There are exactly 150 gems in each level. There is no leeway. You must get the 2x multiplier for the 150. There are a very few levels with 153 gems or so, but those are rare.

Yesterday, the internet went down for a few hours when my older brother stopped to visit, so I let one of my nephews play Door to Phantomile: Phantasy Reverie edition.
He didn't even notice the low bitrate voices because he was reading the text out loud. He got to 3-2 before he had to go.
He enjoyed the game, thanked me for letting him play a fun videogame, and he said that he wants to play some more next time my brother stops by. I'll keep his save as is on console, since I'm playing through the game on Steam.

The Japanese game is superior because it has the original voice actors returning.

Klonoa is a 40 year old Dream Warrior, armed to the teeth with wind weaponry. He kills at least 6 million Moos in any given Vision-Mission.
Part of the Breezegale Special Forces, he is deployed into a dream, neutralizes the target, and exfiltrates.
Final boss is a duel with his former friend and rogue Dream Warrior Guntz, who he hasn't seen for 20 years. Guntz calls upon his right hand man and explosives expert Pango to pull out a Dream Nuke. The Dream Nuke is fired, killing the dreamer and Klonoa has to escape.
It turns out the dreamer was Klonoa all along, as there are two timelines: Klonoa 1-2-3 Dreaming Klonoa timeline, and the GBA Awake Klonoa timeline. The Dreamer timeline is eliminated. There is only the GBA Awake timeline now.
Klonoa wakes up from a bad dream, just like the intro to Klonoa 1. But no Huepow, and his bed is in the Moon Kingdom. He then walks outside of the house to see the sunset one last time from the moon. He is in a place where sunsets dream. He is standing in the future site of Hyuponia. He will become the King of Sorrow, and recreate the 1-2-3 Dreaming timeline, even if it takes an eternity of pain and tears.

I can't remember correctly but i'm pretty sure they redone the script for the wii remake because of the voice acting and somehow made it even more clunky. The PS1 version was fine. Pretty grade school but fine.

Not really. The switchgate puzzles in the later game only ever require you to move faster. The enemies never really do more other than move left to right and attack you somehow as well.
Part of the charm of Klonoa was that it was a breezy platformer with fantastic characters, art direction, music and a surprisingly dark story. The remakes have kind of gutted the atmosphere and have all sorts of artistic issues so I wouldn't call them better.
The second game gets a bit more interesting in terms of level design and puzzles but you should know what to expect.

Just finished off the collection at 10.5 hours. Might go back some day to get all of the stages with 150 gems. I came close a few times but what tripped me up was the gems that required the multiplier fairy. Fun games but still a bit wilin to ask $40 for two games that aren't up to the visual standard of most other remake collections we've gotten in the past few years, but the games perform well and are stable so that's a plus.
With that price tag it could've been neat if we could have at least maybe bundle in emulations of the GBA platformers to at least have all of the fully translated Klonoa games in one place.
They should have included all the Klonoa games, it's not like that's a lot of games.

The first ending at 8 made me cry and feel sad for a week, the second ending at 11 made me bummed out that I knew what was going to happen next, and I couldn't do anything about it...
I played it the Wii release. Broke boy at the time, so console was hacked to play it. There's a reason it was rated E10.
Quite a bummer, but I've grown to like it over the years. That's the magic of Klonoa.

I love the game, it's a childhood favourite of mine and I will defend the original version to the death, but you're right. It has the gameplay of a fourth gen platformer but with the graphics and perspective of a fifth gen game. Part of why the original game is so memorable and revered because Namco had very talented artists, musicians, and programmers in the 90s. And most of the people who worked on Klonoa actually had limited to no experience with 3D games at all.
