Battle Network

It's funny but Battle Network 6 is probably the most rushed game of the franchise but maybe the best one, the gameplay is faster, lots of chips and feels like the developers just wanted to make a game where you wouldn't be hold back anymore.

>Chip progression
Unlike previous games where you spent the beginning without enough power to even kill mettaurs, here in your first minutes you will get chips to easily clean the screen, you will be constantly upgrading
>Chip selection
They made sure to keep the best chips from BN4 and BN5 and made sure the new ones are worth it, lots of chips that hits multiple enemies or do area damage, they also added the tag system for easier PAs.
>Navi Customizer
Aside from having the compression codes in-game so it's not cheating anymore (aside from BN5 that gave you audible hints), bugfix is now essential since you can literally place programs off the grind
>No restraints
Wanna use the same mega chip several times? Ok
Wana change forms without needing for an elemental chip to show up? Ok
Wanna just frick shit up? Beast out
>Fast paced mini games and puzzles
Instead of you know spending several minutes trying to find the correct ninja program to the point it was so annoying the US version of BN5 even removed one of the maps
>Bosses are actually fun
No aquaman from BN3, no Cloudman from BN5, no dumb gimmick bosses, even the last boss this time isn't really annoying requiring you to remake half of your folder just to have chips that will hit him.
>Very little grinding
While a lot of shit is expensive in this game, you will be getting a lot of money and bugfrags, in-battle items are not so annoyingly placed and most chips can get around it anyway

Also play the japanese version, there are translation patches.

      >shame it's over
There's always a chance it could come back. Capcom put out a survey recently asking customers what series they want to see more games from and the top two responses were Mega Man and Dino Crisis. Also, Capcom released the Battle Network collection last year, and as of the figures they reported on last year the collection is the second best selling game in the franchise (the highest selling is 11).

Given that not only do people want to see more Mega Man, but that EXE is extremely popular and draws mass sales numbers (both historically and in the modern era) it is extremely likely that Capcom may decide to revive the franchise.

I forgot to mention but also Capcom stated around the time that 11 released that they were monitoring the sales numbers of the various collections and using that info to decide which subseries to make sequels to. The classic collections sold gangbusters so they gave us 11.

Cool, my idea that will piss off /vr/ is that it's a 3D reimagining of BN 1-3. The battlefield should be akin to kingdom hearts, with a small circle to run inside, the radius of attacks are highlighted a split second before they land on your field while you run and sommersault around.
a sequel could cover BN 4-6, and finally a brand new game that could serve as a cross over and beginning of Starforce.

Yep, and it is a shame I just discovered them. On the other hand, there are like 6/7 games of them with tons of contents. I'm just playing 2 after beating 1, glad they improved the internet, it was a fricking labyrinth in one.

I love 6 but 5 is probably my fav. As long as we can all agree that 4 is an awful, awful, game, all is fine in the world.

Make sure to play Star Force series if you haven't. They're more simple since cards don't have codes anymore but the combat is quite fun.

Holy shit Starforce is so good. The anime too, it needs to be remastered, and the series needs to continue. Make a new game Capcom.

The main issue with 5 is progression, you spend 90% of the game with the same chips, then you open the nebula gates and is allowed to upgrade, Liberation missions are a cool concept but badly balanced, having enemies from both sides is terrible.

I replayed 3 in the legacy collection and I just realized that I hate it. All the backtracking, needing Custom style to get certain chip codes, and Press.

BN3 has a lot of cool ideas that were not so well executed, it was the first game with the navi customizer so they didn't realize how annoying it was to keep switching programs, it was also the first game they started the bullshit of having hundreds of codes for exclusive shit that you will never see any hint of in-game.

It's not only custom style, unless you spend a lot of bugfrags, you will need mega style for V4s, I honestly don't understand why they just didn't allow you to choose in the menu which style you want active, I also dislike how some styles basically limit your use of programs.

The game also abuses too much of +damage chips, aquaman easily destroys most bosses, if you want an easy life with normal enemies, just pick Plantaman and two reg+5 programs and put him as the regular chips, plantman damages even enemies with armor and there a lot of good P chips.

While the game has a lot of content, it's not well balanced, collection is annoying, Serenade is a gimmick boss you won't get damaged when you realize the trick, time trials with custom folders are a joke, even Bass GS is really easy, only Alpha V3 is hard and well 90% of bosses just break when you use area grabs and get them stuck on one panel, Bass GS literally can't attack you anymore.

Though something good from 3 that never returned where gigachips like folderback and navi recycler.

Folderback was broken as frick, that's why

Navi Recycler would recycle damage bonuses which IMO is even more valuable, what really made folderback broken is that it would refresh your regular chip including full custom and then it would refresh itself too, so it was too easy to get the chips you wanted.

BN3 has a lot of problems with being unbalanced, but that's why i like to say it is the X6 of Battle Network and also love it so much. It is just broken both for the game and for yourself.
Getting the Variable Blade early-game and flying through the entirety of the main campaign using Elemental Sonic Boom combo, spamming a lot of different P.As to the point they nerfed the use of it on BN4 onwards, Support NCPs being pretty easy to use and also being nerfed later to make the player choose one or other later, the last really well done edgy BN, the ExCodes, almost every chip being good to use like BN6, Folderback and some player bugs like the 11th chip slot glitch making Hub what Bass is story-wise, the ultimate terror of the cybernet.

        >Wanna just frick shit up? Beast out

Ah now that's not quite right.
BN6 had it right where the MB of the chip decided how many of a given chip you were allowed to insert into your folder.
        >1-19 MB - Up to 5 copies
        >20-29 MB - Up to 4 copies
        >30-39 MB - Up to 3 copies
        >40-49 MB - Up to 2 copies
        >50+ MB - 1 copy allowed
        >Up to 5 Mega Chips (expandable via NCP)
        >Up to 1 Giga Chips (expandable via NCP)

It got rid of the restriction where you couldn't have duplicate mega chips, because BN1 and BN2 just let you have 5 of the same Navi chip and players would do shit like having five GateManV3 chips (or GateMan *) for the Gater PA.
BN3 changed it so you couldn't have the same mega chip twice, which wasn't so bad because the navi chips overall were really great and went up to V4 (with V5 Giga chips)

They really over-reacted to HeroSwrd being broken as shit in BN1 anyway.
In BN2, they made it a secret chip and made it so that it only works when using Normal Style (not even Hub Style can use it).
In BN3, they made it a mega chip and reduced the attack power to 180 (from 200), so you can only have one to use in an underwhelming EvilCut PA. At least any style could use it this time.

I literally just finished BN3 100% (both Blue and White) this evening, and yeah it's broken as shit and that's what makes it fun.
VarSwrd elemental sonic boom spam is absurd in how good it is if you can pull it off. I was using it to S-rank Bass Omega in the end-game battles. My folder was P-code focused with StepCros, PlantMan v4, Punk, Plasma3 with AreaGrab, Elec+30, IceStage *. The StepCros is mostly needed as an option to remove Bass' LifeAura as most everything else is a multi-hit chip.
BN3 blue makes it easier to stuff your folder with VarSwrd due to the shops stocking it. Fewer shops in BN3 White have VarSwrd available.

Yeah, I forgot about this, though the system itself fits well with how powerful each upgrade of the chips are, after all you can easily pick water chips (avaliable as soon Blastman is defeated) and easily S Rank even his SP with a good time enough for a 200+ multi target chip at the start of the game.

I used a B folder to defeat Bass Omega, spammed area grab and metagels to get him stuck and used bubbleman with +chips and Protoman for the Hero PA and destroying his barrier, he didn't hit me once.

      >All the backtracking
Yeah, the lack of dedicated dungeons for some bosses hurts it a little.
BubbleMan and FlamMan don't get dedicated dungeons like FlashMan, BeastMan, PlantMan, and to an extent DesertMan
Their approach to using yet-unexplored sections of the internet as dungeons for BubbleMan and FlamMan is handled a lot better than the FreezeMan scenario in BN2 however.

      >Needing Custom style to get certain chip codes
The style grinding is a bit much, forcing you to acquire new styles to get 100% content earned in-game.
You'll grind out a TeamStyle change just to get the V4 navi chips, and ideally won't aim for that style until post-game specifically because of DarkMan, JapanMan, and ProtoMan.

I ended up doing a lot of style change grinding just for the legacy collection achievements, and finishing on AquaCustom was a pain because when you re-roll a style change, you only re-roll the style and not the element. You're locked into that current next element until you accept a style change.

      >Press.
It hurts that the Legacy Collection release had zero QoL changes for issues like this. All it needed was one extra optional quest or means to convert Press from an NCP to a permanent key item.

Also, calling him JapanMan and not YamatoMan internationally was dumb.

TeamStyle is not really necessary, just use the bugfrag trader, for people who don't know traders have a great chance to give a chip you don't have or from an code you don't have (as long it's part of the chips they can give you), also the chip order before 4 will give you more stock if you use the trader with a chip of any code, this was changed in the legacy collection so 4-6 works the same.

That combination of elements blocked me from 100%ing the game back when it was new. I had started grinding for TeamStyle only to learn that I'd need a friend to do the exact same thing as well and just quit with 83 mega chips out of 85.

I played through BN 4.5 with the translation and combat patches during lockdown, when we all moved to working from home and I had a bit more time at home for quick sessions.

If you appreciate the game for its realtime elements and the challenge of managing your time navigating the map to reach your destinations, it's actually a pretty good game as long as you recognise it's focused on progression over time.

I also really appreciate how OSS ties the earliest and latest points in the series together.
The QoL changes to BN1 in OSS are also great, actual * code chips, some rebalancing, and still letting you save-scum the chip traders.

Lotto numbers are literally required for 100% completion in MMBN3.
The only way to get the four mega chips needed for the Master Style program advance is using lotto numbers distributed outside of the game.
You also can't get the Muramasa chip without lotto number, chip order, or getting very lucky with the bug frag trader.
Also have fun not being able to spin red, blue, green, or white navi customizer parts.

      Anonymous

Lotto numbers are fair game because not being able to spin anything other than pink/white pieces is absolute horseshit. Honestly they should have either allowed you to spin everything from the get go or design everything around not spinning at all, unlocking spinning per color is the worst possible design choice.
Everything else is definitely cheating, except for compression in BN6 since that at least hint at it being a thing, for the others though it is absolutely just straight cheat codes that you could only get from a guide.

I always felt that the battle network series embraced the sharing of information and knowledge, and that they stop being cheats when everyone has access to them, and it puts you at a disadvantage to not use them (especially in pvp netbattles).

The systems in the games are 100% designed to be taken advantage of, that's the fun.

I've been meaning to play this series for a long time. Is the online on that switch collection still active or should I just emulate these games?

Legacy collection on Switch is definitely the best way to play these games.
Online still works, comfy handheld play, you can play it unfiltered and with good button mapping options.
It adds in online functionality for battles and trading in all games, and local network play is supported too for in-person netbattles and trading.
It has an optional "bustermax" mode that lets you deal 100x damage with basic buster shots, but I'd recommend avoiding using it to really appreciate how well designed the battle system is.

There's also Discord bots you can use to request chip data etc, letting you get any chip you need in lieu of playing with real people. You'll still need to do online net battles for the games that have secret chips as part of 100% postgame requirements though.

A shame they didn't just give the games the WiiU VC treatment where you got all of the multiplayer bullshit easily, at least as a toggle.

      Anonymous

If you want to emulate it at GBA there's a patch at RockmanEXEzone to apply the WiiU VC unlocks of multiplayer content at the GBA roms, but iirc only for the japanese versions (and i only know about BN6 having a translation patch because the english version literally cuts content from the post-game).

        Anonymous

The ROMs extracted from Legacy Collection work on GBA emulators and flashcarts anyway, however the ROMs themselves are mostly unmodified from what I understand.

I extracted the GBA ROMs from the Switch version of Legacy Collection, and changes you might expect to see in the ROM aren't present if you run them directly.
Things like the Spooky Virus / Invis chips, where the red cross is changed to a green cross.
Or an added line of text saying "You can't set records if you use Buster Max mode" when talking to time trial navis in the secret area of BN3.

The reason for this is that the games all use the Japanese ROMs as the basis for the games, but also include the English ROMs to selectively patch in other bits of data like the game scripts and a few graphics that need to be in English.

I mention this because of the cut post-game content in BN6. It's intact in the Japanese release, so they use that as the basis and provide a new translation for the English mode.
It would mean if you extract and play the English ROM, it'll probably still be missing the post-game area, and crash if you try to use any of the cut battle chips like Hakushaku.

        >Rockman X.exe
        >As a new net emerges, old navis are now stuck at simple jobs
        >Sigma virus take over the net
        >Megaman gets the X program installed and can acess the new net
        >Old chaud uses Magma Dragon.exe

They already covered the Zero Virus in Network Transmission. Colonel and Iris are the few other things from the X series to get adapted in Battle Network, as the timeline where Dr Light specialised in networking never gave rise to the robots that would frick things up for centuries.
Canonically, the virus problem is solved forever at the end of BN6 and network society flourishes with the eradication of netcrime.

The viruses that show up centuries later in Star Force are literally from outer space.

So the official Wii U VC releases did things like
            >Give you network exclusive chips when accessing network menu
            >Adjust the colors for more pleasant viewing on modern displays
            >Make e-reader content built into the game where applicable

The Wii U + restoration patches you can find on Rockman EXE Zone do quite a lot, I can't remember it all, but the most significant one is that the Rockman EXE 6 ROMs are patched to have an English translation (with the majority of script lifted from the MMBN6 ROMs), as well as optional patches to apply the Wii U VC changes, unlock all e-reader content, etc.

The ROMs extracted from Legacy Collection work on GBA emulators and flashcarts anyway, however the ROMs themselves are mostly unmodified from what I understand.

The only thing I don't understand from that EXE 6 patch is that they changed the virus breeder rewards to be the USA one with the exception of the last one and made the old rewards avaliable by lotto numbers

That's because the international release cut out the Boktai crossover content, which included battle chips for Django and HackJack.

Django3 was the reward for the final virus breeder in the original Japanese release, but internationally it was changed to something else.

This was an issue for the initial release of Legacy Collection, because they forgot to change the virus breeder rewards back to the JP version and make Django3 obtainable. It was the only way to obtain it in a strictly single-player run of the game (might be in chip trader but not sure).

There's also another bug at LC of bn6 where you can't accept a BBS request before getting all Mega chips to pick up Anubis at Greveyard1 or you will be locked out forever from doing all quests and fighting Protoman FZ.
It's strange how they fixed somethings like the 11th slot glitch from BN3 but didn't fixed others like this one or the Django3 chip.

If you're referring to the quest that asks you to perform the PoisonPharoah PA, yeah that's actually an issue in the patched BN6 ROM that adds in the e-reader content.

The BBS request is one that would be added to the game via e-reader, but they didn't account for the player requiring access to the Anubis chip and the only means in-game to get it without trading or comparing libraries.
Due the way you can unlock the BBS request, it lets you accept the request from very early in the game rather than locking it to post-game or some other sensible requirement.

              various methods.

(WIIU):The cias with this in the file name are the WIIU eshop versions of the battle network games,
but with a fan patch to the original gba games that gives them the various changes the eshop versions
made. Some include, giving multiplayer or event chips by going to the menu, getting other version chips,
bass cross is available without needing to cheat and much more. You can get a more detailed description of
all the changes by going to the link below.

(Woodman Fixed):This is a patched rom of Blue Moon that fixes the glitched woodman scenario and makes no
              other changes to the game.

(Normal Gameplay):Patched rom of 4.5 where instead of the very gimmicky controls of the original, it now
has the normal gameplay you expect out of a battle network game.

(Restored): Patched roms of battle network 6 that restores all the cut content from the international release
;basically turns the game into a translated version of the japanese release. It is considered the definitive
way of playing these games. If you want to know all the changes check out the link below.

          >Canonically, the virus problem is solved forever at the end of BN6 and network society flourishes with the eradication of netcrime.

I know this is why I suggested there is a new more advance net now, so the Iris and Colonel system create by Hikari and Willy don't work anymore

Legacy Collection doesn't have roms; it's source ports.

There are bootable GBA ROMs with a .srl extension extractable from Legacy Collection anyway.

Actually, I'm gonna check if the Zero & ZX Collection has ROMs too. I know that one's definitely supposed to be source ports.

Couldn't find anything resembling GBA or NDS ROMs in there.

It's nice having ZX and ZX Advent's cutscenes in high quality formats though, instead of being bitcrushed to 256x192 resolution.

Legacy Collection has mod support carrying over from the GBA versions specifically because they use the GBA ROMs as their basis.

There are also some mods that target the collection's enhancements, like pixel font restoration, extra video output options that give sharper pixels, better display on SteamDeck, etc.

If you are going to play BN1 or BN2 use powerups like this
    >Everything on attack first
    >Second on speed
    >Third on charge
The reasoning is that the buster already gets really fast if you are close to enemy, so early in the game attack is more valuable, charge is bordeline useless

      Anonymous

BN2 needs to prioritise charge speed.
Your power attacks for your styles is independent of your attack or speed.
Attack only boosts the buster's charge shot for Normal and Hub style.

When you have power attacks avaliable you will already start getting better chips to the point they are trivial, I am currently playing BN2 on hard mode.

Yeah, if you're playing any BN game properly, you don't need the buster at all.

WoodV3 in BN2 does have a very nice 160 damage attack though, holds a boss in place for a follow-up attack too.

Cool games. Some great music throughout. I always thought it was cool Mega Man's helmet had a face guard in battle.

This one doesn't have a hi-res version available due to how they only produced art for the tradeable chips, or those that can be earned as netbattle rewards like certain secret giga chips.

BN4 was rushed, but its still better than BCC.

BN4 as a whole is deeply flawed with a lot to resent, but at its core the battle system is thankfully still fun. It's just the progression is ass and takes a lot of the fun out when you can only get tier 1 chips on your first run, tier 2 on your second, tier 3 on your 3rd onwards.

        > but at its core the battle system is thankfully still fun.

I disagree. Look at every new virus from BN4, there isn't a SINGLE one that is fun to fight, they all have obnoxious patterns and un-fun ways to dispose of them.

I feel like they over-reacted to "haha VarSwrd go brrrr" in BN3, and introduced more viruses that are harder to land hits or require multiple hits.
Walla's fangs block a lot of your shots, but it's otherwise just mostly stationary and open to hits.

i think its more related to the chips youre given are awkward to use and numerically weak(except time bomb) and cant really dispatch viruses quickly.

It sorta goes hand in hand, the viruses have weird/obnoxious patterns, so do the chips associated to them

I felt the same way about Star Force 2, many of the virus encounters are big time wasters because they have long invulnerability phases or short vulnerability windows.

It's a common link in the least popular MMBN/SF games that they have the worst random encounters. SF2 also has the worst encounter rate in the series.

                >Starforce 2
Yes the worst of the random encounters in the MMSF series goes to this one. especially late in the game. Despite this, I think that Starforce 2 has its high points. There's the ability to accept tribe cards, OOPart searching, changes to the battlefield aesthetic, the improved Wave road overworld, and most of the music. SF2 would have been at least slightly better had
                1) The Tribes had a 4th contender that sailed the seas known as the "Pirate Tribe" (Should have been Zerker x Ninja and Pirate x Saurian), along with some mention or two of them having been taught most of their noise wave abilities by the AMians in the distant past.
                2) Tribe cards had more variety in their effects.
                3) Make Geo's dialogue less like that of a simp and give Zack more development as to who he is.

Agreed, and i even played it the easy way by spamming Air Hockey the entire campaign with sometimes using Gun Del Sol chips.

Is it possible to use saves from the Legacy Collection with GBA roms?

Modern AI stuff isn't aware, lacking a continuous thought process. It's just input/process/output like most programs.
Most AI is just on standby until it receives a prompt to produce text, image, or sound output.

NetNavis have something called an "emotion simulation program" iirc, so they can have actual personalities that can grow and form meaningful relations and connections with humans.
It's actually more advanced than the first generation of robot masters in the classic timeline, that sort of thing wouldn't emerge until X was developed, and the reploids derived from him.

        >continuous thought process.

It'll need new hardware, something purpose built.
GPUs work by virtue of them being thousands of cores working together like the synapses of a brain to create links and identify patterns.

Great series. Just replayed 1 and just finished 2 through the new collection. I also had 5 back in the days
I 100% 1 but I don't think I will 2. Honestly, they're kind of a nightmare to 100%, on top of requiring you to S rank all bosses now, christ, I'm afraid this isn't the only game I have. Otherwise, is 100% for the rest just as demanding?

      Anonymous

Getting all completion stars/badges gets worse as the series goes on due to needing to get stuff from multiplayer, chiptrader hell, or worse grinding bugfrags after 3.
3 has the most raw stuff to do, 4 requires two NG+ to get all virus versions and BMDs (god help you if you miss a BMD/version chip and need to do more loops), 5 has hideous bugfrag grinding + needing to backtrack after opening postgame gates, and 6 is just kinda not finished.

I've heard that the collection actually includes the other versions chips from the "Download" menu it has. But yeah, that sounds pretty dreadful, I think I'll just enjoy the games until completely and part of the post game until I don't want to play anymore
Trying to do 1 just broke me last time, it was a massive chore and I ended up having to check netspace RNG steps manipulation for bosses ghost spawns and yeah, what a nightmare

I'd suggest you do try what you can with 3 but don't sweat the others, you don't need 100% completion to fight most of the postgame bosses.
