>Make a poison gym
>Give all the trainers psychic and ground types instead (only 3 out of 14 of their mons are poison and they're all arbok)
What was the thought process here

Lol I remember thinking that grass and bug were weak to psychic because of this.

I used to think Ghost was weak to Psychic

This was the worst thing about gen 1.
        >make psychic type
        >make ghost type to counter it, the ONLY counter to it
        >somehow the code is so bad they accomplished the opposite
        >psychic is immune to ghost
Imagine my shock when I got to Mortys gym in gen two and my Kadabra proceeded to get bodied.

Wait, Psychic was immune to Ghost in Gen 1? I thought because the only ghosts in Gen 1 were also Poison type they got bodied by Psychic pokemon anyway?

Nah Ghosts straight up resisted Psychic moves as though they were Normal moves.

Psychic's full-on immune to Ghost Moves in Gen 1 due to a programming mishap, yes.
Not that it particularly mattered when the only offensive Ghost Moves were fricking LICK and Night Shade.

Their argument was that Pokemon was originally meant to be a SP traditional JRPG, with no effort put into competitive viability.

                >Their argument [headcanon]
fricking lol, they never gave an argument on this
Dragon and Ghost not having moves is just a thing and that's it

Dragons were supposed to be like an end-game boss, difficult to overcome unless you happened to do some exploring and pick up a Jynx or Lapras or Seel. Ghosts were meant to resist Psychic to give you a bit of a counter against Sabrina without allowing you to just walk all over her.

                >resist Psychic
dealing SE damage isn't resisting, but I get your point

muh ninja gym. The duel poison is likely because there are lots of poisonous animals irl. Were any of the gym/elite 4 specialties lost in translation? Like Agatha is a poison type trainer with the 3 ghosts and 2 other poison types. Granted, she is named in the USA for Agatha Chrystie so poison makes sense.
It could also be change in design from the alpha/beta. IE Erika's red sprite makes it look like she was supposed to be a ghost type gym

    >Be poison type
    >Only get poison sting
    >Be bug
    >Dont get any bug type move
    What were they thinking?

they were thinking that bugs and poison types were too strong and types like fire, water, and electric were too weak so they balanced this by giving the latter types powerful viable STAB.

their gyms were swapped in development
    >Psychic-type trainer gives the Marsh badge
    >Poison-type trainer gives the Soul badge
    Think about it.

theres a theory that Sabrina and Koga were swapped around, hence their gym badge names not really matching their type which explains their gym puzzles too, invisible walls makes sense for a psychic gym and a teleporting puzzle goes with ninjas

Those make sense for either. Teleport is a psychic move.
