
Only if he dies in real life if he loses a run
early bloodstone is such a ball buster
it can be so great late game but if it doesn't proc enough in early game when it doesn't have support you just die
Damn High Card is fun, had a godlike start with Poly Burnt Joker start and cloned it then just jammed High Card to lvl 60, sadly didn't find any other good multiplier jokers to go with it.
That's right, join the dark side
hahahaheeeeheeehoho
>here's a bunch of mechanics to help mitigate bad luck
>now here's a bunch of difficulty levels that remove them one by one until you just reset at any minor unlucky inconvenience
The moment I felt how fricking bad it was to not receive reward money on the small blind convinced me to not do the stakes
that one basically just teaches you what tags are worth skipping for
But you won't be able to unlock all the decks without beating the higher stakes :^)
Stakes are there just for hardcore autists that figured the game out at minmax level and want to get the bragging rights about beating hyper hard wiener ball torture urethra destroying difficulties
I reset the run immediately depending on how the first ante goes most of the time.
>no good skip bonus
>can't complete it in 1 hand
>shop has frickall
rewind time
They really should make saved discards at the end of a hand always worth something, even if its like 2 for a $. Otherwise you just end up with people always high flush chasing even if their opening hand only had a King Jack shared suit.
>straight
>full house
>four of a kind
>flush
all can clear the first round in1 hand.
is it normal to just restart constantly until the first tag is an immediate reward? I can't see any other reason to bother when it doesn't give money for playing.
on gold stakes I often try to one-shot the first small blind to see if there's a joker that might get me out of this early game hell
your cards need to add up to 40 to get 300 chips with a flush, 35 with full house, and 45 with a straight
you can hold R to reset immediately
Yeah that's what I've been doing for anything that's not free cards or packs. It's practically an insult to put vouchers or rare jokers there at ante 1 since there's no way to afford them
I've been stuck on gold stakes for like 2 hours now, god fricking help me I'm about to do something violent. -1 hand size is suicide inducing.
touch grass
Gold Stake Black Deck
Truly the ultimate Balatro experience
>gold stake
>black deck
>boss 1 is The Manacle
>Super Needle
just get broken jokers early
this guy sounds like he's joking but at gold you're holding R anyway so just use the R deck
How the frick do I get 10 vouchers in 1 run?
Either make it to Ante 10 or get lucky and find Voucher Tags / Double Tag into Voucher Tags.
Also make MONEY to buy them.
get the stone mask and vampire to attain the perfection necessary for ante 12
I'm about to make my first five of a kind, but it looks to be worse than four of a kind since it's not planet-able?
you'll start getting planets after you play it once
whether it's all the time or just that run I don't remember because I haven't been paying attention
Five Of A Kind / Flush House / Flush Five do have planets, they just don't appear in the Celestial Packs until you do them in each run so they don't clog the pool with another 3 hand types that are impossible for base decks to do.
>Only 1.1% of the playerbase won red stake difficulty
WTF?
I've come to the conclusion that the worst boss blind is the one that forces you into a single hand type
because im a moron who cant read
>read boss blind as the mouth
>play a suboptimal hand
>lose
>it was actually the needle
>mfw this has happened 3 times in one session because i can't fricking read
>take baron joker
>about to curse at the game after going like 3 rounds without seeing a single king
>remember i'm playing abandoned deck
do the blank vouchers do anything after you've collected them for that joker unlock?
It's a prerequisite to the other voucher showing up
this game is a lot of fun
you actually have to make decisions
>wildfrost
>balatro
>the 2hu one
I like these ones the most, are there any other good ones?
I liked Diceomancer, Starvaders and Shogun Showdown recently. Cobalt Core was a big one too and finally maybe Rungore if you're into things that goes out of control.
Slay the Spire, obviously
Astrea: six-sided oracles is also a pretty cool deckbuilding game. I want to play more of it, but it's so complex that it's kind of exhausting to play since you have to keep track of so many things and balance risks
There's also Monster Train, I heard it's very good, but I have never played it
So what exactly is this game? It’s poker but you buy modifier cards with your winnings to improve your score?
you play poker hands and use multipliers to increase your score
you fix your deck with special poker cards that do special shit
first look at the game is very confusing but when you play its very easy to understand and you understand why its so fun
if youve ever played a deckbuilder roguelike before its pretty simple, basically draw a hand and try to make a poker thing out of them, you get chips depending on which one you make (pairs are worth less than a flush etc), you can change what cards are in your deck by deleting them, changing them to a different card, or making them worth more points. Jokers are modifiers, something like make spades worth more, or your last hand is worth more, or straights can be made with a gap between each card
am I gaming yet?
No
Gaming enough to win green I guess.
I just want to beat the game with Red Deck
save money until 25 and keep yourself above 25 for max interest, runs started going a lot better after I figured that one out
Skips are absolutely worth it sometimes. Negative for example is an instant take if you have the money
I love this deck is so fricking stupid that its my favorite now
>One 4 in your entire Deck
DAMAGED
there should be a stake for disabling deck view to make you count your cards
>More flashbacks of the early demo
STOP I DON'T WANT TO GO BACK THE GAME IS SO MUCH EASIER NOW I LITERALLY COULDN'T WIN BEFORE
I've had a run with obelisk where i got it early enough to feed it with tons of high cards and got it to 5x mult by the end, but yeah, it's real fricking conditional.
I'm at purple. Higher stakes might just be some of the most unfun fricking shit I've had the displeasure of experiencing this year so far.
Such a stark contrast to how great the base stake is.
>gold stake
>get a Half Joker from the first shop
>escape early game hell
>get absolutely nothing else to scale up
oops oh well new run
Just found out that pressing R quickly resets a run
I've been having a problem with the game
the whole time I was playing I was seeing the Joker card wrong
I thought it was a gremlin of some kind with no neck and little arms and legs
>pic related
am I moronic?
no you had it right
It's a gremlin clown
little guy's stanced up and ready to kick your ass
do we like or hate northernlion here?
i suspect he's the only reason half of the people in this thread even know the game exists
>create a rare joker and set your money to 0
>obelisk
th-thanks spectral-sama
just won with a straight deck.. leveled my straights go lvl 21 and the joker that allows you to skip a level to make a straight was very nice
yellow deck is better than blue and red since it lets you scale interest faster
Orange stake btw
I ended up getting bloodstone :^)
You can hold a Joker to keep while Amber Acorn shuffles
I love flush
>Obelisk is bad
yeah you are not gaming hard enough
obelisk carried me to ante 12 and i was just trying to beat each deck at least once
the problem with obelisk is that it takes way too much effort to deal with
why would you ever use this, the chance to scale more is not at all worth the hand loss
For people doing pair and high card trash builds
Its very worth it if you don't really need the extra hand and you have scaling jokers.
more time to get achievements before you hit the ante 11 wall
Sometimes you know you're going to die this ante or start of the next, and getting more time to find a good joker is all you can fall back on.
I've had runs I've won from that. 4 hands is way more than you ever need anyway.
>the chance to scale more is not at all worth the hand loss
If you can't win with 1 hand, or 2 hand max, then you're just bad at the game.
I actually got my first win with this, it's useful when you make it at least halfway but know your current build just isn't gonna cut it
Hieroglyph was so good he had to nerf it by giving it -1 Hand, and it's still good.
I'm sure basedboys even have more test than your average image board dweller, as that shit has actual protein.
wojakposters don't qualify as humans
>spam r key if no madness joker in first shop
Wow completing every deck/stake was that easy huh
>buying rerolls == buying mults
Now this is true power.
>tag says next joker card is polychromatic
>you dont have the money to buy it
I CANT WIN WITH THIS DOGSHIT BLACK FRICKING DOGSHIT DECK FRICK U
this game not tracking total attempts makes me feel better about myself since I dont know how shit I might be. In a game like Noita I feel like an absolute moron only winning 8 out of 750 runs
>try to fish for full house
>the game laugh at me giving 4 fricking pair in the worst moment possible after using all the discard
>make two pair hoping to get any of the other two pair to complete the full house
>get two fricking pairs again
EVERY
SINGLE
FRICKING
TIME
im so fricking moronic i had the fricking reroll voucher too
frick me frick me
yeah big brain moves right fricking now
lets goooooooo
FRICK U DARK b***h I CAN MOVE ON
I finally got to ante 12... I can rest now
Two protips I learned today:
Discarding or playing one card against The Serpent will let you go over your hand size limit since you ALWAYS draw 3 cards.
Oops! All 6s doubles the probability of The Wheel's ability.
i just accidentally reset obelisk after successfully getting it to x25, lost while in the same blind since it was holding the whole build together
why would you ever pass up the negative joker tag
cause you don't have the money to buy it.
never
but if I get one of those meme jokers that decreases my hand size I'll be mad and skip it
is campfire the STRONGEST joker?
until you defeat the boss yeah
>Resets whe-
WEAK
Yeah, but if you're decking for maximum money using to the moon, that's really not an issue
My best run was that fricking god with a Joker that gave me tarot cards every bind
After every bind, buy a bunch of tarot cards and sell them and he was always x6 at worst
Bros... I keep getting walled at Ante 15.
How do you reliably get lots of glass cards and/or poly cards to trigger with? Is it really just dna and getting lucky with arcanas?
how the frick do you even reach antes that high lmao
you stack multipliers. a lot of them.
And I think it's gonna be a long, long time.
started playing 4 days ago, just beat gold stake for the first time. funky high card/pair builds go really well with blue deck.
