They're games with variably tolerable combat and are carried by the stories.

It's honestly pretty baffling, the type of thing you really wouldn't think possible, specially with how much companies that used to make RPGs have tried more and more to move their games to action-adventure
My guess is that it's a combination of some truly impressive and creative gameplay where you can have a multitude of actions and combinations that are apparently the closest a vidya has come to simulate a fun DnD experience and Larian's approach to writing.
It's not really a particularly well written game, not with themes, characters or story, but it's pleasant. It's like Marvel before they went formulaic and cheap, it's not deep but it pleases almost everyone.
The game itself also has that. It has Black folk, trannies, gays but it also has waifus of every type and sexualization of women aplenty
I think this combination of factors, plus other RPGs titles like Diablo IV and Starfield failing to meet expectations resulted in a perfect storm

I hate talking about anything positive here because there's so many festering morons and preteen autists, but it's a good game well executed, it had three years of early access for fans to see this and evangelize for it, and frankly the industry gave it a helping hand by sucking so much dick. There's not a lot of good stuff coming out.
It's a very similar story to CDPR, who released The Witcher 1 and got some buzz, people loved The Witcher 2 with Iorveth and Roche and they got some real buzz, and so Witcher 3 had some serious built-in hype coming off of that and just snowballed. Larian released Divinity: Original Sin which was very well received and basically saved the company, then D:OS2 was even better received and won all these GOTY awards, and BG3 had a lot of hype on day one because of that pedigree. They've made games people like, and they've built on the success well. Hopefully the trend continues and they don't fall apart under the weight of trying to go bigger and better.
It's just a good RPG that for the first time in many years gives a very authentic illusion of choice because the illusion is remarkably good and at points no illusion at all.
It's rare that you choices feel like they actually matter and the game gives you that "They thought of every little thing"-vibe.
This requires passion, skill and talent and Larian demonstrated that and got rewarded for it, simple as.

There's no doubt BG3 is massively successful, but your math is flawed by the simple fact that you can make more than one character. If I do one playthrough as a custom character and then start a new game playing as Wyll, that's not two different players. Also "creating" a character doesn't mean much. I can make a Cleric, then find out the first character you recruit is already a Cleric, then restart and make a Sorcerer instead. That's already two custom characters created within maybe half an hour.

You physically can't get enough aproval from them to trigger their scenes since the initial grove attack is one of the only thins the game forces on you (even you teleport on a ledge it will start the cutscene)

And I am shocked that the combat is not bad. Very similar to DOS and I like a "tactic" rpg, despite simple things like flanking an opponent not being there.
But I must say that the writing and character dialogs are very subpar. The main plot around tadpoles inside everyone's head is dreadful and cuts all the emotional (and frankly logical) aspects of the companion's quests. With the sole exception of Lae'zel. I believe the stupid tadpole should have been just a you and Lae thing.
Side quests are very weak to absolutely awful. With very annoying forced cutscenes, and scripted combats. Nothing feels organic it is like everything is a play and the actors are second grade school graduates. I simple research on the writers shown me that they are not truly versed in this and previous works (when they exist) are mediocre.
In short, it is not a good game, easily a very bad D&D experience, akin to have a bad DM unable to do basic redraft of his modules.
Last time Elden Ring revealed sales was at the beginning of the year. 20 millions sold. BG3 released 3 months ago but was in early access for 3 years. Similar play count on Steam for both. So it being around Elden Ring numbers is not improbable. But I doubt it's above 30 millions

My guess is that it's a combination of some truly impressive and creative gameplay where you can have a multitude of actions and combinations that are apparently the closest a vidya has come to simulate a fun DnD experience and Larian's approach to writing.
It's not really a particularly well written game, not with themes, characters or story, but it's pleasant. It's like Marvel before they went formulaic and cheap, it's not deep but it pleases almost everyone.
The game itself also has that. It has Black folk, trannies, gays but it also has waifus of every type and sexualization of women aplenty
I think this combination of factors, plus other RPGs titles like Diablo IV and Starfield failing to meet expectations resulted in a perfect storm

I hate talking about anything positive here because there's so many festering morons and preteen autists, but it's a good game well executed, it had three years of early access for fans to see this and evangelize for it, and frankly the industry gave it a helping hand by sucking so much dick. There's not a lot of good stuff coming out.
It's a very similar story to CDPR, who released The Witcher 1 and got some buzz, people loved The Witcher 2 with Iorveth and Roche and they got some real buzz, and so Witcher 3 had some serious built-in hype coming off of that and just snowballed. Larian released Divinity: Original Sin which was very well received and basically saved the company, then D:OS2 was even better received and won all these GOTY awards, and BG3 had a lot of hype on day one because of that pedigree. They've made games people like, and they've built on the success well. Hopefully the trend continues and they don't fall apart under the weight of trying to go bigger and better.

There's no doubt BG3 is massively successful, but your math is flawed by the simple fact that you can make more than one character. If I do one playthrough as a custom character and then start a new game playing as Wyll, that's not two different players. Also "creating" a character doesn't mean much. I can make a Cleric, then find out the first character you recruit is already a Cleric, then restart and make a Sorcerer instead. That's already two custom characters created within maybe half an hour.
All the while, this is still only a single sale.

You physically can't get enough aproval from them to trigger their scenes since the initial grove attack is one of the only thins the game forces on you (even you teleport on a ledge it will start the cutscene)

And I am shocked that the combat is not bad. Very similar to DOS and I like a "tactic" rpg, despite simple things like flanking an opponent not being there.
But I must say that the writing and character dialogs are very subpar. The main plot around tadpoles inside everyone's head is dreadful and cuts all the emotional (and frankly logical) aspects of the companion's quests. With the sole exception of Lae'zel. I believe the stupid tadpole should have been just a you and Lae thing.
Side quests are very weak to absolutely awful. With very annoying forced cutscenes, and scripted combats. Nothing feels organic it is like everything is a play and the actors are second grade school graduates. I simple research on the writers shown me that they are not truly versed in this and previous works (when they exist) are mediocre.
In short, it is not a good game, easily a very bad D&D experience, akin to have a bad DM unable to do basic redraft of his modules.
