BFBC2 is my favorite, too, even though I've played since BF1942 launch. I'd have to say in terms of QoL and leap in fun factor, the best would have to go to BF2. It made the entire "battlefield" experience cohesive and defined. Plus, always fun to have planes with bullet AoE the size of a townhouse.
BFBC2 dialed the fun factor down into perfection, and they've been failing to reclaim that honor ever since. I still dream of feeling the absolute fury from a wookie nest getting demo'd once again. Never again had a game let me shit on snipers with such impunity.

Why do battlefield "fans" choose to play a large scale combined arms game but then cry about the combined arms part (even though infantry only servers exist anyway)?
it's fair to cry about them being overpowered when they have infinite ammo, can sprint indefinitely, can regenerate armor, have a 3rd person camera, have thermals, have infinite countermeasures, and can turn their cannons as fast as an infantry player (in the case of land vehicles)
battlefield 1943 had infinite ammo for both infantry as well as vehicles and no one cried or cared
Yeah it's not like the devs gave up on making proper combined arms maps with terrible layouts that favor vehicle users instead of both infantry and vehicles....
You can just not play those maps, ideally some maps should favor vehicles since it changes up the gameplay somewhat.

I absolutely agree with you that "vehicle maps" should have enough fun vehicles for everyone. But honestly Golmud is not even that bad. I'd rather play 100 games on Golmud than a turd like Siege of Shanghai.
If you don't want to use a vehicle then it is that bad. The only viable flags for infantry are A & B (maybe C if you get lucky), and even then the armor and air vehicles usually bring the buildings down to rubble after 10 minutes so you can't hide anywhere.
Ignoring the morons who only want metroshit, complaints about vehicle/map balance are often valid. And the critical part of COMBINED ARMS is that both infantry and vehicles are part of it. When balance devolves to "get in the tank/plane/heli first or get farmed" then that is not COMBINED ARMS. morons acting like getting in a vehicle entitles them to 100-0 is not COMBINED ARMS.
