Doesn't seem like anyone else is contesting that suggestion. Best Buy has the Companion 2 series III for $150USD. It'll take a bit to save up, I hope they are shielded.

Companion 2 looks good for the size it is, but there is no way those speakers are producing anything at 40hz or so. I would recommend getting a subwoofer with them, or look for something else that either has a sub or two full-range speakers.

What I don't understand is why someone would need that many games.
I get having a box or two of games but this is just excessive as you won't even be able to play it all.

          >you won't even play it all
I hate when people say this, because it completely ignores how old video games actually are, and assumes people are already in hospice.

I'm 32, have been into games since the N64, And have been thrifting and yardsaling for games since 2006. That alone is 23 years, coupled in with the fact that we play the game as soon as we buy it, that gives plenty of time to play everything.

This also applies to people who think anyone is paying eBay price for their games. Nobody does that.

Old sources generally look like shit on modern flat screens to begin with. My laserdisc player and VCR also look mournful. I don't use them enough to also want a CRT in my living room, though. I will be curious to see how the output looks on the upcoming Analogue3D (for Nintendo 64). Even HDMI-modded N64s look kinda sad.

                >>Old sources generally look like shit on modern flat screens to begin with
yes, but i still try my best to mitigate it by not using my tv/avr's internal scaler via component
my setup for older stuff is component>component switcher>scaler>avr>tv
as long as you set it up right, there should be no additional input lag in the passthrough and the final result should look much better
i wouldn't recommend it if you only have 1 console though...

Yeah, I just let my TV do the scaling. Sony has the best image processing on the market, and I don't have the inclination to get a dedicated scaler.

That's the mainstream, current day casual gamer. Anyone on the retro board is by definition not normie tier. We're more closely related to those obsessive weirdos that only watch movies made before the invention of CGI, and have huge collections of I Dream of Jeannie dolls neatly arranged in a cabinet lined with fabric from Barbara Eden's panties.

Sorry man. I don't make the rules. In the dating scene it's just not cool to be retro.

That is the norm for most zoomers. I'm 45, and most young people, including my five nephews and three nieces have no interest in anything from the past because it's "old man stuff." They don't have the attention span for it and they are incapable of seeing its value.

I didn't say normal was good. I said it was the current perception. Marvel slop IS, whether we like it or not, "cool and normal" to most people, while older movies are regarded as bizarre, awkward silly crap from a dead generation that no longer has any relevance. They laugh at the Xenomorph because it looks "stupid and old." Star Wars is "funny." Terminator is "boring." Road Warrior is "dull." It's the same with the vast majority of gamers today, which is why this board gets about 1% of the traffic that Ganker does.

Point still stands: no culture considers retro artifacts to be "cool" or normal. What is cool and normal are always seen in context to the current zeitgeist, even if that zeitgeist is slop. I wish that wasn't the case, but that's why we have niche boards for the 1%.

Face it. We are not cool by consensus. We are not normal by consensus. We are old and decrepit weird nerds who value things 99% of people -- including gamers -- no longer value. And that's okay. You can't force the world to like what it doesn't like -- but you can laugh at them behind their backs for having no taste.

In the context of dating, women in general aren't into games. Those that are are likely to be into normal ones, so the dating pool is inherently limited if you want to date on the basis of shared passions.

This is quite accurate. I'm 29, and I've heard a friend -- who is actually slightly older than me -- comment that he can't watch movies from before about 1990 because they're "unrelatable". As if a world that existed a merefive years before we were born was some kind of foreign experience.

On the other hand, my neighbor's is about 15 years old and absolutely loves old games, I've set him up with emulators of old systems and let him borrow from my own library, and it's great to see someone young pick up on the hobby.

I guess the takeaway is that while it's only a niche 1%, there do still seem to be plenty of young people who are finding their way into retro stuff.

Nah.. hardly worth one tbh.. the single player game is pretty fun though.. and I got a Dreamcast out of the deal. That was my main objective.

now if there was a way setup two dreamcasts with lan adapters with their own displays and two copies of this game, then maybe sure. It's a lot of stuff to get just for this one game but it would certainly be unique and probably fun. I'm uncertain if this feature is even supposed on dreamcast.. if it is you'd probably have to know japanese how to set up the networking. Goodluck with that.

Not sure how else I can improve this, aside from moving the HOMM3 boxes and making more space for the other consoles and their accessories. Can't decide if I should get a Saturn or if I should build a MiSTer, since it can also do Neo-Geo and I'm sure as heck not about to buy an actual one. Extremely jealous of anyone that has PVMs and also lives in an NTSC region. I don't want PAL shit, so I'm forced to import and deal with taxes and gayass customs.

Personally I think the PS1 Classic is garbage and I'd say everyone needs to own one fat PS2 at least, but that's just me. You can definitely make space for one. If you can't make space for a PS1 as well you can build a MiSTer I guess. You can also definitely throw that shitxbox away. What do people even use those for? You can also put shelves on the wall to hold things, or build some kind of stand to hold your turntable.

I would have preferred the fat ps2. I chose the slim because i was running out of space in my compactified setup. A few of those consoles were gently bought including the ps2 slim. So I only have a handful of games for that one.. dreamcast and gamecube are also new to me.

A nice thing about the ps2 is that similar to the Xbox, games are cheap to collect. Currently there's plenty of $10 games to pick up for those systems.. . Snes and genesis carts on the otherhand get steep quick. So are dreamcast games.. for that I definitely want to find a way to play burned copies. Saturn is expensive af too. Unless you buy aquazone. That's a cheap saturn game.

      what is that dreamcast controller?

That is the twin stick controller for virtual-on oratorio tangram. Fun game.. too bad the online multiplayer is defunct.. its apparent to me that's what this game was really meant to do. The controller is still great. I plan to use a PC adapter to play all manner of games which require robotron 2084 controls.

I bought the dreamcast in a bundle with this game and contoller. Couldn't resist as I was always was a fun of virtua on fro. The arcade days. It's also convinent to buy a japan region consoles at a nice discount.. the downside, my dreamcast doesn't play north American games where I live.. gotta get a boot disk.

Nice. I've been modding my dreamcast a lot but I haven't tried out any of the gimmick controllers yet. I'd get the light gun but I hear they only work on CRTs and I use a 4:3 VGA setup

I actually like this. It's well organized.

      This is not a battlestation.

Why not? It's got John Wick vibes.

Because it's a collector's display. That guy is not battling with it.
