It just sucks cause despite SE's stupidly baffling fricking decisions for the past couple years, they managed to give me a great time with Stranger's Paradise and XVI. Somehow the company that made me fall in love with Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest can still make a game where I can enjoy a game that feels like the games I played and not befuddled with shareholder garbage.
Just sucks they can't get on anybody's good side. I know they definitely earned the ire of their fans but I thought they coulda pulled a Capcom by now. How you kill mobs efficiently in the very early game is Executioner's Cleave or pinning enemies to walls and kicking them off ledges (if it decides to work) by freezing them. Exactly, journos are filtered by DMC or Bayo or NG style J-Action combat because they want you to grow as a player and learn your character's moveset, alongside enemy moveset or quirks(such as how to easily dispatch death scissors or Chaos). Those games are easy(besides NG) for a first playthrough because they want you to get accustomed to fundamentals. Real game starts after you finish the game. Hardest DMC is DMC1 because Dante's moveset is nowhere near as complex as other games even then it's pretty easy if you utilize your DT and use items. First runs are tutorial runs in these games. 2nd runs are the actual game.

Except you learn new moves as you progress, some progression is also tied to the story. Nero doesn't even get his final moves until the end of the game even if you used all your orbs on his skills. Your moveset is mostly static in Dad of War or Souls style games.

In Souls games, it can also change as you progress since you acquire new weapons with different movesets/weapon arts. That's more akin to switching characters, but I'd still consider it a notable change in moveset.
The FromSoft game where that critique really applies is Sekiro, since the variety comes from weapon arts and prosthetics, both of which are heavily limited and compete for resources (on top of taking forever to unlock).

Nero/Dante/Virgil/V plays nothing like each other. As for FFXVI even Clive's eikons plays nothing like each other. Garuda is focused on closing the gaps and fast attacks, Titan is focused on being defensive with parries and staying on the ground, Odin is about being aggressive and Bahamut is about being passive. One feat and few skills for those Eikons changes the gameplay more than any weapon in Soulslike combat does.

So you played on Very Hard for 5 minutes? You get a Runic barely a hour in, and the first boss is one of the copypasted trolls, not Balder. How you kill mobs efficiently in the very early game is Executioner's Cleave or pinning enemies to walls and kicking them off ledges (if it decides to work) by freezing them. None of that is "button mashy", it's entirely based off good tactics.

Exactly, journos are filtered by DMC or Bayo or NG style J-Action combat because they want you to grow as a player and learn your character's moveset, alongside enemy moveset or quirks(such as how to easily dispatch death scissors or Chaos). Those games are easy(besides NG) for a first playthrough because they want you to get accustomed to fundamentals. Real game starts after you finish the game. Hardest DMC is DMC1 because Dante's moveset is nowhere near as complex as other games even then it's pretty easy if you utilize your DT and use items. First runs are tutorial runs in these games. 2nd runs are the actual game.

Except you learn new moves as you progress, some progression is also tied to the story. Nero doesn't even get his final moves until the end of the game even if you used all your orbs on his skills. Your moveset is mostly static in Dad of War or Souls style games.

One feat and few skills for those Eikons changes the gameplay more than any weapon in Soulslike combat does.
