Beat it. (AMAA)

Beat Super Mario Bros Wonder pretty much 100%. All that's left to do is some inane collecting and flag pole hopping that is of no real consequence. If you want any insights into the game, now is the time, but I will keep things relatively spoiler-lite.

how hard are the final levels? anyone near the level of champion's road on 3d world?

Ironically, the final-final level is nowhere near as difficult as the ones leading up to it. Even some basic levels gave me more frustration. This game expects more from you than any other 2D Mario that came before it, this is both a good and bad thing. Just know that in advance before going in, this isn't baby's first Mario.

This is an excellent co-op game. You two are going to have a blast, but things may get hectic and you may be yelling a lot on some levels. Par for the course with these games, I suppose.

Are the bosses mechanically distinct? I know they aren’t thematically varied, but I hope they at least play more differently than the bosses in NSMBU. The koopalings were bad enough but boom boom and kamek repetition was insufferable

This is one area the devs improved upon, for sure. You do fight Bowser Jr multiple times (no Koopalings), but the wonder gimmick comes into play during those fights. Each hit resulting in a different phase that spices things up. They are still easy, but not braindead easy. You may be pleasantly surprised.

That’s nice to hear. I was a bit wary when I heard that it was all Jr, and bosses in the vein of NSMBDS would have been nice, but well designed and mechanically varied encounters are most important. And I’d rather they limit the number of boss fights to the amount of compelling ideas they have than cram in a ton for convention/padding sake. It hurt NSMB, and it killed all of my interest in Sonic Superstars

I see a lot of thematic elements from the 3D Mario games (especially Odyssey) carried over here, but one thing I feel could have been improved upon is the variety of bosses, which the 3D games definitely nail. Your only boss in the game aside from the final one is just Bowser Jr, this makes it worse than the prior games oddly enough. It's like the devs can only go one way or the other, have a single boss with more mechanical depth, or a dozen bosses that all look different but have the depth of a puddle. Very bizarre.

Started playing since the 14th when it first leaked, beat the final boss on the 16th, and just 100%* it earlier today.

My gf is so-so at games. Would she enjoy co-oping this?

She may get very heated, as stated earlier this is the hardest 2D Mario by far. That isn't to say newbies can't have a good time or get into it, especially with a friend, but they may find themselves frustrated later on. I'm a seasoned gamer and even I found myself sweating at times. Some levels don't mess around with the level of skill involved.

Not OP, but Nabbit/Yoshi would probably allow her to have a good time. Badges too, but those might affect your enjoyment, since both players use the same one

Good point, I didn't even consider that. Yoshi and Nabbit don't take damage, and the badges may give her the edge, but that may not be enough to stem the difficulty if she's not used to harder titles. Enemies are not the primary concern with this game.

It was an enjoyable time, I don't regret it one bit. The term masochist is better fit for the poor souls who 100%-ed Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom.

What are some 2D platformers that you think it is about on par with? GotY contender for you?

Well for me, it's the proper sequel to Super Mario World I always wanted. It fixes basically every issue I and everyone else had with the "New" series. The graphics are vibrant, the world design is fresh and more unique, with enemies that are more new than old (Even Goombas are surprisingly rare!), and the game is tailored more for experienced players than casual ones. My previous 2D platformer favorite was Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, and this game comes close to that, very close. I am tempted to rate both at the same level. As it stands, this is my GOTY contender because it's fun to play and gets to the point unlike every other AAA release this year. It's a memorable experience I will look back on fondly. I can only imagine how much fun other people will have playing with friends and family.

Awesome, thanks for the responses, OP. How are you feeling about it in terms of replayability? Do you think the badges have an impact on that? Think the online races will be fun and that there are levels well suited to them?

          Anonymous

The badges do allow for some degree of customization, with your own preferred playstyle, but I wouldn't say they add to the replayability factor. There is one particular badge that makes you run really fast for instance, but this goes against the design of most levels so you'd be asking for death by using it. Some are situational at best, and most only help make things easier. Otherwise, the game itself offers just as many things to do and has just as much replayability as other 2D Marios. These games have always been pick-up-and-play, and Wonder is no different. In fact, the introduction of 3D-esque collectibles only adds more meat to the bone and encourages you to explore levels more than ever. Not counting the really fun Wonder gimmicks that are introduced here.

Ah, I forgot about the last part of your question. I think the online races will be plenty fun, provided it doesn't lag to hell, but some levels do require memorization to beat them, so an online player with experience will beat a newbie every time. The technical parts can and will trip you up more than once.

Where would you rank it when comparing it to other 2d Mario games? Would you say this is the best 2d Mario released yet?

      Anonymous

That's a tough question. It is the best 2D Mario in decades, but it's different enough that it may turn off players used to the more traditional Mario setting and formula. I would honestly rank it as the #1 best 2D Mario, just because it does so many things very well, is a very fun time, and is what we've been asking for for years., But I wouldn't be surprised if others feel differently.

My tier list right now is as follows (Best to Worst):
      >Super Mario Bros Wonder
      >Super Mario World
      >New Super Mario Bros U
      >Super Mario Land 2
      >New Super Mario Bros Wii
      >New Super Mario Bros DS
      >New super Mario Bros 2

It is highly underwhelming. I'd rank it at NSMB for the DS, a template which will be expanded on in future releases.
There are only 48 levels as opposed to the 78 in NSMBwii and 80 in NSMBU.

Overall, it's good. Par for the course for a Mario game, although it reminds me a lot of recent 3D titles like Odyssey. Wouldn't be shocked if both titles share the same composer(s). Don't be surprised to hear some nostalgic throwbacks too.

In what way? is the level design generally harder? Like Lost Levels BS or how?

      Anonymous

The level design is generally harder, there are many times where quick reflexes are required to make it through and it encourages you to explore levels a bit more than older titles. I never had a difficult time playing NSMB U, but I had moments where I was getting pretty heated playing this one.
