On the Larian side: The entire main plot with a superspecial tadpole is just stupid, because that's not how things work in lore, and every flimsy excuse they provide you with make it even dumber. Like "The Dead Three are behind illithids". It's like saying "Santa Claus is behind BLM" It kinda doesn't compute.
On the WotC side: 4e was supposed to "reboot" the Forgotten Realms, by trashing it and everybody hated it, so 5e was meant to deboot FR, to get the fandom back... and then few years later, WotC rebooted it again, just stealthily. It's a mess.

And now you have a tadpole that does the exact opposite of what the tadpole is supposed to be doing. And the cult of the Absolute (aka Dead Three) are putting those tadpoles into their followers, which is suicidally moronic.
Why are you going through all this insane trouble with tadpoles and illithids, who are unreliable as frick, when you can just put a geas on your followers? Why even do that to your followers anyway? This doesn't benefit the cult in any way.

This story shouldn't happen anyway, because it's creating a mystery from the pieces that don't fit. And I don't think Larian is smart enough and knowledgable about lore enough to make it work.They are taking Dead in Thay and replacing Thayans with illithids, when illithids make no sense in this context. It's as if Larian wanted to make a story about illithids, WotC wanted to make a story about Bhaal, so they mushed the two ideas together and hoped for the best.

So then there is a mother of all coincidences that those tadpoles work so well on the cultists, because otherwise, you are potentially turning your own people into illithids for no reason.

I mean, tadpoles are supposed to turn you into illithids. That is LITERALLY their only function. If you are putting tadpoles into your cultists you: either want to turn them into illithids and kill you, you explicitly know those tadpoles work different somehow, which begs the question why would an illithid create a tadpole that doesn't do what the tadpole is supposed to do, or you are just moronic and hope you somehow luck out in this one in a billion chance that the tadpole is not doing what its supposed to do.

You take is that Larian is misteriously going to provide a satisfactory answer.
My take is that they won't, because they've already objectively written themselves into a corner.
I want to have your naivete/idealism, but Larian are not known for their clever stories and somehow I don't think they'll be able to justify "Bhaal-made magical tadpoles from Netheril" very well. Especially when there are much easier ways to deliver this story.

To add to this, Tadpoles literally cannot survive without eating brains. Illithids cannot survive without eating brains. Tadpoles aren't even intelligent until after they've eaten their first brain and taken control of and mutated the host body, THEN been taught. It literally makes zero sense for Illithids to be doing this, or for any other race to be doing this with Illithid Tadpoles.

The only way for this plot element to make any kind of sense is if what is thought to be a Tadpole isn't actually a Tadpole at all, but something else, but that doesn't track since it was on an Illithid spelljammer and being implanted by Illithids.

I know enough that "this doesn't make sense! we should all have transformed by now!" is repeatedly highlighted by the characters themselves after approximately 10 minutes. So why are you repeating this argument like this is evidence Larian are idiots who never bothered reading a page of lore? EVERYONE knows the lore, or is introduced by it when they actually play the game.

Apparently Larian doesn't, because this isn't how Illithid biology or their life cycle works. I guarantee you there's going to be a retcon for Illithids involved for Larian's game.

Here's a quick breakdown of how it works.
>Illithids appear and are thought to have traveled from the future
>Illithid Elder Brain forms center of Illithid society
>Tadpoles try to exist in Elder Brain pool and avoid getting eaten by it until maturity
>Surviving Tadpoles extracted from the pool by other Illithid and implanted in a suitable host (mostly humanoids, but can be placed in dragons and beholders, among others)
>Tadpole immediately and within hours consumes and replaces the host brain
>Tadpole takes control of the host body and mutates it into a new Illithid
>Illithid is inducted into society and taught by other Illithid
>Illithid must consume cerebrospinal fluid and psionic energy to stay alive (the Tadpole/Brain doesn't produce cerebrospinal fluid, which needs replinishment, and psionic energy is part of their 'diet')
>Illithid dies and their collective experiences are absorbed by the Elder Brain
>If an Ulitharid, can split off from an enclave and form their own, potentially becoming a new Elder Brain
There is no room in this for Larian's plot to work. The Tadpole MUST consume the brain to survive.

Illithids don't do magic, there are some that do, but these are rogues and they are rare. You would never see an Elder Brain involved in anything magical, which you need to produce Tadpoles. If I had to guess, I'd say that Larian is just going to be allowed to fiat a magically inclined Elder Brain masquerading as a cult leader by psionically puppeteering some poor sap as a stupidly elaborate way of taking over the world or something.
