5e D&D is the best D&D has been in a LONG while and I'm saying that without memeing. 4e made D&D into a mobile game where EVERY SINGLE CLASS was broken down to 1 main attack and 2 special attacks (play Neverwinter Online to get a taste of how dogshit 4e was and will forever be a mistake in D&D history). 3e/3.5e made D&D into a convoluted mess of feats and skills with classes having nothing of value because the system was entirely built/based around those feats and skills (fighters as class were literally nothing because abilities were never even a thing and were relegated to simply being the guy who just attacks), literally a system built on a homosexual brainstorming and dropping every imaginable idea only leading to 2 to 3 builds being viable and workable for a class (there is a reason why everyone immediately dropped 3e D&D and went to Pathfinder instead of just continuously playing 3e). And 2e while okay was too simplistic to make anything worthwhile and it will forever be that version where many of the classes were too similar alike and you chose that class simply for labeling terms. 5e condensed the classes to their true forms both RP and combat-wise instead of just applying feats and skills like 3e and actually had unique personifications of the class that was synonymous to their profession.
No edition made rogues be actual rogues, fighters into actual fighters, wizards into actual wizards, and sorcerers into actual sorcerers than 5e.

The problem with 5e is it sucks for a video game. Everything is dumbed down to proficiency bonuses and advantage/disadvantage. Attribute checks replacing fort/ref/will removed a layer of complexity and feats became a meme. In a video game the more complex the system, the more engaging engaging the gameplay.

5e also condenses everything into whether you rolled an 11 or higher on your d20, with little in the way of mitigating bad rolls (such as build features like feats, spells, etc.) At most you can sway things by maybe 15%. At a later point it doesn't even matter as most everything will hit PCs unless they roll a natural 1. It's a joke of a system, even for an OGL d20 system.

First of all, it's in the Players Handbook which would be stupid not to add. And secondly, you're fricking moronic. Adding subclasses for Wizards offers nothing in complexity in terms of mechanics than just boosting the school of magic you've chosen. Thinking there is some big mechanical change and need (like the subclasses for Barbarians and Druids) shows how much of a nerd posing homosexual you are about the game. Even BG1 was able to achieve it by having Wizards with all schools of magic.

Other than that you are really just another mage, but with tons of time management and combat micro to keep your minions controlled.
A proper necromancer should be a separate class imo. One that revolves around life and death magic.
A properly designed game would make the necromancer almost like a dark cleric with lifesteal. The pets would also be more powerful individually to avoid a cluster of micro. Much more chill to have say 5 powerful ressurected archmage pets than 1000 skeletons that die from one aoe spell.

There is something about larians world design that makes it seem more like a themepark than a real place.
That was very much the feel of DOS2, but what I mean with BG4 is more that if feels like Fallout 4... without even being a post-apocalypse game, at least from the screenshots. The green feels faded and the sand and dirt seem inflated, once again reminding me of the dead-feeling asset flip graphics.

Meanwhile the more you styalize, the more timeless you become. And styalized doesn't have to mean cartoony. Dark Souls 2 is a good example of a more styalized graphic design still managing to be gritty.

Most of the eye candy comes from animations anyways, there's a technique in filmmaking they should follow which is adding "movement in the frame", like Akira Kurosawa's. Ghost of Tsushima got it right but even then it still has this sterile AAA feel to it. You know we're in dark times when AAA is considered a negative to enthusiasts.

I feel the same, and I think it's just uncanny valley. Even older games that went for the same "realism" aesthetic larian seems to be trying here don't look as bad. For example, Dragon Age Origins and NWN2 both went for a similar aesthetic we're seeing in BG3, but don't look nearly as unsettling since the low fidelity graphics allowed for your brain to fill in the gaps.

1. there's quite a bit to run into/do up through the fortress in the underdark, but act 1 itself isn't done

They're all pretty great, it just depends on what kind of caster you want to be. A front-line/center caster like Clerics with heal and aid abilities, a tanker like a Druid who can shapeshift or use animals as meatshields, Sorcerers who can tap into metamagics to enhance spells and make them explode and do massive amounts of damage, a Warlock for unique magic abilities gifted by a patron that are powerful in their own way, or a Wizard who can specialize in nearly every school to your liking.
Not necessarily, Necromancers are the only class who can summon armies of undead/zombies/skeletons with animate dead who can wield weapons and can instantly make an undead go under your control with command undead. They are better summoners than conjurers themselves.

Sorcerers without a doubt. They really are the "kill everything with magic" class. The thing is you can also use them as mega-enchanters too to charm or have monsters fight for you since they have insane amounts of Charisma already. Think about what sorcerers are in fiction, they are either death dealers or seducing semen-demon sorceresses. The thing is that they aren't as great in terms of utility like Wizards because Wizards can learn/cast nearly every spell that isn't unique to a class and is scribed on a scroll.
Warlocks are great for being casters with extra cool stuff to work with that is unique to them and being able to get boons, artifacts, and minions with the pact ability.

After two pathfinder games I'm addicted to Magus and it's subclasses, Dex Sword saint specificly just crushes in mele, has mirror images and gigantic AC as long as he's not flanked, and can force enormus crits. While at the same time casting CC, utility, or damage spells.
Going back to playing a "hide in backline and cast twice per combat then use a sling" or resting every combat is going to suck.
Pick sorc, druid, or bard. The others you mentioned are already companion classes.

Okay, so I gave the Act I a shot finally and... its literally DOS2, 5e edition. The story might have more potential, however, yet its also very capeshit in its presentation and I'm not sure if starting the story off with a wannabe Star Wars epic spaceship chse sequence is a good way to start a CRPG. Also the way in which you and Shadowheart magically survive the fall is one-to-one like the start of DOS2. Also I have no clue what the frick is eating up the space in this game. As I said, to me it looks just like DOS2. I dunno, maybe those facial expression you get in conversations (which, for one, add nothing) inflate it, but even then I doubt it. Anyone tried to datamine this thing, at the very least only at surface level to determine where the data is centered? Because for now it seems like they just took their pre-existing level editor for DOS2 and made this.
Anyway, faced with the mindblowing amount of character customizations (ahem, its actually kind of pathetic characrer designer compared to what was hyped up, as it stands, its just DOS2 + hair highlight and greying options), I obviously went on to create a halfling sorcerer who looks like Chuck McGill because yup, its one of those games where its more interesting to make a meme OC due to how bland the nornal options are.
Many of the characters within 1 and 2 are returning to the game from Minsc, Jaheira, and Viconia DeVir (who funnily enough is a Shar Cleric which could be one of the headmasters of the Dark Justiciars which is the cult that Shadowheart is in), the Zhentarim is back, and we don't know the origins or background of The Absolute, but according to what we know from the lore and regarding the head priests of the Church of Kelemvor joining the cult to become one of the true souls for The Absolute, it has something to do with Mrykul and Cyric. ALL of those frickers are tied to the Times of Troubles, ALL of them tied to holding the title of the Lord of the Dead, ALL of them tied to Jergal and his manifestations, ALL of them tied to Bhaal. Kelemvor is the latest god to hold the title of Lord of the Dead within the Forgotten Realms pantheon after Cyric and he probably wants revenge after his homosexual attempt to contain Kelemvor's soul within the Godsbane sword.

I don't play Magic so I can't comment, I can agree a combat wheelchair is dumb as sin though. As for removing evil races, the only thing they actually did was make it so certain races aren't considered evil from birth, which I think is a reasonable change. A lot of people simply played evil race characters as not evil already, because unless you are something completely foreign like abberations are, being born with evil in you just doesn't make a lot of sense.

Most martial classes are better then spellcasters in the early levels. Honestly though the power levels are pretty close, just go with whatever you feel like playing. Current companions are Fighter, Rogue, Cleric, Warlock, and Wizard. Make your PC a Sorc or Bard.

From the datamined stuff back in 2020 it seems like paladins will be sort of like clerics, where you pick a god that determines your alignment and what subclasses you have access to.
That's fine as well, really. So long as they do away with the stupid ass restrictions Paladins always had. They were nothing but a way to restrict roleplaying and character creation. 90% of defining how your Paladin was was essentially "how far in the good/lawful scale are they between zealot and martyr and how long until they fall for one reason or another". The fact now you can choose simply what ideals are you following and decide if you are living up to them or not on a by case basis is 1000% better for roleplay.
The way they seem to be doing it is being a holy warrior for [deity]. So if you're a paladin of Bhaal, for example, you want to glorify him with murder and slaughter. I kind of like it.

We always used a house rule where paladins had to be lawful and of the major alignment of their God. A CG god would have LG paladins, a TN god would have LN Paladins, and everything that could be switched (spells/abilities and shit) to the respective alignment was, though we could never could reach consensus on smite evil/good for neutral paladins should be smite evil, smite non-neutral, or smite chaos.
The only thing that really matters thematically for Paladins is that they are strict and follow the dogma of their God.
I haven't played the d&d stuff but it doesn't make sense to me in Pathfinder how there isn't a Hedge Knight paladin subclass for CG/CN characters. It seems weird that Desna is so popular but she doesn't have her own type of Paladins (hedge knights).

Blackguard was a prestige class for 3e. It was not a kit. It didn't even originally exist in 2e which is where "kits" come from. The only instance of it in 2e was in BG2:EE introduced in the EE.

Your assumption is first that they did it for money. The reason it was not put on Patreon is because it is being funded by WOtC. The Early Access is to both give the fans something to play and to help find problems with game play and bugs they wouldn't otherwise be able to easily play test or that might be overlooked by people in studio.

Took me a while to figure her out too, but now she's just as strong as gale in the group. Give her every healing item you find. Then frick shit up at range with guiding bolt, at close range with inflict wounds, and use healing word (the bonus action heal, it can also revive party members for a BA) and hold person to turn fights in your favor when needed. Be sure to also buff the whole party in the camp with the Aid spell and use bless in fights too. Also give her and gale all your scrolls.

I'm a Sorcerer man myself because I like Metamagic, but there's something to be said for the simple effectiveness of Eldritch Blast.
For party comp I'd probably go Lae'zel/Shadowheart/Astarion. If you go Warlock and set yourself up to be sneaky you might want to swap Astarion for Gael.
What are fun things you do as a Sorc? Sorc seems very straightforward too
Warlock is admittedly just Hex into EB and also using the familiar imp but Sorc doesn't seem a whole lot crazier
If you're a Drow Warlock you can get away with dropping either Lae/zel, Shadowheart, or Astarion since you can melee very effectively and disarm/lockpick.
Honestly, Lolth Drow Warlock seems like the best player-created class and race since.

I'm fine with playing through 1-2 acts then returning later but I don't want to get stuck half way through an un-finished quest chain.
It goes exclusively through the first act. There are a lot of side quests you can do, and one big quest that you finish before the end.
Dont do that you will completely lose context if you return half a year later, plus youll miss all the stuff they have yet to add to the beta.

Why is that when I read these dialogues I can literally imagine a shitlib trying to be clever and funny, but failing miserably at it. Especially when they do the quirky rogue types. How do you figure that? The Bhaalspawn's story is over as a playable character - you've done everything that could be done in BG1 and 2. 3 is over a hundred years later and you're going to go back to Baldur's Gate and see what changes happened to the city and the characters.
Larian is sticking with the game development that they've had the most success with, while branching out in other areas (like player-created characters). I think it'll be a good addition to the series.

I grew up on BG1 and BG2. BG1 was the first game I ever experimented with modding when I was like 12, it got me in to D&D. BG3 is very different, but I still think it's a fun game and I like what there is so far in early access.
