Shields are good for noobies learning attack patterns. Get one with 100% physical resistance.

Upgrade your weapons, it makes a big difference in damage.

Learn to DODGE and abuse iframes through swings.

I just beat Dark Souls for the first time myself, and here's my advice:

Treat your death as a resource, and accept that you WILL die. There are 'crutches' like the drake sword, or Black Knight Halberd - but those shortcuts will never make you truly 'good'. Just keep focusing on getting better with what you have.

I promise you, you can beat this game, if you try hard enough. Once you've beaten it, you will feel the biggest rush of dophamine of all time.

Don't use shields, dodge instead, it's more fun.

I can’t run past the dragon without being burned alive and when I go the other way the boar wrecks my shit. And eventually if I run past everything I run into a black knight (I think) blocking my path

        Try stabbing in the back

I understand. The dragon is meant to redirect you to the underpassage that eventually leads to the boar. When you get to the boar area, there's stairs going DOWN that leads to generally the next area, you'll know if you get attacked by a bunch of weak hollow guys. You can get past the boar to the stairs without killing him. You don't have to kill any black knights on the way to the next bonfire, they're usually in optional side paths. You will encounter some fencer knights though, so get ready to block or dodge a harder enemy.

You'll know if you made it to the right bonfire if it's in the blacksmith area.

Okay cool, will give this a try later.

I am using a generic long sword, should I have something else?

If it works for you, that's all that matters. I would experiment with multiple weapons to see what you like. Spears are a noob friendly weapon due to their range. The fencer knights drop pretty nice long swords too, but it's annoying to RNG farm them. Whatever weapon you choose though, make sure you upgrade it. Save and gather all the titinite ore you can.

There's a Claymore on the bridge with the dragon. A bit slow but it's great for damage and its moveset. Big sweeping attacks for crowds of enemies, long stabs to keep distance from single enemies, deals out tons of poise that can stun most things you're fighting.

The long sword is good, but if you get the balder side sword from the knights in the Parish then you should 100% use it.

The boar takes damage from those fires

        >boar
The boar is armored. Except for its butthole. Fist it.
Also see those fires around the area? there are alluring skulls nearby. You can throw them to lure the boar into the fire. Enemies are braindead.

Okay cool, will give this a try later.

I am using a generic long sword, should I have something else?

        >I am using a generic long sword
Most weapons are fine, just pick whatever you like. Whatever looks the coolest or has the most satisfying moveset. You'll improve your damage from upgrading whatever weapon you choose, and leveling up the relevant stat.

Use magic if you want to make the game easy mode, or get lucky and get an early black knight weapon (which are overpowered in the early/mid game, and quite good late game too).

Just book it at the bridge before the dragon appears and run to the alcove on the right in the middle of the bridge, you'll make it before the dragon flames burn you. From there you can unlock a shortcut. If you want, you can also cheese the dragon by buying a bow and a ton of arrows, and shooting it from a safespot on that alcove on the bridge.

Finding what works for you is going to be superior to what isn't as blase as that sounds. Get comfortable with your weapon loadout, get used to how many swings you can do before you gas on stamina, don't be afraid to backpedal to safety (even if you die your souls will be closer and not in a giant scrum of baddies for retrieval). If you are in a newer area you aren't comfortable with have no shame quaffing your estus like a drunkard that is going to be superior to freaking out and running deeper into the unknown and losing your souls there.
Treat every trip from a bonfire as a micro adventure until you are comfortable in that area. Plan to be able to return to the bonfire instead of treating it as a yolo death for no gain.

    Never level resistance
    Get a shield
If you really suck get heavy armor and don't even bother rolling

Always remember that dark souls 1 is not actually hard, it just tricks you into thinking that it is. Have fun and discover things yourself.

    Can black knights be backstabbed?

Playing on PS4 and no idea what I’m doing wrong

Yeah, DS1’s backstabbing feels a bit weird compared to the other games but it’s actually really easy and wide when you get used to it. You can also parry them, even the ones with the giant swords.

Just parry them, you will die a couple of times before you learn the timing.

I honestly don’t know the first thing about parrying

          Anonymous

In this game you can parry with
          >small shields
          >medium shields
          >hands/fists
          >curved swords
          >daggers
          >katanas
          >thrusting swords
Small Shields have the best frames but parrying frames start the instant you press the button in this game, instead of shortly after like in the sequels. Holding block and then parrying at the right time is the easiest way to pull it off.

Also you can’t parry any bosses so don’t try
            >b-b-but that one boss!
            He doesn’t need to know.

It's easy mode to be honest.
But not every enemy can be parried.
Just search for dark souls parry in israelitetube or israelitegle.

Black knights are meant to be challenges. They kill you in a couple hits, have a ton of health, etc. That's why they put them usually in side areas. Backstabbing is the easiest cheesiest way to kill them as a new character. Basically you just lock on and rotate around them constantly. Dodge as needed. Or come back when you're stronger.
