I like that you can set the fights at 200% speed and remove the info screen afterwards. It's basically hard mode and also makes the combat less slow, which was the original game's only real flaw later on

"Joke" meaning the localizer is offended by what the original says.
It's easy to make yourself believe that and I get why but it could also simply mean that the localizers didn't want others to feel offended or believe the game actually promotes the idea of a wife who literally has no will of her own. 99% the people who get upset about that change probably don't even know what the Japanese original says

that's the entire fricking problem. not only is it not their call to begin with and betraying the original intent of the character by adding shit that was never there, but they chose to express it through the perspective of the main character, making him out to be a liberal feminist homosexual and unrelatable to the overwhelmingly straight male player demographic of these games.

BK is definitely the more timeless and more unique game with the better pacing and accessibility, I'd say. No shitty random encounters and generic turn-based fights like in SoA, unique melancholic OST and atmosphere, tight level design and neat little puzzles and interactions everywhere
Sega games also got overrated like crazy back in the day for whatever dubious reasons, which might be another factor

Yeah, it's quite underappreciated. Only the beautiful backgrounds by Honne (Chrono Cross) probably are no longer as impressive as they used to be, but otherwise I'd still call it a little masterpiece that nonchalantly fixed so many issues most JRPGs still suffered from back then while offering a unique world and a great spin on turn-based combat with cards that are always satisfying to collect and draw

Just emulate the originals. They run perfect on Dolphin and unlike the demaster they have English VA. The atrocious English voice acting was a large part of their charm.

The voice acting itself wasn't atrocious at all. It (just like the Jap VA) just had the weird echoing...which could have been intentional (you're basically in the game but in a different dimension) and indeed part of its charm

99% of JRPGs are shit that aggressively waste your time with random encounters, turn-based combat and next to zero level interactivity. Baten Kaitos was one of the few exceptions, found a perfect solution for most of these issues and is neatly paced with an amazing world throughout
