Mike literally admits that James did most of the work. Mike was more of the inspiration for the character and got James to continue with the series to begin with, but he never takes credit for it because most of it was still James filming, editing and writing.

Nah I recently went back and watched his shit up to the point where I felt like jumping off and he was really fricking funny for the first 100 or-so episodes. His Earthbound video was the last one I really enjoyed.

It's because that's the last video where he wrote the script himself. He hasn't been writing the scripts for years now.
I think he has like 200 episodes. The first 100 (mid 2000s-2012 or so) are mostly funny, but the latter half are fake and gay and feel written by a shittily tame AI that isn’t even allowed to be angry or swear. Also most of the earlier games he reviewed were ancient NES/Genesis/SNES titles which were low hanging fruit, easy to pick apart and make fun of for laugh since just the act of describing the game would send anyone into a fit of rage. 32x was the first AVGN I saw. It was randomly recommended to me by the Youtube algorithm back in 2013. Ended up watching them all while chugging Rolling Rock after seeing him shoot the 32x with an arrow.

It almost seems as if James avoided more reviews in that style because it was 'Doug's thing'. It's a shame because the TMNT 3 was hilarious and I feel would have really helped diversify his channel more. Especially since James' actual movie reviews are so surface level and borderline Wikipedia reading at times, making them into a comedic riff would make them better. You would think he would have tried it again with the Nerd persona considering he actually likes movies while he doesn't care about video games.
That was definitely something that helped Spoony back when he made reviews, having no distinction between video games and movies. They were all material for the main series of videos.
Spoony was honest and upfront with his inspirations from the get-go. TSE was always meant be a mixture of AVGN and MTS3K so it makes sense he'd be so open to movies being part of the repertoire. It's odd that James never tried to do the same, I would love if he gave us some explanation for never letting the Nerd do Movies outside the one time. Considering the weird eccentricities he has, and how much he overthinks things like with Board James lore I bet he had some convoluted reason in his head.
I wouldn't be surprised if Mike helped with the TMNT 3 script, since the writing in it is basically like regular AVGN episodes. Maybe James preferred just having his own voice for movie reviews so kept those to just him. Ironic if so given what happened in recent years

What really amazes me is not only has Doug maintained that level of output, but I think he's been still the main writer of his reviews all that time which is impressive. This year I can definitely tell someone else (I think Walter) is writing his reviews because the jokes and writing feel very different in 2024 NC episodes.
I stopped watching him some years ago because he started leaning way too hard on the random skits. And neither of his female cast members were ever funny.

He stopped doing the full skit reviews so long ago that I can't even recall the last time he did one. A lot of episodes don't even have the other castmembers appear at all these days. When they do, it's usually just a short opening segue. He's gone back to old-school style Nostalgia Critic reviews for a while now.

Bugs Bunny Birthday Blowout was the first episode I watched of avgn as a 11-12 yr old who was a total vidya addict. Needless to say, thought it was comedy gold. Now a days its fun to watch some of the classic avgns but dont bother touching the new ones

The year he recorded like 20 announcements of "IT'S CINEMASSACRE'S MONSTER MADNESS" getting increasingly hammy and drawn out til he was incomprehensibly yelling by the end of the month always jumps to mind, I'm not even sure which one that was.
I remember his Godzilla marathon for October. The videos were very short, but it still was fascinating to see tons of Godzilla stuff since I just know surface level monster names.
They were short because he went back and edited them down a ton to maintain youtube money. Somebody had uploaded the unedited videos somewhere, but they're probably lost by now.

Super Pitfall, Daydreaming Davy, Hydlide, and Milon's Shitty butthole, the Bible Games trilogy. Those are oddly relaxing to just watch and pretty funny.

Action 52 and Cheetahmen are the best. I like the CD-i ones with the Zelda games and the shitty Mario games. Metal Gear and Die Hard are underappreciated. Superman 64 has my favorite lines. Bible Games are peak comfy.

Based on a recent re-run through the first 100 using anon's screwattack video archive, it falls off pretty quickly after the original series finale of ROB the Robot. I think I got to Beetlejuice before I stopped and just went to rewatch the entire Board James series again.
There were stinkers in the golden era, but the hit or miss era after tthat had hits that weren't as good, and misses that were worse than habanero diarrhea coming out of your dick. You know what I mean. Aladdin dick enhancer. Life of Gilbert Gottfried. Lloyd Kaufman. The covid-era episodes that were genuinely just him sitting in one spot in the same pose saying things.

I think the main reason AVGN sucks now is his rage is fake. I remember learning about DOUGE and Irate Gamer back in 2007 and little me was so excited to check them out. However I found that their acting was way shittier than AVGN's (not to mention the direction). James just seemed so REAL, when he screamed sometimes his voice would peak because he was really fricking screaming, whereas doug would do an "angry voice" or something.
Like seriously, go watch the Dick Tracy episode and tell me that his rage is fake, its so real. I never got into TGWTG because of this (thank god that homosexual and his whole website was cancer). It might seem like such a small thing most people wouldn't care about but the authenticity elevated AVGN's videos above others, and in that primitive era that was really special. I'd even go so far as to argue its a lot more authentic than videos made today because a lot of videos today are meant to appease the algorithm Machine God or have very clean production value because the channel owner has 5 editors he hires. I think that's why I appreciate the Barbie episode so much, I loved seeing his entire process for an episode.

Why are all the episodes so fricking long now? Almost every new episode is 25+ minutes, while in the old days, that kind of length was reserved for really special episodes like Action 52. Hell, I think that's the only episode of the first 100 to exceed 25 minutes. They would be more tolerable if they went back to 10-15 minutes. Shouldn't episodes be shorter anyway since he supposedly has no time?

Know mainly that there was NO other internet comedy reviewers like this at the time, he predated near all of them. I think he has like 200 episodes. The first 100 (mid 2000s-2012 or so) are mostly funny, but the latter half are fake and gay and feel written by a shittily tame AI that isn’t even allowed to be angry or swear. Also most of the earlier games he reviewed were ancient NES/Genesis/SNES titles which were low hanging fruit, easy to pick apart and make fun of for laugh since just the act of describing the game would send anyone into a fit of rage. But now he’ll just review some mediocre licensed game from 2004 and pretend it’s the worst thing ever
That being said I think the “angry reviewer” cliche can still work, it just has to be directed at content so shitty it actually deserves it. It almost seems as if James avoided more reviews in that style because it was 'Doug's thing'. It's a shame because the TMNT 3 was hilarious and I feel would have really helped diversify his channel more. Especially since James' actual movie reviews are so surface level and borderline Wikipedia reading at times, making them into a comedic riff would make them better. You would think he would have tried it again with the Nerd persona considering he actually likes movies while he doesn't care about video games.
That was definitely something that helped Spoony back when he made reviews, having no distinction between video games and movies. They were all material for the main series of videos.
Spoony was honest and upfront with his inspirations from the get-go. TSE was always meant be a mixture of AVGN and MTS3K so it makes sense he'd be so open to movies being part of the repertoire. It's odd that James never tried to do the same, I would love if he gave us some explanation for never letting the Nerd do Movies outside the one time. Considering the weird eccentricities he has, and how much he overthinks things like with Board James lore I bet he had some convoluted reason in his head.
I wouldn't be surprised if Mike helped with the TMNT 3 script, since the writing in it is basically like regular AVGN episodes. Maybe James preferred just having his own voice for movie reviews so kept those to just him. Ironic if so given what happened in recent years

What really amazes me is not only has Doug maintained that level of output, but I think he's been still the main writer of his reviews all that time which is impressive. This year I can definitely tell someone else (I think Walter) is writing his reviews because the jokes and writing feel very different in 2024 NC episodes.

I remember his Godzilla marathon for October. The videos were very short, but it still was fascinating to see tons of Godzilla stuff since I just know surface level monster names.

When's the end of watchable episodes for you, Ganker? I think for me it's probably around 2014 and even then it's pretty spotty.
The last true kino episodes are around 2011-2012 for me. Mid 2010s are still watchable and have some decent episodes, like the sports one with the football rant. Anything past 2017 is cringy trash.
Based on a recent re-run through the first 100 using anon's screwattack video archive, it falls off pretty quickly after the original series finale of ROB the Robot. I think I got to Beetlejuice before I stopped and just went to rewatch the entire Board James series again.
There were stinkers in the golden era, but the hit or miss era after tthat had hits that weren't as good, and misses that were worse than habanero diarrhea coming out of your dick. You know what I mean. Aladdin dick enhancer. Life of Gilbert Gottfried. Lloyd Kaufman. The covid-era episodes that were genuinely just him sitting in one spot in the same pose saying things.

I think the main reason AVGN sucks now is his rage is fake. I remember learning about DOUGE and Irate Gamer back in 2007 and little me was so excited to check them out. However I found that their acting was way shittier than AVGN's (not to mention the direction). James just seemed so REAL, when he screamed sometimes his voice would peak because he was really fricking screaming, whereas doug would do an "angry voice" or something.
Like seriously, go watch the Dick Tracy episode and tell me that his rage is fake, its so real. I never got into TGWTG because of this (thank god that homosexual and his whole website was cancer). It might seem like such a small thing most people wouldn't care about but the authenticity elevated AVGN's videos above others, and in that primitive era that was really special. I'd even go so far as to argue its a lot more authentic than videos made today because a lot of videos today are meant to appease the algorithm Machine God or have very clean production value because the channel owner has 5 editors he hires. I think that's why I appreciate the Barbie episode so much, I loved seeing his entire process for an episode.
I unsubbed from him a few years ago, it actually made me pretty sad because I loved James and his videos but hes a borderline lolcow these days and the videos are horrible.

Why are all the episodes so fricking long now? Almost every new episode is 25+ minutes, while in the old days, that kind of length was reserved for really special episodes like Action 52. Hell, I think that's the only episode of the first 100 to exceed 25 minutes. They would be more tolerable if they went back to 10-15 minutes. Shouldn't episodes be shorter anyway since he supposedly has no time?
