I'm playing through it, stopped at chapter 12 and played episode prompto since it's recommended. I hated this DLC. Prompto is better to use as a switchable character than he is on his own, his story isn't as interesting or interestingly put together as people had me believe, and frick those snowmobile controls and that final turret section. Fricking terrible stuff.
I'm glad I'm returning to the main game. Shit feels rushed at this point but weirdly enough there's some dramatic effect that's working for me. Feels pretty much like an end of the world story literally and figuratively, let's say, as the group's dynamic is breaking down as well as the world order it seems. I already know how it ends as I've been spoiled but I'm still bracing myself for Insomnia, plus I don't really know the particulars.
Just finished chapter 13. It was tediously long, but the sense of isolation and exploring an opressively industrial environement felt genuinely mastered. Being tedious was the point I suppose. I don't mean that in the "it's supposed to be shit" kind of way. There's definitely biblical themes that go beyond the sterotypical Jesus allegories, and I felt like the whole industrial empire with evil machinery is part of it yet I can't recall the exact concept it would hail from. Babylon, I suppose? I've only bits and pieces of the book of revelation's narrative and imagery to memory, but this seems like it would be it.

I mean there are tons, most of the game is in need of improvement, the game plays fine(although classes are slowly becoming more dumbed down), the story/music is entertaining, and Trials are general tons of fun, but XIV normally tries something, then leaves it as is for years without expanding/improving/fixing it for years, and players will ignore the issue, say it's understandable because yoshi-p cried on stream or something, or will tell you that the systems/content don't matter or that you shouldn't use them, it's a little asinine.

Not really related, but personally I wish they'd create a system where at the very least, you're allowed to use all the abilities you've unlocked on that job during scaled down roulette runs. I get so bored and tired of being tossed into an ARR dungeon and losing more than half of my rotation. I don't care about the damage I do, but if I had the option to keep the same damage output but do my full 90 rotation and keep myself awake during the run, I'd be happier.

There are definitely things they could do, but I do think the general content output is pretty good compared to its competitors. The shop is starting to bug me, however.

The one thing I wish they would change about FF gear is getting rid of the hard caps on Materia. Sure it could end up being busted but I bet fricking with stats that much would be fun
leveling and end game gear is extremely basic, with little room for refinement. The fallback is fashion, but that falters when barely add any, dont have many customization options per slot, and you start recycling gear.
The secondary stats are weak. They're also capped so you're limited on how you can build your character, not that it'd make much of a difference anyway. Might as well just strip it down to ilevel only and call it a day.
No set bonuses. No procs. The relic weapons don't do shit other than glow, no special properties at all. Everything is just boring as shit.
Personally glad FF doesn't have weapons and armors with procs. Ended up letting the devs be completely and utterly lazy with class design by making over powered random bullshit do most of your damage. Was one of the reasons I stopped playing WoW.

The game exploded ever since Blizzard accidentally all of itself, but I want to believe that the reason why the foundation was there was just the obscene amount of good will and good points the game scored from being a good fricking final fantasy game, storywise. It's a game of two fricking halves, the MMO player half who doesn't want to be fricked in the soul by money-milking homosexualry nickling and diming them to fricking death over wanting to play the game, but also the half that I kind of want to believe is the reason it first grew in the first place, being a good final fantasy game, which is a franchise ruined by "visionary" homosexuals who have spent the last fifteen or so years stuffing the XIII line down everybody's throat, fumbling XII, giving the world the fricking disgrace that was XV, and taking a remake of a game people have been wanting for a billion years and making VII out of it.

the reality is that Yoshida likes everquest but understood after reading all the feedback from the players during the 1.20 - 3.0 era that the loud and paying majority of player base wanted the game to become a easier version of WoW. this is why the nearly everything in the game feels like it's to tend to the most laziest of players.
I even remember someone complaining that the traveling by porter took too long and wanted more teleport options to yes even more visuals to indicate what to you needed to do.
this is what the players that hated 1.0 wanted and created for themselves. all the team did was give them what they wanted. if you wanted a actual online final fantasy rpg then people should have asked for more features from 1.0 to stay like the flying mounts not being a thing and if you wanted to travel somewhere you had to either cough up some valuable anima or go by foot, boat, or airship which was going to dock outside of cities but were going to be reserved for rank 32+ players through some long task with the grand company that you were going to help build up alongside your fellow players and each port outside the cities were planned to be rewards for grand companies that won the right to use them through a 4 way grand company pvp battle and yes. ishgard was going to have it's own grand company when it was going to be added in 1.0 until not.
so believe me when I say that the players today are the reason why FF14 feels like it takes 0 risks. if I could I would help remake 1.0 into what it was going to be but it seems like SE just wants to focus on other things instead.

I don't think it was intentional but rather a byproduct they had to let in due to how the engine works. I remember yoship saying that the game suffered greatly since early days because devs cared more about how it looked rather than how it played. And to build 2.x they re-used many of its assets and I would even dare say it's pretty much a modernized port of the old engine, which was a fricking mess.
As much as I like the game, that shit is never going to get fixed unless they stopped working on an entire expansion and focused on a proper rework of the engine but that would be a risky move

Ashes of Creation is also looking like a potential success. But Soulframe and Riots MMO have serious money behind them. They are going to take a shot at FFXIVs monopoly on the genre.
